The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has rejected allegations that it disobeyed a court order issued by the Federal High Court in Oshogbo, Osun State.

Reports emerged that on September 29, 2025, the court ordered the arrest of the former INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, for allegedly failing to comply with a judgment in a case involving the Action Alliance, AA.

A statement released by Sam Olumekun, a National Commissioner and the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, described the reports as misleading.

INEC clarified that it had complied with the court’s directive before the deadline expired.

On Monday, October 6, 2025, within the stipulated deadline, INEC filed documentation at the Federal High Court in Oshogbo to demonstrate its compliance with the judgment, which mandated recognition of the Action Alliance’s executives elected on October 7, 2023, in Abeokuta, Ogun State as the Commission provided evidence of this compliance through the dashboard of its website.

However, when the judgment creditors expressed concerns that INEC had listed only four national executives and excluded the party’s National Chairman, Rufai Omoaje, the Commission responded by presenting the Notice of Appeal filed by Omoaje with the Supreme Court.

This appeal challenges the Court of Appeal’s decision that removed him from his position as chairman.

INEC emphasized that the judgment of the Court of Appeal takes precedence over that of the Federal High Court.

Therefore, the Commission cannot list Omoaje’s name as the National Chairman of the Action Alliance while the Court of Appeal’s judgment is still in effect.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said the president has made progress in dismantling terror networks responsible for insecurity in Nigeria.

Bwala assured Nigeria’s foreign partners that there is no genocide against Christians in the country.

He described the genocide claim by United States lawmakers and media as a false narrative.

In an interview with France24 TV in Paris, Bwala said: “During a productive engagement at France24 TV in Paris, I made it clear that Nigeria rejects the false narrative being pushed by certain Western media outlets and a few U.S. lawmakers about a so-called “Christian genocide.”

“This is a gross misrepresentation of Nigeria’s reality. The challenges of insecurity we’ve faced are driven by criminality, not religion, and the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made significant progress in dismantling the terror networks responsible.

“Rather than amplifying division, we invite our international partners to stand with Nigeria in sustaining the gains made against insurgency and banditry, which have declined sharply over the last two and a half years.

“Our focus remains on peace, unity, and national development, and no propaganda can distract us from that mission.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, arraigned Ngozi Olejeme, a former board chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja.

Olejeme was docked on eight counts bordering on money laundering, conversion, transfer, and possession of proceeds of unlawful activities totaling ₦1 billion.

One of the charges alleges that, while serving as NSITF board chairman in February 2012, she indirectly converted ₦321.6 million paid into the account of Adin Miles International Ltd, knowing it was part of proceeds from unlawful activity—an offence contrary to Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended).

Another count accuses her of procuring one Chuka C. Eze to convert $2 million into naira for payment to the same company, also alleged to be proceeds of crime.

Olejeme pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Following her plea, prosecution counsel Emenike Mgbemele requested a trial date to enable the EFCC call its 14 witnesses.

Her counsel, Emeka Ogboguo (SAN), urged the court to grant her bail pending trial.

Justice Nwite released the defendant to her counsel and adjourned the case to November 17, 2025, for hearing on the bail application.

An Air Peace flight from Abuja to Asaba narrowly avoided a potential disaster on Friday after one of its engines reportedly failed while preparing for take-off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The incident occurred moments after the aircraft had accelerated on the runway when a loud bang was heard, accompanied by flashes of light. Fortunately, there was no fire outbreak.

The pilot immediately aborted the take-off and safely taxied the aircraft back to the terminal, where all passengers were calmly disembarked.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and relief, with some passengers breaking into prayers and songs of thanksgiving after the plane came to a stop.

One passenger told Zagazola Makama that the pilot acted swiftly and professionally.

“We had gained full speed on the runway when we suddenly heard a loud bang. The plane shook slightly, and there was a flash. The pilot then calmly announced there had been an engine failure and that we were returning to the terminal,” the passenger said.

As of the time of filing this report, Air Peace had yet to issue an official statement, though sources at the airport confirmed that engineers were inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the malfunction.

No injuries or damage were reported, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is expected to launch an investigation in line with aviation safety standards.

The Imo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to approve the establishment of Imo State College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Umudi, Nkwerre LGA, as an independent State-owned professional institution.

The House also asked the state government to integrate a Department of Autism and Special Needs Studies into the new College to ensure specialized training and research in the neglected critical area.

The House reached the resolutions while deliberating on a motion moved by the member representing Nkwerre Constituency, Nze Chisom Ojukwu and supported by 14 other Lawmakers as co-sponsors.

Presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Ojukwu said the existing schools of nursing and midwifery in the state are not sufficient to absorb the rising number of qualified applicants seeking admission every year.

He disclosed that the former NYSC Orientation Camp at Umudi in Nkwerre Local Government Area is presently underutilized, despite having vast land, durable structures, and a strategic location suitable for conversion into an academic institution.

The Lawmaker was optimistic that establishing a new, independent Imo State College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery at Umudi will expand access to professional training, improve healthcare, manpower development, and maximize the use of existing State assets, adding that the inclusion of a dedicated Department of Autism and Special Needs Studies will position the State as a pioneer in addressing underserved area of healthcare education, attract partnerships, and provide specialized training and services to vulnerable populations.

The House after much deliberations on the motion, urged government to direct the Commissioners of Education and Health to undertake an immediate feasibility and needs assessment of the Umudi site and submit a comprehensive report to the State Executive Council and to provide adequate funding for rehabilitation and upgrading of the existing structures at Umudi to meet modern academic, clinical, and research standards.

It also called on the government to mandate collaboration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant special-needs accreditation bodies to secure full approval, accreditation, and long-term sustainability of the college.

Youths in Imo State under the aegis of Orluzurumee Youth Assembly, OYA, has accused vigilante groups in Orlu zone of indulging in extra judicial killing, maiming and unlawful arrest and detention of innocent youths.

The group made the accusation through its president, Prince Izunna Obiefule while attending a security summit organized by Amnesty International in Enugu State.

At the summit organized to ascertain level of attack and unlawful killings in the southeast region, the Youth leader revealed that, Orsu, Orlu, Oru West and other LGAs within the zone are the most affected by the extra judicial killings.

He said while the atrocities were being meted out on the hapless innocent villagers, government and regular security agencies do not do much to monitor the activities of those vigilante groups, especially those established by the government.

Obiefule urged the authorities to rise and caution the vigilante to stop being reckless and hostile to the villages, adding that such unregulated community policing is very inimical to the already porous insecurity situation in the state.

He urged the government to adequately equip security agencies to enable them combat crime and insecurity to a standstill and restore security, peace and comfort in the state, particularly in Orlu Senatorial Zone.

The Youth leader added that adequate fighting equipment and operational vehicles will strengthen security agencies to be proactive in fighting criminals who he said also use sophisticated arms and ammunition to unleash mayhem on the peoplqe.

Frowning at what he termed unlawful arrest, long detentions, maiming and killing of law-abiding citizens, Obiefule called on government to punish any security agent, Police, Army or Vigilante who goes contrary to the law in the cause of discharging their duties.

“Orlu Senatorial Zone is the worst hit of the insecurity situation in Imo State. The Police and the Judiciary should rise and caution the excesses of some security agents including the vigilante outfits. It is a thing out of place that law-abiding youths are being dehumanized and killed on daily basis in Orlu, Orsu, Oru West and Oru East especially”.

“Security agents should be professional in dealing with the insecurity situation so that innocent people and their property would not be destroyed as violations of human rights in South East have grown beyond control”, he said.

The political face-off between the ward Councillors of Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and the council Chairman, Ogbofia Ikechukwu has taken another dimension over alleged plot to impeach him.

One of the Councillors who spoke to journalists on grounds of anonymity for security reasons said that trouble started when the Council Boss started exhibiting high-handedness, abuse of power and political intolerance against the councillors and other political stakeholders in the local government.

The Councillors enumerated some of their grievances against the Council Chairman to include loss of relevance, exclusion from governance, communication breakdown, diversion of palliative materials, favoritism Electoral registration bias and Neglect of development projects.

Others includes, unfulfilled promises, legislative complex decay, unexecuted budget items, unpaid entitlements, no constituency projects, disrespect and humiliation and poor welfare.

He said, “It was regrettable and unfortunate that the chairman transferred ward mobilization duties to his Special Assistants, rendering us powerless in our constituencies. Apart from that we are routinely ignored during ward and community meetings.

“The chairman in his usual manner refuses to answer or return calls, even in emergencies. Despite Governor’s directives on Christmas rice distribution, the Chairman grossly violated his orders, with us and other communities receiving less than half of what was approved.

“The governor’s youth program (FON) and resources have been concentrated in the chairman’s ward, Abaomege. Abaomege ward monopolizes registration buses while other wards are marginalized. In over a year now, only the chairman’s ward has benefited from government projects despite a ₦12 billion budget.

There has been repeated appeals for ward-level projects yet it has not yielded anything. The ₦100 million budgeted for renovation of the legislative chamber remains unaccounted for while the chamber is in disrepair.

“Despite multiple promises by the Chairman to provide us with a legislative bus, none has been provided, while the chairman enjoys luxury vehicles. The Councilors’ 3-bedroom bungalow projects in the 2025 budget remain untouched till date.

“As at today, we are owed five months of legislative votes (LV) stipends. It is also disheartening that no councilor has delivered any infrastructure project, unlike their predecessors.

“We are also excluded from event committees and often embarrassed by the chairman’s aides. Our remuneration is so meager and irregular, with minimal transport allowances even for official functions.

A political analyst and social critic, Ifeanyi Oguta on his part, alleged that the twelve councilors met recently and reached a common decision, to summon their political stakeholders and cry out for intervention.

He stated that on receiving the plot by the councillors, the Chairman immediately summoned the councilors for a meeting. They went, nursing a flicker of hope that relief might come, but it turned out to be a gathering of humiliation.

“The Council Boss boasted that he had the eyes and ears of the governor, and that nothing would happen to him. After scolding them like errant schoolboys, he dismissed the councilors coldly, denying them the chance to voice their pains

It was gathered that the Councillors have officially written a petition against the Chairman to the State Governor, Francis Nwifuru and other major political stakeholders in the state expressing their deep dissatisfaction with the leadership style of Hon. Ikechukwu Ogbofia which was signed by 11 out of the 12 councilors.Ends.

Reacting to the crisis, the Council Chairman, Ogbofia Ikechukwu, who spoke to Journalists through the local government Public Relations officer, Mr Omekannaya Orogwu, dismissed all the allegations against the council boss.

He stated that the local government chairman fulfilled all the need for the councillors, adding that the legislative building is nearly completion.

According to him,” the crisis is politically motivated from those eying the local government seat as another council elections are around the corner.
