The Kebbi State Government has approved the appointment of Bello Marafa Besse as the new District Head of Baraden Dutsin-Mari in Koko-Besse Local Government Area.

Governor Nasir Idris approved the appointment following the death of the former District Head, Alhaji Muhammad Mualliyadi.

Confirming the development in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Garba Dutsin-Mari, said the decision was taken to ensure continuity in leadership and to strengthen traditional institutions.

“The appointment was made to maintain leadership continuity and to reinforce our traditional institutions,” the commissioner stated.

He also extended his congratulations to the new district head and encouraged him to serve his people with commitment.

The commissioner also praised Governor Idris for what he described as his respect for tradition and commitment to grassroots development.

In his response, Bello Marafa Besse thanked the governor for the appointment and promised to serve with dedication.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has reiterated its call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara states to address the spate of insecurity in both states.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, reiterated the call on Thursday when he appeared as a guest on Arise Television.

Abdullahi stressed that declaring a state of emergency would not mean removing elected governors but applying extraordinary measures to restore peace.

“We have information that bandits have taken over large swathes of Zamfara, extracting taxes from citizens, abducting people, and slaughtering them.

“If you could declare a state of emergency in Rivers State where no lives were lost, what stops you from doing the same in Zamfara, where Nigerians are being killed daily?” he asked.

The ADC spokesman also reacted to comments by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, urging Nigerians to learn survival and self-defense skills, stressing that the government still bears the primary duty of protecting citizens.

“By saying people should learn to defend themselves, he was admitting that what we have in place is inadequate. I agree completely with that,” Abdullahi said.

The Federal Government has announced an upward review of the fees for the Nigerian passport.

The government announced that the development will become effective from September 1, 2024.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the spokesman for the Nigeria Immigration Service, A.S. Akinlabi.

Akinlabi stated that the increment aims to ensure the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport set to take effect on September 1, 2025.

“The review, which only affects passport application fees made in Nigeria, now sets new fee thresholds for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity at N100,000 and a 64-page passport with 10-year validity at N200,000.

“Meanwhile, Nigerian passport application fees made by Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity,” he said.

The service reiterates its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services are accessible to all Nigerians.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, Tersoo Kula, has accused Senator Titus Zam of Benue North-West of consistently deploying “reckless vitriol and falsehood” against the governor.

Kula, in a statement issued on Thursday, said he was compelled to respond to what he described as a “malicious and poorly conceived” article authored by one of the senator’s aides, which targeted him personally.

According to the CPS, the publication amounted to “baseless invectives” and was a deliberate attempt to malign his role as the governor’s spokesperson.

“The whole piece drips with desperation, bitterness, and malicious name-calling. Reducing a public discourse to mafia-style analogies of ‘hitmen’ and ‘dons’ only exposes the writer’s obsession with fiction, not facts. Benue people deserve substance, not kiddish analogies,” Kula said.

He accused Senator Zam of being intolerant of criticism despite having, on several occasions, “deployed gutter language” against Governor Alia in public forums and online spaces.

“The job of a Chief Press Secretary is to serve as the governor’s mouthpiece, and that is exactly what I have done responsibly and firmly. If Zam mistakes firmness for intimidation, he should reflect on the reckless invectives he throws daily at the governor,” the statement read.

Kula further alleged that the senator had made the governor his “full-time constituency project,” focusing more on personal attacks than on constructive criticism.

“No adult in Benue is oblivious of the fact that Senator Zam has, over time, made Governor Alia the object of constant attacks. Such obsession cannot be dignified as constructive criticism. Governance is about delivering development, which this administration is focused on,” he stated.

The CPS maintained that he would not apologize for defending the governor, adding that his “weapons are facts, clarity, and loyalty to the truth.”

Kula also called on Zam and his aides to “learn the perimeters of responsible discourse,” stressing that free speech must be exercised with responsibility.

He highlighted the Alia administration’s achievements, including infrastructure development, agricultural revival, payment of workers’ salaries, and restoring “dignity to governance,” insisting that such progress could not be erased by propaganda.

“Attacking the governor and maligning his aides will not improve a single community road nor provide one job for the youth,” Kula said.
