Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party on Saturday regained power in the nation’s capital for the first time in 27 years.
The victory is said to be a boost for the Hindu-nationalist leader after a disappointing national election last year.
Data from the Election Commission of India showed that Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party won 48 of the 70 seats in the Delhi capital district, well ahead of the 22 for the opposition Aam Aadmi Party, AAP, of Arvind Kejriwal, a fierce critic of Modi.
“It is our guarantee that we will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi, improving the overall quality of life for the people,” Modi wrote on social media platform X.
DAILY POST reports that AAP, which grew out of an anti-corruption movement in 2012, tasted its first electoral success in Delhi and has ruled the territory, which includes India’s parliament and federal government offices in New Delhi, for two terms from 2015.
Meanwhile, 55-year-old Kejriwal, an anti-corruption crusader-turned-politician who was arrested on graft charges weeks before last year’s general election began, alleged a political vendetta by the Modi government.
Kejriwal, who was released on bail and resigned as Delhi chief minister to focus on campaigning for the state election, lost the seat he was contesting.

The attackers were said to have struck near the village of Kobe, around 30 km from Gao in a region where affiliates of Islamic State and Al Qaeda have been active for over a decade, destabilising Mali and its neighbours Burkina Faso and Niger.
A local official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said people jumped out of vehicles to flee, adding that there were many dead and wounded civilians.
According to the offial, up to 56 bodies were recorded at the hospital in Gao, stressing that there was also an unknown number of military casualties.
Meanwhile, the Malian army has not yet commented on the development.
A Gao resident also said around 50 were killed and vehicles torched, adding that deadly attacks have become so frequent that the military organises near-daily escorts.
DAILY POST reports that the insurgencies took root in Mali’s arid north following a Tuareg separatist rebellion in 2012.
The Islamist militants have since spread to other countries in the impoverished central Sahel region south of the Sahara.
According to the International Organization for Migration, IOM, the attacks have killed thousands of people and contributed to a humanitarian crisis with over 3.2 million people displaced as of January.

The Edo State Police Command has rescued the abducted traditional ruler of Udo-Eguare kingdom, His Royal Highness Friday Ehizojie, after four days in captivity.
DAILY POST reports that the traditional ruler was abducted along with five others by kidnappers on February 3, 2025, while riding as a passenger on a motorcycle along a lonely path leading to the community.
The abductees were ambushed by unknown persons, and in the process the Okada rider was shot dead before the Onogie was abducted while one of the victims was freed.
Confirming the rescue of the traditional ruler, in a statement on Saturday, February 8, 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Moses Yamu said the monarch was rescued after four days in captivity.
Yamu attributed the successful rescue to the logistics support rendered by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.
He said the Command also appreciated vigilantes, hunters and other well-meaning residents of the state for their support
Parts of the statement read, “The Edo State Police Command is pleased to inform the general public that the sustained search and rescue operations have yielded positive results.
“The Commissioner of Police Edo State Command, Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin, has today 07/02/2024 at about 1800hrs kept her vow with the rescue of the Onogie of Udo-Eguare community who was earlier kidnapped on the 03/02/2025.
“The Command appreciates the Government of Edo State and attributed this success to the logistic support rendered by the Executive Governor of Edo State, HE Sen. Monday Okpebholo towards this operation.
“The Command equally appreciates the vigilantes, hunters and other well-meaning residents of the State for their support so far.
“The general public is assured that the Command’s commitment to the fight against crime remains unshaken.”
DAILY POST recalls that the Command had on February 3, 2025, announced the deployment of tactical teams and Police Mobile Force to rescue the kidnapped Onogie.

Speaking on Saturday during the coronation of the newly appointed paramount ruler of Gombi, the Kumu 1 of Gombi, Agrey Ali, the governor charged the chief and all traditional rulers in the state to play their part in enforcing the ban against tree cutting and illegal mining.
The Fintiri administration had last year placed a ban on tree cutting for charcoal making, reiterating the harm that the act causes forestation efforts, just as the administration has always frowned at illegal mining which often manifests in even deaths of illegal miners.
Specifically addressing the coronation of the Kumu 1 of Gombi, the governor urged the new paramount ruler to bring to bear on his people his managerial skills acquired in his years as a top civil servant.
The Kumu 1 of Gombi who graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with a degree in public administration, joined the Adamawa State civil service, rising through the ranks until he retired as a permanent secretary.
In his acceptance speech, the Gombi paramount chief said he would lead his people with due sense of responsibility.
“This is the coming of reality of a dream, the begining of new hope for the people of Gombi,” he said, promising, “As the Kumu 1, I pledge to be father to all.”
Mentioning some of the tribes which constitute or reside within the chiefdom and saluting them in their respective tongues, the Kumu 1 of Gombi said his leadership task would be made easy by the reality that although the people are diverse, they are united by a common zeal for development.

Lebanon on Saturday formed a new government amid unusually direct US intervention in the process and in a step intended to bring the country closer to accessing reconstruction funds following a devastating war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, while speaking to reporters at the presidential palace, said the 24-member cabinet would prioritise financial reforms, reconstruction and the implementation of a United Nations resolution seen as a cornerstone to stability on the Lebanese border with Israel.
This is coming after more than three weeks of talks with rival political parties in Lebanon, where government posts are parcelled out according to sects and days of deadlock over the Shi’ite Muslim ministers, usually named by Iran-backed Hezbollah and its Shi’ite ally Amal.
However, Washington has pushed back against Hezbollah’s sway in any new government.
US deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus said on Friday that the US considered Hezbollah’s involvement in the new cabinet a red line and thanked Israel for dealing devastating blows to the group, in a controversial statement that sparked protests in Lebanon.
