The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Uyo branch, has joined its counterpart across the country to protest against the Federal Government’s failure to complete the renegotiated 2009 agreement.

The union ordered the campuses to be shut and suspended examinations scheduled for today, August 26, 2025.

The lecturers mainly professors, associate professors and senior lecturers who came out in their numbers in early hours of Tuesday, where seen marching along the town campus of the university, the university annex and Ikpa road.

They displayed placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Our salaries are too poor’, ‘Pay us sustainable living salaries’, ‘Treat lecturers with some dignity’, ‘We are FG lecturers and not borrowers’, ‘Government please sign and implement our renegotiated agreement,” among others.

Addressing the protest at the university main gate, town campus, the chairperson of the branch, Prof. Opeyemi Olajide lamented that federal university lecturers in Nigeria have been on a fixed salary for over 16 years without any increment despite worsening economic realities.

He also expressed dismay over the Federal Government’s refusal to complete the renegotiated 2009 agreement with the union or renegotiate their salary since 2012 it was due.

Olajide lamented that government had refused to pay third party deductions for salaries paid almost a year ago and arrears of promotion, noting that the union would no longer allow government to treat members welfare with disdain.

He therefore ordered all the students who came for their Computer Based Test, CBT, exams to go home, stressing that no examination will hold, even as he threatened that the union may embark on an indefinite strike if nothing is done to address their concerns.

“Today, university lecturers are staging protest to let the world know how the Federal Government is treating us with disdain. Federal Government of Nigeria has decided to destroy the public university system as it did to public primary and secondary schools. Federal Government still withheld our salaries for three and half months after we have done the job. We have been on same salary for 16 years.

“The Federal Government has refused to fund infrastructure in public universities. Look at where you are taking your exams, is it befitting? The Federal Government has refused to fund infrastructure in public universities, we are not happy about it.
So there is no examination today, go home!,” the Uni Uyo ASUU leader told the students.

Also speaking, Dr Nwachukwu Anyim, former ASUU chairperson of the branch, described as hypocritical and wicked, the Federal Government’s move to review the salaries of political office holders who according to him already earn jumbo salaries, leaving university lecturers out.

He said, “If you expect university lecturers to earn the same salary for over 15 years and you are still imagining reviewing salaries of political office holders, that is wickedness of the highest order. Those who are already earning humongous salaries? You are even thinking of reviewing it, that is wickedness!

“We are doing this to tell Nigerians that we don’t like going on strike but there is no option. My salaries have been withheld, loans that I took, I’ve ended up paying for that loan. Then the deducted salaries and the deductions are in someone’s pocket or bank account – that’s wickedness.

“Yet we still go to class to teach our students. Those in power that maltreat us should know that power is transient. Where are the Ngiges’ of this world today?”

The Plateau State government has blasted the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for circulating an old video of President Bola Tinubu’s June 2025 BRICS summit appearance, which was presented as the President’s ongoing state visit to Brazil alongside Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Mutfwang on Inter-Party Relations, John T. Akans, slammed the APC for circulating the old video, describing it as a shameful act of desperation coming from merchants of ignorance.

According to Akans, the action of the APC has once again exposed its ignorance, lack of credibility and desperation to mislead the public.

Akans explained that Mutfwang was officially invited as part of Tinubu’s delegation to Brazil, a visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s bilateral relations and opening fresh opportunities for economic and agricultural development.

He emphasized that that the inclusion of Mutfwang and Plateau State in the visit underscores the state’s rising influence in national policy direction and Africa’s agricultural transformation drive.

Akans also dismissed what he described as the pathetic and malicious tactics of the APC to discredit the Mutfwang administration, and accused the opposition of attempting to undermine Mutfwang’s achievements.

The governor’s SA also explained that all reputable national media platforms, alongside official presidential handles, had extensively covered the Brazil visit, detailing the President’s activities and the participation of his delegation.

He wondered how the APC could be so ignorant as to release the old video without doing a proper and simple fact-check before descending so low.

Akans warned that the people of Plateau must not fall for what he described as the APC’s politics of misinformation, mal-information, and dis-information while reassuring citizens that Mutfwang remains steadfast, visionary, and committed to driving Plateau’s progress and consolidating the state’s role in Nigeria’s economic future.

The acting Chief Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatry Hospital Calabar, Dr. Theo Osim, has allegedly blocked all efforts to replace him.

This allegation was made by the Senior Staff Associations of University Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, SSAUTHRIAI, on Monday in the hospital premises when they protested, bearing assorted placards with different messages.

They accused Osim of flouting the ministry’s directive on the appointment of a substantive CMD, including victimisation, high-handedness, and harassment of staff.

They noted that Osim has acted as CMD since March 2024, but has deliberately, on several occasions, flouted the directive to advertise for the same position, including a recent directive dated 14th May 2025.

Sector Chairman of SSAUTHRIAI, ComKen Bassey, said, “The letter, which was signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, by Dr. Jimoh Salaudeen, Director of Hospital Services, gave the CMD six weeks to place the advert.

“As we speak, he has not acted on that directive just the same way he has always acted as if he is bigger than the ministry.

“We have been victimised, harassed, suppressed, and intimidated by the same man for daring to speak out for the right thing to be done in this hospital.

“Not only are our members issued queries arbitrarily, but we have also been sent to jail, suspended, and our salaries stopped without due process.

“We have been very peaceful, law-abiding, but today, we are saying enough is enough. We will no longer tolerate this executive rascality,” he stated.

Denying allegations of high-handedness, Osim said he has always acted based on the provisions of the law.

Osim denied ever flouting the directive of the Ministry of Health to advertise for the appointment of a substantive CMD.

“It is not true that I refused to advertise. In fact, this matter is before the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health. Everything has processes, and I am following due process.

“Like I said, you have every right to protest, and I won’t deny you that right because at the end of the day, we will all sit at a table to dialogue on these contentious issues.”

Factional Deputy President-General of the organization, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, made the call in a statemematnt in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.

Ohanaeze reminded the Federal Government of the 2021 ruling of the Federal High Court, which mandated RMAFC to review and reduce lawmakers’ salaries in line with Nigeria’s economic realities.

“We call upon him to immediately suspend any proposed salary increases for political office holders, including the President, Vice President, Governors, Deputy Governors, and lawmakers,” it said.

The organization warned that ignoring the urgent plea is to risk ensnaring Tinubu’s administration in the traps laid by adversaries, ultimately provoking the backlash and wrathful vengeance of an angry and oppressed populace.

It further stated that RMAFC had no constitutional or statutory authority to arbitrarily increase salaries, stressing that such actions represented a gross misuse of its mandate.

“The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated. The RMAFC has ignited a raging fire that, if not extinguished by the presidency, threatens to spiral into uncontrollable rebellion,” it added.
