The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has broken his silence over threats from US President Donald Trump to invade Nigeria with military force over a purported Christian genocide.

In a post on X, Obi advised Trump to seek diplomatic options.

According to him, Nigeria and America have enjoyed a good relationship for many years.

He wrote: “The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ (CPC) and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023 and as I have repeatedly lamented, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop. It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC-led government/leaders to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria, where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed, a nation where peace, truth and justice reign!

“As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose.”

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly, Agbese described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “meticulous economic planner” and expressed confidence that every borrowing plan will be directed toward its intended purpose.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has assured Nigerians that the federal government will prudently utilise recently approved loans.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly, Agbese described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “meticulous economic planner” and expressed confidence that every borrowing plan will be directed toward its intended purpose.

This assurance comes after both chambers of the National Assembly approved President Tinubu’s request to raise a total of $2.347 billion from the international capital market. The funds are intended to part-finance the 2025 budget deficit and refinance maturing Eurobonds.

According to the House Committee on Aids, Loans, and Debt Management, the borrowing plan is split into two parts: $1.23 billion to fund the 2025 budget deficit and $1.12 billion to refinance a Eurobond maturing in November 2025. The loans may be sourced through Eurobond issuance, loan syndication, bridge financing, or direct borrowing from multilateral institutions.

Recall that lawmakers also approved the issuance of Nigeria’s first-ever Sovereign Sukuk of up to $500 million, aimed at attracting Islamic-compliant investors and diversifying the country’s external borrowing options.

Acknowledging concerns over rising public debt, Agbese emphasised that the administration’s borrowing plans are guided by clear frameworks and measurable developmental outcomes. “Every loan under this administration is carefully planned with repayment and development in mind. Nigerians can trust that the funds will be used responsibly,” he said.

Agbese also highlighted the National Assembly’s role in maintaining oversight, stressing that all loans are scrutinised to ensure transparency and accountability.

The lawmaker pointed to Tinubu’s track record as Lagos State Governor as evidence of his capacity for strategic planning and fiscal discipline. He added that the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda aims at long-term economic growth, job creation, industrial expansion, and infrastructural renewal.

“No doubt, President Tinubu will utilise every loan for its intended purpose. Nigerians should remain patient as the administration implements measures aimed at sustainable development,” Agbese added.

Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines and veteran broadcaster, Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, has warned President Bola Tinubu against visiting U.S. President, Donald Trump, describing such move as politically insensitive and diplomatically unnecessary.

Trump also warned that Nigeria could lose US aid if it fails to tackle insecurity.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese Ijebu, and monitored by our correspondent in Abeokuta, Farounbi insisted that Tinubu must avoid actions that portray Nigeria as seeking validation from leaders who have little regard for Africa’s dignity.

He maintained that Trump’s recent rhetoric on Nigeria and his past policies towards the continent showed “a lack of respect for African nations.”

Farounbi blamed Trump’s recent decision on Nigeria’s poor diplomatic response to international criticism, describing the U.S. action as a predictable outcome of silence and inaction.

He said, “Nigeria’s president represents the soul of over 200 million people. He should not visit anyone who once called African nations ‘shithole countries.’ We must act like a nation that values itself, not one begging to be recognized.

“We cannot claim we didn’t see this coming. For years, Catholic bishops from Benue and Plateau States have appeared before the U.S. Congress and European Parliament, presenting statistics of Christians killed by militants, yet Nigeria offered no strong counter-narrative.”

The veteran diplomat expressed concern that Nigeria had not maintained a full-fledged ambassador in Washington for years, leaving the country’s image undefended.

Farounbi noted that the international community often relies on reports and testimonies submitted by advocacy groups and NGOs, many of which operate with bias or limited understanding of Nigeria’s complexities.

“When you refuse to speak for yourself, others will speak for you,” he warned. “And when they do, they will not tell your story with fairness.”

He asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen Nigeria’s embassies, empower diplomats, and ensure accurate representation of the nation’s challenges.

Meanwhile, Farounbi urged the Nigerian government to confront insecurity not through propaganda but through justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.
