The House of Representatives has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ministry of Humanitarian and Social Development to urgently provide relief materials to victims of a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Niger State.

The incident, which reportedly claimed multiple lives, was described as a result of overspeeding by the driver and the dangerous curve of the junction.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Adamu Tanko, who expressed deep concern over the grief and devastation caused by the explosion.

In addition to providing relief, the House called for the constitution of an ad hoc committee to investigate the underlying causes of such accidents and recommend preventive measures.

It further urged the Nigeria Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify sensitization efforts for tanker drivers to prevent future occurrences.

Similarly, the House deliberated on the growing threat of gas explosions across the country, adopting a motion brought under matters of urgent national importance by Hon. Aderemi Oseni.

Oseni highlighted the dangers posed by substandard and expired gas cylinders, which he noted were a major cause of the frequent explosions.

Following the debate, the House urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigerian Customs Service to ensure that only standard gas cylinders, trucks, and kits are allowed into the country.

The lawmakers also called on the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch an awareness campaign to educate Nigerians on how to identify substandard gas cylinders and kits.

A part-time student of the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa (FPN), Ibrahim Matthew, has been brutally murdered in his lodge following a violent altercation with a friend.

This was confirmed in a statement on Friday by the Nasarawa State Police Command, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.

According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, at a residence behind ECWA Peace College, Shagari Road, Nasarawa.

“ A report was lodged at the Nasarawa Division at about 2:00 a.m. by Mercy Bassey, a female resident of the lodge.

“The report indicated that a fight had broken out between one of her tenants and his friend, leading to a violent confrontation,” the statement reads in part.

The statement further revealed that swift police action led to the arrest of the suspect, identified as John Gambo, an ND2 student from the Banking and Finance Department of the same institution.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime.

“He admitted to attacking the deceased with both an axe and a knife. Both weapons have been recovered as evidence.”

The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

According to the statement, the police emphasized that the decision was necessary to curb security threats and ensure the safety of residents.

“The Command has resolved to curb the menace of these threats and has placed restrictions on movements between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. starting from February 7, 2025,” the statement read.

The police urged residents to cooperate with security operatives, assuring them that the measure was taken in their best interest.

“The Command prioritizes the safety and security of citizens and urges members of the public to cooperate with the police in making the state a safe place to thrive,” DSP Abdullahi stated.

Additionally, parents and guardians were advised to caution their children and wards against violating the directive, as the police would not tolerate any breaches.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has revealed that Imo and Ebonyi States ranked highest in female genital mutilation, FGM, prevalence across the South-East region.

According to UNICEF, 38% of women aged 15-49 in the state had undergone FGM, while 9.7% of girls aged 0-14 had also been subjected to the practice.

UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Enugu, Mrs. Juliet Chiluwe, made this disclosure on Wednesday during a zonal media dialogue to mark the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.

The event, themed “Stepping Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” highlighted the alarming prevalence rates in other South-East states.

Ebonyi recorded a 20.4% prevalence rate among women aged 15-49, followed by Abia (20.3%), Enugu (19%), and Anambra (13.1%).

Among girls aged 0-14, the prevalence rates stood at 3.7% in Enugu, 3.0% in Abia, 2.1% in Anambra, and 0.2% in Ebonyi.

Chiluwe noted that while the decline in prevalence rates among women aged 15-49 is encouraging compared to previous Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) and Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS), urgent action was still needed.

She emphasized the importance of strengthening alliances among grassroots activists, communities, governments, organizations, and the private sector to eliminate the harmful practice.

“FGM is a violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to health, life, and freedom from torture.

“It leads to severe physical, psychological, and social consequences, affecting victims throughout their lives— from childhood to old age,” Chiluwe stated.

Describing FGM as a form of gender-based violence, she condemned it as a harmful cultural practice designed to suppress female sexuality and reinforce control over women’s bodies.

“We have strong policies and legal frameworks, including the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, to protect women and girls in the South-East,” Chiluwe added.

She further highlighted significant progress, such as public declarations renouncing FGM, improved support services for survivors, and increased awareness across communities.

Despite these achievements, UNICEF and its partners continue to call for intensified efforts to eliminate FGM and safeguard the rights of women and girls across Nigeria.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, has pledged to support the Jigawa State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (JG-PCACC) in training and capacity building to enhance its effectiveness.

This was contained in a statement signed by the JG-PCACC spokesman issued to DAILY POST.

He said Olukoyede made this commitment in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the JG-PCACC, led by its Chairman, Barrister Salisu Abdu.

Expressing his satisfaction with the establishment of the state’s anti-graft agency, the EFCC chairman noted that its presence in Jigawa would ease the commission’s workload at the federal level.

“The more agencies we have tackling corruption, the less challenging the problem becomes.

“If, at the state level, you are able to monitor government spending and oversee MDAs, it will significantly reduce our burden at the federal level. I welcome this initiative and the establishment of your agency,” Olukoyede stated.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the EFCC chairman assured JG-PCACC of continuous support, saying, “We are always willing to collaborate because we share a common mandate.

“We will provide the necessary assistance and synergy to ensure the success of your commission.”

Olukoyede, however, advised Barrister Abdu to remain steadfast in his duties despite potential resistance.

“You may be the most criticized person in your state for taking on this responsibility, but stay focused.

“Keep your conscience clear before God and man, and remain committed to your mandate,” he urged.

He further stressed the importance of integrity, warning that ethical compromises could undermine the agency’s effectiveness.

“Once you start compromising on ethics, it is only a matter of time before you lose credibility. Your team must understand the weight of the responsibility before you,” he cautioned.

Speaking earlier, Abdu highlighted the purpose of the visit, stating that the JG-PCACC sought to identify areas for collaboration with the EFCC.

“Our commission has a dual mandate: to receive public complaints and to investigate and resolve issues affecting the public, including corruption.

“However, as a new agency, we lack the expertise to conduct thorough anti-corruption investigations. We need support to strengthen our capacity in this area,” he explained.

He noted that JG-PCACC might eventually handle corruption-related prosecutions, which often intersect with economic crimes.

“We believe that our lawyers and prosecutors can benefit from training through your academy or investigation department to enhance their prosecution skills,” he added.

Abdu also emphasized the need for information sharing between both agencies.

“The establishment of the JG-PCACC does not override the EFCC’s mandate in Jigawa State.

“However, we can assist by providing crucial information that may aid EFCC investigations into economic crimes within the state,” he stated.

In addition, he sought EFCC’s support in administrative development and institutional structuring to help the newly established commission build a strong foundation.

Benue State government has vowed to take all necessary measures to apprehend and bring to justice those responsible for the brutal attack on the Okpomaju community in Otukpo Local Government Area of the State.

Benue State Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode disclosed this on Thursday during a visit to the scene of the attack, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the assailants.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when heavily armed herdsmen stormed Okpomaju, opening fire indiscriminately.

Five people were confirmed dead, eight others are reported missing, and many more were injured during the ensuing chaos.

Dr. Ode, on behalf of the Executive Governor, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, extended condolences to the victims’ families and the community, assuring them that a military patrol team would remain in the area, while plans were underway to establish a military operational base to enhance security.

He described the attack as unacceptable and vowed, “I promise that none of those who committed this heinous act will go free.

“The state government will take all necessary actions to ensure that those who disrupt the peace of this community will be apprehended.

“I have come here with the State Emergency Management Team to assess the number of displaced persons so that we can provide relief materials to meet their immediate needs.”

During the visit, Lt. Col. Salisu Inusa, Sector Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, OPWS, Forward Base, Otukpo, confirmed that the Okpomaju community was attacked by suspected gunmen on Wednesday evening.

He reported that upon receiving news of the assault, troops from OPWS, in collaboration with other security forces, swiftly moved to contain the situation and prevent further loss of life and property.

Col. Inusa also mentioned that a gun truck had been stationed in the community to reassure residents of their safety.

Community youth leader, Mr. Onyilokwu Agaba recounted the traumatic experience, noting that the attackers murdered five community members, including his immediate younger brother, in a coordinated assault that lasted approximately 30 minutes.
