Another LG Boss Suspended in Niger

Barely three weeks after the Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Council Area in Niger State, Alhaji Aminu Yussuf Ladan, was suspended by the legislative arm of the local government, another council boss, the Chairman of the Bosso LGA, Hajiya Ladidi Bawa Bosso, has been suspended from office.

The suspension of Bosso took place yesterday morning, according to the statement made available to journalists in Minna.

The legislative arm leveled a heap of allegations against her among which are:financial misappropriation, harassment, intimidation, extortion, and abuse of office.

In ‘a Notice of Resolution for the Suspension of the Chairman of Bosso Local Government Area and Demand for Investigation’, the legislative arm of the local government said it took the action “in strict compliance with the law.”

Seven out of the 11 councillors of the council signed the suspension document, which also claimed that the suspended chairman “failed to convene the statutory council meetings and other acts of gross misconduct,” which they claimed were “inconsistent with her oath of office.

“In line with the Local Government Laws, the formal notice of the suspension has been duly transmitted to the governor of Niger State, for the constitution of a Committee of Investigation to inquire into the allegations and report its findings within the prescribed period,” the councillors said in the statement.

All efforts to reach the suspended chairman on her cell phones were abortive, as the calls were not connecting at the time of filing this report.

Three weeks ago, the chairman of Chanchaga LGA, Alhaji Aminu Yussuf Ladan, was suspended by the legislative arm of the council, which alleged wrongdoing similar to that of the suspended Bosso LGA, Hajia Ladidi Bawa Bosso.

However, Ladan approached the courts, which granted an injunction stopping his suspension, but the case was transferred to Suleja,, where the injunction does not suffice.

The state government had also set up a committee to investigate the allegations leveled against the suspended chairman. The committee headed by Justice Mikhail Abdullahi of the Minna High Court has started sitting in Minna and receiving petitions against the suspended chairman.

The Plateau State government has once again renewed its call for the establishment of a state policing structure to address peculiar security challenges in the state.

The fresh call, made by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, during a live programme on Dr Fish FM, Jos, re-echoed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s continued demand for state police as a viable option to the regular security agencies controlled by the federal government.

While speaking on the programme, Ramnap stated that, while the state government continues to collaborate with federal security agencies, creating a state police system will help bring security closer to the grassroots.

According to her, the security challenges and realities in the state require tailored responses, and the establishment of a state police system remains a viable measure to ensure peace and safety in the rural communities.

The Commissioner also assured that the government remains determined to strengthen security through the deployment of personnel, enhanced community vigilance, and sustained engagement with stakeholders.

She, however, urged residents to support ongoing government reforms while cooperating with security agencies to consolidate peace and stability in the state.

Roaming of cattle in the city and communities within Umuahia, the Abia State capital, dirty marketplaces and burning of refuse dumps have become major challenges that must be tackled.

The Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, Umuahia zone, Catechist Jonah Ambrose, stated this on Wednesday in Umuahia during a stakeholders’ meeting.

During the meeting, attended by the Mayor of Umuahia South LGA and Presidents-General from Umuahia North and Umuahia South LGAs, activities of herdsmen, indiscriminate waste disposal, and some youths’ refusal to participate in environmental sanitation topped the chart of discussion.

But in his opening speech, the Deputy General Manager of ASEPA, Catechist Jonah Ambrose, said the meeting was called to seek the support of Presidents-General of various communities in Umuahia North and Umuahia South, which his zone covers.

He regretted that despite the resources being spent by Governor Alex Otti’s administration in cleaning up the state capital and its environs, some persons still mess up their surroundings, adding that some markets are still found in stenchy conditions.

Ambrose, who solicited the support of the Presidents-General, expressed dismay about the continued activities of herdsmen whose cattle mess up government roads, including roads that were recently reconstructed by Governor Otti.

A communique declared by the participants said that all the communities would support ASEPA in keeping Umuahia clean, even as they called for the deployment of more waste disposal buckets in their areas.

It was also agreed that the cleanest community in the entire Umuahia would be recognized and honoured.
