Senate confirms new members of NCC Board

Following a successful screening by its Committee on Communications, the Senate on Tuesday, confirmed the appointment of Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe, South West, as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC.

Adopting the Committee’s report during its plenary session, the Senate also confirmed Maryam Bayi, North East, Senator Ramoni Olalekan Mustafa (South West), and Ikechukwu Ugwuegede (South East) as Commissioners of the NCC Board.

Other members of the Board confirmed by the Senate are Princess Oforitsenere Emiko (South South) and Christopher Sandy Okorie (South South).

The Chairman and Commissioners join the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida (North West), Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami (North Central) and Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, Rimini H. Makama (North Central), who had been previously confirmed, on the Board.

Operatives of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC on Wednesday, shut down the warehouses of five textile distributors allegedly engaging in unethical business practices.

Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC Director, Corporate Affairs, said in a statement on Wednesday, that operators of the warehouses were engaged in deceptive sales of underweight and shortened fabric materials to unsuspecting consumers.

The commission noted that the act breached the provisions of the FCCPA, 2018.

The enforcement exercise, according to the statement, was led by FCCPC Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Mrs Boladale Adeyinka.

Ijagwu said the operation followed FCCPC weeks-long surveillance around Kano markets.

The textile products used in the alleged sharp practices include LGR Product, Hightex Product, U&Me Product, Nana Tex Product, UE Product, V Levintus Product and Mama Africa Product, S-U Velt Product and Jisiki Product.

Speaking on the development, the EVC/CEO of FCCPC, Mr Tunji Bello, reiterated the FCCPC’s zero tolerance for any practice that exploits Nigerian consumers.

“By undermining honest traders and businesses that comply with lawful standards, this nefarious practice of selling underweight products can drive legitimate retailers out of the market, thereby reducing consumer choice and entrenching anti-competitive behaviour,” the FCCPC boss said.

Addressing the press in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, said the Tinubu administration is capable of handling the country’s security challenges and is open to partnering with the United States of America and any other country in achieving desired success.

“This strategic overhaul is designed to infuse fresh energy, innovation, and accountability into our national defence and intelligence systems,” the Minister added.

“The mission is to deliver better results, strengthen coordination among the services, and stamp out terrorism and violent crime in every part of Nigeria.”

Speaking further, the Minister said the President’s directive to the service chiefs is unequivocal, “that every inch of Nigerian territory must be secured, and every citizen must live free from fear.”

He said the military and other security agencies are winning the war on terrorism.

According to Idris, the results in the past years and most especially in the last two years of President Tinubu’s leadership are real and remarkable.

He noted that the President has always given the military his absolute support, assuring that there is the political will to remove the last vestiges of this menace from our country.

Idris said the Tinubu government shall continue to make the suspects accountable for disrupting the peace of our country, in consonance with the rule of law.

“The Government of Nigeria remains open and willing to work closely with the government of the United States, other friendly nations and partners, to achieve our shared goal of the complete elimination of terrorism on Nigerian soil.”

The Former Senator, who was full of joys and cheers as he celebrated his birthday, noted that, “you may recall that I have been nagging that politics is part of my religion and with this belief I see no day I will get out of the political circle”.

“The confirmation of the minister-nominee would have been next on the list, but we need security clearance,” Akpabio informed the senate.
