Ebonyi State House of Assembly has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Ebonyi State Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) Board to sanitize its operations and end the harassment of citizens in the guise of revenue collection across the state.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, during plenary at the Assembly Complex.

The session was presided over by the Speaker, Chief Moses Ije-Odunwa.

Ikoro lamented the activities of unverified individuals and groups allegedly contracted by the IGR Board to enforce tax and traffic collections, describing their conduct as “lawless and dehumanizing.”

“You see people carrying planks, popularly called ‘2 by 2’, chasing motorcyclists and drivers in the name of IGR enforcement.

“Many have no form of identification or uniform. The protection of lives and property is the first duty of the government, and this abnormality must stop,” Ikoro stated.

He urged the House to invite the leadership of the IGR Board to explain the mode of engagement of contractors and ensure proper identification of authorized personnel.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Ezza South Constituency, Hon. Friday Ogbuewu, condemned what he described as “a reign of terror” by some revenue agents, accusing them of tarnishing the image of the state government.

“What happened yesterday in Abakaliki was very unfortunate. Our people were being beaten and killed in the name of enforcing IGR collection.

“This board is not projecting the image of Ebonyi State positively,” Ogbuewu lamented.

He called for a full House session with the board’s leadership to address the situation and review the practice of contracting traffic and revenue enforcement.

Similarly, the member representing Ebonyi North West, Hon. Aloysius Nwodo, decried high-level extortion by both revenue collectors and some security personnel, urging the Assembly to exercise its oversight powers.

“At Ishieke Police Division and other checkpoints, motorists and cyclists are extorted daily.

“The Assembly must review and caution such practices to ensure the people feel the positive impact of government policies,” Nwodo said.

In his ruling, Speaker Moses Ije-Odunwa directed the Ebonyi IGR Board to reform its operations within two weeks or face summons from the House.

He also cautioned against the extortion of petty traders and ordered that all task force teams be properly branded for easy identification.

“The board should sit up and sanitize revenue collection in line with the Governor’s vision.

“If the harassment continues, the House will summon them. Nobody should collect money from petty traders, and all tax force members must wear identifiable uniforms,” Odunwa said.

He further advised motorists, tricyclists, and motorcyclists to keep their vehicle documents up to date to avoid unnecessary harassment.

Meanwhile, the House also approved funds for the 2025 Christmas Palliative following a letter from Governor Francis Nwifuru, which sought legislative concurrence for the disbursement approved by the State Executive Council on October 29, 2025.

The motion to accept the governor’s request as a working document of the House was moved by Hon. Kingsley Ikoro and seconded by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu (Ikwo North).

In another development, the House passed for second reading HAB No. 007 of 2025: A Bill to Amend the Ebonyi State College of Health Sciences and Technology Law, 2025, which seeks to rename the institution located in Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The bill was committed to the House Committees on Education, Health, Justice, and Judiciary for further legislative action.

Lawmaker representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Senator Seriake Dickson has reacted to the claim of ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria and the subsequent threat by the US President Donald Trump.

DAILY POST reports that Trump on Friday last week, placed Nigeria on a watch list by naming the nation a Country of Particular Concerns over alleged killing of Christians.

The US President also placed the American military on red alert, saying if the Nigerian government failed to protect the Christians from the Islamic extremists, they would intervene.

Reacting, Senator Seriake, in a statement on Wednesday night, said the country needs help from any collaborators to ensure that the terrorists are eradicated.

The lawmaker, however, opined that the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions of the country “must be respected by all”.

Part of the statement reads, “Late President Buhari’s policy of appointing mostly Muslims to head all the security services during his eight years in office further worsened these perceptions.

“As Nigerians, we must be honest with ourselves that the killings have gone on for too long and government and security forces have been overwhelmed. We need help! No nation can confront terrorism in isolation. We must therefore work with our allies and partners to defeat this menace once and for all.

“It is on the strength of the foregoing that I strongly recommend that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should collaborate with President Donald Trump, the US Government, and other allies and friends of Nigeria to flush out these marauding terrorists.

“He should also improve relations with our neighbouring countries whose cooperation and support will be essential in the war against terrorism”.

A barber identified as Thomas Edeh from Rijo community in Oge Council Ward of Ado Local Government Area of Benue State has been killed by suspected armed herdsmen in a renewed attack and several persons displaced.

Scores of people were also reportedly missing following the dastardly attack on the community by the killer herdsmen.

The incident occurred in the late hours on Tuesday when the invaders attacked the community, located some few kilometres from Igumale, headquarters of Ado LGA.

The victim, who is an indigene of Effium in Ebonyi State, had been residing in Rijo where he operated a barbing salon in the popular Idokpo Garri Market.

He was said to be on his farm when he was attacked and shot dead.

A community leader, who spoke to journalists in Makurdi on condition of anonymity, described the killing as unfortunate, alleging that herders had repeatedly stolen the victim’s farm produce despite his warnings.

“The herders have been stealing his farm produce. He persistently warned them to stop, but the best they could do was to eliminate him.

“Our people can no longer go to farms or markets. Children are afraid to attend school.

“Even riding motorcycles or bicycles to work in Igumale is risky because of fear of the unknown,” he said.

He called on the government at all levels to urgently deploy more security personnel to Ado council, particularly the Rijo community, to prevent further attacks.

Meanwhile the Chairman of Ado council, Mr. Sunday Oche, could not be reached to confirm the incident as of the time of this report.

However the incident was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet.
