The Nigerian government has resumed collection of access gate fees at the Abuja International Airport.

The Federal Government made this known through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, on Saturday.

Announcing the development in public notice shared on its official X, FAAN said the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport’s access gate fees take effect on Saturday February 8, 2025.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, wishes to inform the general public that the authority has officially resumed collection of access gate fees at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 8:30am, 8th February, 2025″.

DAILY POST reports that the gate fee was suspended on January 24 2025, to cushion the traffic burden on airport road users.

Governor Dauda Lawal has assured the World Bank that his administration is making significant strides in combating banditry in Zamfara State. During an official visit to the World Bank office in Abuja on Friday, the governor discussed key development initiatives in education, health, climate resilience, and agriculture.

A statement issued by the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Government, Sulaiman Bala Idris, highlighted that the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the state and the World Bank, fostering greater support for ongoing and future development projects.

In his address, Governor Lawal reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the World Bank.

“I would like to express my appreciation to the World Bank for its continuous support of our state. Our development agenda aligns with the Bank’s mission to alleviate poverty and drive sustainable growth,” he stated.

Recognizing the security challenges that previously hindered project implementation, the governor emphasized that his administration has taken proactive steps to restore stability.

“We have made significant progress in addressing security concerns, and the situation is improving. Through enhanced patrols and strategic security measures, we have been able to mitigate threats, ensuring a safer environment for our people,” he said.

Governor Lawal reassured the World Bank team of their safety during visits to monitor and supervise projects, citing the implementation of secure accommodations, transportation, and communication protocols.

“Our administration has established mechanisms for continuous security assessments to promptly respond to any emerging threats. Banditry-related incidents on highways, in villages, and within urban areas are under control. Life is gradually returning to normal, as reflected in the increased implementation of development projects across the state,” he added.

The governor extended an invitation to the World Bank Country Director to visit Zamfara and witness firsthand the progress of World Bank-supported initiatives.

In response, Dr. Ndiamé Diop, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, praised Governor Lawal’s leadership and the state’s progress.

“I am impressed by the systems you have put in place. Congratulations on achieving such remarkable results in such a short time,” Dr. Diop remarked.

Additionally, the Task Team Leader of the NG-CARES project commended the success of Zamfara’s implementation model, noting that it is now being adopted by other states in Nigeria and even replicated internationally.

“We are not only applying the Zamfara model in other states but also extending it to other countries. I must commend the governor and the state government for their dedication and efforts,” she stated.

The meeting underscored the strengthening of Zamfara’s partnership with the World Bank and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustainable development and security improvement.

Members of the Katsina Elders’ Forum have distanced themselves from a statement made by the group’s secretary, Mohammed Aliyu, in which he suggested that the people of Katsina would not support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Justice Sadiq Abdullahi-Mahuta, a key member of the forum and the Galadima Katsina, firmly rejected Mr Aliyu’s remarks, stating that they did not represent the forum’s official stance.

“This is not an elder’s language. It is not our position,” Mr Abdullahi-Mahuta said.

“We completely dissociate the Katsina Elders’ Forum from this statement. Our forum is not for politics. We are a group of respected elders concerned about the development and progress of the state and Nigeria.”

The controversy arose following the arrest of Prof. Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mr Aliyu had linked Prof. Yusuf’s detention to political persecution, warning that it could affect Katsina’s support for President Tinubu in 2027.

However, Mr Abdullahi-Mahuta clarified that while the forum was not against calls for a fair trial or Prof. Yusuf’s release, it would not align itself with political threats or sentiments.

“The arrest and detention of Prof. Yusuf is not the solution,” he said.

“He should either be released or face a fair trial in court. That is our position, but we are not part of any statement suggesting that the people of Katsina will not vote for the president.”

The district head of Malumfashi further stressed that political choices remained a personal decision.

“Every individual has the right to support and vote for any candidate they believe will meet their needs,” he added.

Mr Abdullahi-Mahuta concluded that the purpose of the briefing was to set the record straight.

“Thanks to Almighty Allah, Prof. Yusuf has been released, but we must be clear, our forum does not engage in partisan politics.”
