The Adamawa State Civil Service Commission has dismissed allegations that it is offering unmerited favours to some candidates in its recruitment exercise.

The commission has scheduled a final placement interview for 8,196 candidates for vacancies in the state civil service.

Public confidence in the fairness of the recruitment exercise has been low since May, when 93,700 people applied for 4,000 vacancies after the closure of the application portal.

Although the number of applicants was later reduced to 52,003 and most recently to 8,196, scepticism has continued, leading to allegations that some candidates who failed to make the shortlist for the planned interview were being secretly permitted to attend.

In response, the Civil Service Commission said the exercise is flawless.

“We wish to assure the general public that the Commission is not altering, inserting, or reinstating unqualified names into the next phase of the ongoing recruitment exercise,” the Adamawa Civil Service Commission said in a statement issued by its permanent secretary, Abubakar Maiha.

Maiha categorically debunked the “misconception making the rounds that disqualified candidates are being fielded for the interview stage,” emphasising that the recruitment exercise remains fair to all applicants.

“Members of the public and all successful candidates are therefore advised to disregard such rumours and focus on preparing for the interview stage, which commences on Thursday, 28th August 2025 at the Civil Service Commission office, Yola,” Maiha stated.

The Kano State Government has warned nutrition coordinators not to steal, sell, or divert therapeutic food meant for malnourished children. 

The state said anyone caught doing this will be arrested and prosecuted.

Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, Kano’s Commissioner for Health, made the warning at a meeting that closed the MIYCN and MMS programme run by the FHI 360 Alive and Thrive Nigeria Project. 

The meeting reviewed the programme’s results and the state’s plans after the project activities ended.

Dr. Yusuf said the state will not accept actions that harm efforts to improve the health of mothers, children and adolescents.

He stressed that security agencies are watching distribution closely. 

“Let me inform you that security agencies are monitoring all activities closely. Any Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) that goes missing will have consequences. Make sure you do not collude with anyone to divert these supplements. They are meant solely for malnourished children,” he said.

The commissioner added that the RUTF stocks are worth N1bn. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf provided N500 million and UNICEF provided another N500 million to buy the supplements, which should last for several months.

Dr. Yusuf said the supplies and other partner support aim to cut malnutrition and reduce anaemia in pregnant women across the state.

Worried by the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy in Akwa Ibom, the Chairman, State House Committee on Health, Moses Essien, has called on the state government and civil society groups to launch widespread enlightenment campaigns to educate teenagers on reproductive health while also tackling the issue of school dropouts caused by early pregnancies.

He made the call on Wednesday at an event marking the 2025 breastfeeding week in the state.

Essien, who represents Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, warned that children should not be exposed to the responsibilities of motherhood when they are not mentally and emotionally prepared.

He said, “It is not ideal for children between the ages of 13 and 17 to be involved in family responsibilities instead of being in school. Children should not be allowed to engage in motherhood when they are not ready. There must be enough sensitization to help our daughters understand when it is appropriate to begin family life.”

He also condemned the sight of young girls hawking during school hours, many of whom, he said, had dropped out of school due to unplanned pregnancies. “We need to encourage attitudinal change among young people. These changes must begin early to discourage underage engagement in family life,” he added.

In a move to promote maternal and child health, the lawmaker disclosed that he has tabled a motion before the House, urging Governor Umo Eno to extend maternity leave for nursing mothers from three months to six months. He also advocated for the introduction of paternity leave for fathers to enable shared parenting and support the fight against child malnutrition.

“Exclusive breastfeeding for six months enhances child growth, strengthens mother-child bonding, and promotes overall health,” he said. “When mothers have the opportunity to nurse their babies properly, we can reduce the risks of malnutrition, stunted growth, and other childhood diseases.”

On the 2025 state budget, Essien noted that although the current administration had increased health sector funding from 4–5% to 7.5%, the figure still falls short of the 15% benchmark recommended by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“We hope that by 2026, the allocation will rise to 9% and eventually reach the expected standard. While the current funding may not be adequate, the government is making progress compared to previous administrations,” he stated.

The lawmaker emphasized the need for sustained investment in health and education to secure the future of Akwa Ibom’s youth and improve the overall well-being of families across the state.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop excuses and inaugurate the board of the Pension Commission.

NLC disclosed this in a statement by its president, Joe Ajaero, on Wednesday.

This comes amid reports that Pencom and Tinubu’s government are yet to inaugurate the board of Pencom.

Reacting, Ajaero, in a statement, said the non-constitution of the Pencom board showed a lack of transparency on the part of the federal government under President Tinubu.

NLC insisted that the federal government has erred in the management of workers’ pension funds.

“Perhaps what Pencom failed to tell us are the specific steps taken by the Federal Government to address the issue of non-constitution and inauguration of the Pencom governing board for more than five years.

“This aloofness goes to the heart of the lack of transparency in the management of pension funds. At the root of the crisis of transparency in the management of pension funds in Nigeria is a dysfunctional governance architecture stemming from the non-constitution of the pension governing board. If the management of Pencom wants the public to ignore this grave misnomer, the leadership of the NLC will not, regardless of overflowing patronage.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress is fully aware of its strident role in birthing and shaping the current pension system in Nigeria. We do not need a tutorial on this. All we need is a commitment from the Federal Government that the labours of Nigerian workers through trade unions to develop a virile contributory pension scheme are not derailed by the demons of poor accountability and oversight that destroyed the old defined benefit scheme. What is so difficult in constituting the board of PenCom?

“Having conceded without humility that the government has gravely erred by administering workers’ funds without working-class oversight through representation in the PenCom governing board, the management of PenCom should go above polemics of excuses and invest its energy in persuading the Federal Government to do the needful—constitute the governing board of the Pension Commission without further delay?

“The Nigeria Labour Congress will never shirk from its duty of holding the government to account on the management of public trust, particularly workers’ funds. It is simply too dangerous and gravely costly to be silent when a democratic government obstructs representative governance. “A stitch in time saves nine,” NLC stated.

This comes amid unofficial reports that President Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (Pencom).

The NLC had threatened to embark on a strike over the non-constitution of the PenCom board and issues related to the diversion of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF.
