‘Unnecessary, exploitative’ – Soludo bans graduation, Christmas parties in schools

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has banned graduation ceremonies and Christmas parties in schools across the state to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians. Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has banned graduation ceremonies and Christmas parties in schools across the state to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians.

Soludo gave the directive during a campaign rally organised by the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, on Friday at Awka North, ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

He said the move is part of his administration’s effort to make education more affordable and equitable for all families.

The governor expressed concern over what he described as unnecessary expenses imposed on parents through school-related activities.

“This is to the owners and administrators of government, private and mission schools in Anambra. We have set out some basic standards to ensure that the poor are not made to spend so much just because their children are in school.

“One of the measures includes discontinuing the use of textbooks designed for students to write in. This practice forces parents to buy new textbooks annually.

“Once a child finishes a class, he should be able to pass on his textbooks to his younger siblings,” he said.

Soludo also frowned at the practice of organising ‘graduation ceremonies’ for pupils moving from one class to another, which often required parents to pay for gowns or uniforms.

He described such activities as unnecessary and exploitative.

“Even at Christmas parties, parents should not be made to pay for such. These are too many expenses on poor parents,” the governor said.

Soludo warned that the state government would begin strict enforcement of the new directives, adding that any school found violating them would be sealed.

“These activities will end in Anambra schools because we will begin enforcement and any school that fails to comply or violates these standards will be closed.

“I will personally see to that. And when we seal your school, you can go to court. We will meet there,” he said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting quality, accessible and affordable education for every child in the state.

Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has unveiled the date for the protest march to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Sowore revealed that the protest march to the Presidential Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, will hold on October 20, 2025.

Kanu has been detained since he was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria in 2021 to face trial.

Despite the court discharging and acquitting him, the Nigerian government has refused to grant Kanu freedom.

Currently, the IPOB leader had raised concerns over his deteriorating health in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

In an X post on Friday, Sowore wrote: “October 20, 2025! This is the day Nigerians rise with one voice to demand justice and freedom.

The Berom Youths Moulder, BYM, has decried the renewed attacks by suspected Fulani militants in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State where over 10 people were killed in a recent incident.

In the past one week, communities in Faan district of the council have been the epicenter of attacks by the bandits with the people living under siege.

While reacting to the attacks and killings in a statement jointly signed by the National President and Secretary General, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri and Bature Iliya Adazaram, respectively, the BYM condemned the invasion of the communities, saying it is time the government took proactive measures to end the assaults and restore peace in the state.

The statement made available to DAILY POST on Friday reads: “The Berom Youths Moulder-Association is gravely saddened by the simultaneous attacks on two village of Fan District, Barkin Ladi LGA, that resulted to the killing of Mr. Timothy Ishaku Chollom – 40 years at village of Rapyam by Fulani militants on Monday, October 6, 2025 at about 7:00 pm.

“The continued act of banditry and terrorism has been restrategized by the attackers, who laid ambush against natives of Fan District along Dorowa Babuje-Mangu road at about 3:00 pm of 8th October, 2025.

“As a result, two people have been confirmed killed, six critically injured while two others still missing.

“This underscores the new dimension of the bandits modus operandi and network deployed from venue of security meetings to execution points.

“According to information sourced out, the unsuspecting victims were returning from Security meeting held at Sector 4, Barkin Ladi LGA, unknown to them that the attackers had already been informed about their movement from the Sector base to the ambush-point laid on the main road

“While sadness of the tragic incident is still fresh in our minds as Berom Youths Moulder-Association, particularly the bereaved villages and communities of Fan and the entire Berom land, the Fulani militants are currently mobilizing and converging around the mountains of Ropp Barkin Ladi to launch attacks on villages of Fan.

“Amongst the villages earmarked include Nding Sesut, Nding Loh, Nafan, Rapyam, Nyarwei, Rayiri and Nding Bridge.

“The assailants have also penciled down Gassa and Heipang as their target for a surprising onslaught tonight.”

The statement added, “These, therefore, calls for the following as measures to stem the incessant killings, destructions and displacement as well as disruption perpetrated by the armed Fulani militants: Ban on open and forceful grazing; Observance of all buffer-zones and grazing prohibited sites and areas; Recruitment of natives and/or residents as Civilian JTF as done in the North-East; Dislodging all terrorist enclaves in Plateau State; and other measures deemed necessarily expedient in the prevailing circumstances.”

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has secured the conviction of Mr. Abubakar Bawa Makuku, Sole Administrator and Caretaker Chairman of Sakaba Local Government Area in Kebbi State, and Mr. Ahmed Abdullahi Fakai, Director of Finance and Supply, for contract fraud and abuse of office involving the sum of N54 million.

The duo was arraigned before Justice E. Gakko of the Federal High Court sitting in Birnin-Kebbi on multiple counts bordering on abuse of office, fraudulent contract awards and financial misconduct.

During the trial, prosecution counsel, Mr. Hamza Sani, presented evidence showing that Dakai unlawfully withdrew a total of N54 million from the coffers of Sakaba Local Government in six tranches of N9 million each, in a deliberate attempt to evade financial reporting protocols.

The court also heard how Makuku corruptly awarded contracts without following due process and personally benefited from the diversion of N10 million earmarked for official engagements of the local government.

One of the charges reads: “That you, Ahmed Abdullahi Fakai, in June 2016 or thereabout, at Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, while serving as Director of Finance and Supply, withdrew a total of N54,000,000.00 (Fifty-Four Million Naira) from the Sakaba Local Government bank account at First Bank Nigeria Plc in six tranches of N9,000,000.00 each, with the intent to avoid the legal duty of reporting the said sum, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 19(1)(c) and punishable under Section 19(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.”

Another charge against the Sole Administrator reads: “That you, Abubakar Bawa Makuku, in May 2016 or thereabout, at Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, while serving as Sole Administrator, used your office to confer corrupt advantage upon yourself by receiving N10,000,000.00 (Ten Million Naira) in cash from the Finance and Supply office of Sakaba Local Government. The funds were designated for official government activities but were not utilized for their intended purpose, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.”

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them.

However, in his judgment, Justice Gakko found them guilty as charged and convicted them accordingly.

Fakai was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of N2.5 million, while Makuku received a four-year jail term or a fine of N1 million as compensation to Sakaba Local Government, in addition to another N1.5 million fine.

Abass Adigun, House of Representatives member from Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, has explained why Ibadan State should be created.

Adigun said Ibadan is bigger than the South-East and three local governments in Bayelsa State.

He disclosed this during the debate on a bill for the creation of Ibadan State, which passed through second reading on the floor of the lower legislative chamber on Thursday.

The lawmaker sponsored the bill for the creation of Ibadan State, which would be carved out from the current Oyo State and some part of Ondo State.

Recently, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, urged President Bola Tinubu to fast track the creation of the state.

Adigun said: “Ibadan as it is today, the size is about 25 thousand square meters while the whole South-East region with five states is about 33,000 square meters. In terms of population we have what it takes to be a state.

“One local government in Ibadan city is bigger than three local governments in Bayelsa State.

“The remark led to a rowdy session as lawmakers called for a point of order asking that he should reverse the decision.”

His comments, however, drew the attention of other lawmakers who called for a point of order, demanding that he retract the statement.
