The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has said that Governor Uba Sani has transformed the agro-industrial landscape of Kaduna State within two and half years.

Speaking when he led a delegation of Commissioners of Agriculture from the 36 states of the country on a courtesy call to Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Wednesday, he noted that the Governor has become a point of reference in the agriculture and agro-industrial sector in Nigeria.

The Minister recalled that Kaduna used to be a textile hub which was an agro-based industry because its raw material was from cotton but ‘’today we are seeing a very different value addition to some of our staple crops.’’

According to him, what Governor Uba Sani is doing to agriculture in Kaduna State aligns with what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ‘’ has been talking about on food security and food sovereignty.’’

Senator Kyari noted that apart from just production of raw materials, the Governor is also adding value to agriculture, maintaining that Kaduna State was the first subnational where the Special Agro-Processing Zone(SAPZ) was launched in April.

The Minister said that he and his delegation went round Kaduna State as part of the 47th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Agriculture since, they arrived on Monday and were impressed with the Governor’s giant strides in Agriculture.

He said that they had visited OLAM Poultry Farm and Feed mill, TMDK, a company involved in agro-allied processing, Tomato Jos and the Agricultural Quality Assurance Centre(AQAC).

According to the Minister, these agro-allied companies are located outside Kaduna town, which will create jobs in rural areas and check rural-urban migration.

Senator Kyari commended Kaduna State and other sub nationals, for aligning with President Tinubu’s clarion call on food security, which is defined ‘’as the availability, accessibility and affordability of diverse and nutritious food.’’

The Minister also applauded Governor Uba Sani for his inclusive style of Governance, which has attracted prominent members of the opposition to the ruling APC in Kaduna State.

‘’We were quite impressed with what we saw and we had no doubt whatsoever, that our brother Distinguished Senator Uba Sani will perform wonderfully well,’’ he said.

He recalled that when the party primaries were held to nominate the APC gubernatorial candidate, he was the Deputy National Chairman(North) and ‘’I had no doubt whatsoever that you will come and be a reference point in Nigeria’s politics.’’

In his remarks, Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, commended the Governor for exceed the Malabo declaration, by exceed the 10% budgetary allocation to Agriculture.

According to him, Governor Uba Sani may even exceed the 12% that he has budgeted for Agriculture, to 20% by the end of his two terms in office.

Responding, Governor Sani thanked the two Ministers for choosing Kaduna as the host of the National Council of Agriculture and Food Security, describing it as a great honour.

He disclosed that the duo were his colleagues in the senate and they supported him when he decided to contest for the governorship of Kaduna state.

The Governor maintained that Kaduna State is the only subnational in the entire north that has AQAC, which will help in certifying farmers produce for export.

Governor Uba Sani also said that Kaduna State is the only state to has launched the SAPZ in northern Nigeria and the first to launch it in the country, followed by Cross Rivers and Oyo States.

‘’We are investing heavily in agriculture because it contributes about 43% of our GDP and 60% of our workforce. When we came in, the agric budget was just 0.5%. But today, I am glad to say that our budget for agriculture is 12.5%,’’ he disclosed.

According to him, Kaduna State is the only state in the country that has distributed 900 trucks of free fertilizer to smallholder farmers in the last two years.

‘’We formed a team that included our traditional owners, our religious leaders, our community leaders, as well as our farmers, the association of farmers in the state.

‘’We didn’t allow politics to guide us. We did it without looking at which party you belong to. What place you come from. We distributed bags of fertilisers to deserving small holder farmers free of charge and across the state,’’ he added.

Legal counsel to human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has said that there is no law that empowers the police to declare his client wanted, stressing that the police acted outside the law.

The legal counsel stated this on Thursday while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a programme on Channels Television monitored by DAILY POST.

He explained that under the law, declaring a person wanted is a legal process that must follow due procedure and be backed by a court order.

“When you are looking for somebody and cannot find him after a criminal complaint, investigation, or charge, and the person is evading arrest, that is when you can seek the order of the court,” he said.

The counsel added that “when you publish an individual as being wanted without the backing of a court order, you are not only committing a tortious act and defaming that individual, but also acting unconstitutionally. Declaring Sowore wanted in this manner is arbitrary and reflects total ignorance of the law they claim to be enforcing.”

Emphasising the constitutional rights of citizens, he said, “A Nigerian citizen has the right to freedom of movement and personal liberty as provided by the Constitution. Before you can declare a person a fugitive or outlaw, it must not stem from personal malice; it must follow due process backed by a court order.”

The legal counsel revealed that the matter is already before the court, which has granted an order restraining the Commissioner of Police from carrying out the effects of the declaration.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Abuja on Thursday, Nwoko said political discussions, decisions, and processes should be transparent, inclusive, and accessible to everyone.

He stated that in view of this, political and other leaders in the country must begin to think out of the box for the betterment of the people.

​The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has opined that to dismantle the grip of drug addiction in Nigeria, there is the need to transcend dialogue and move towards action marked by precision and purpose.

The NYCN in a letter to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), proposed Mandatory Drug Screening at Every Critical Gateway of Nigerian Life, saying that the framework is not conceived as a punitive measure, but a vital tool for protection and intervention.

The letter signed by NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar noted that drug crisis threatens to unravel the nation’s national fabric, believing that individual effort is not enough.

He explained that there is urgent need for a comprehensive, systematic defense that backs up every good parent and citizen in Nigeria, stressing that their goal is to establish a national system that flags individuals who desperately need help, as the nation’s future is irreparably damaged.

Abubakar stated that the council proposed 10-point plan to safeguard the nation’s institutions urging NDLEA to champion it by testing students before they write the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), and before they receive a letter of admission to any tertiary institution (university or polytechnic).

It also enjoined NDLEA to test graduates before they collect their university degree certificates, and before they enter or receive their discharge certificate from the NYSC orientation camps.

The NYCN suggested that candidates should be tested before any job appointment in the public or private sector, and enforce routine, periodic testing for all employed individuals.

On politics and leadership, the letter stressed that no political party shall issue an expression or nomination form to any citizen including all political appointees without first receiving a mandatory, negative drug test and a routine check after three (3) month, saying that leaders must uphold the highest standards.

​It stated that NDLEA should engage proactively with the cultural icons and musicians to end the public display and use of all forms of hard drugs, ensure they inspire, rather than endanger, the youth.

​The NYCN also advised that NDLEA should champion the necessary drive to ensure the entire institutional framework is enshrined in law, establishing clear, enforceable national legislation, believing that it is the only way to safeguard the most precious resource and the young generation.

​Abubakar said, “We believe the NDLEA must be just as intentional and relentless in its efforts to prosecute the drug dealers who poison our streets as it is in securing the pathways for intervention and rehabilitation for those who fall victim.”

He explained that Nigeria’s destiny is worth the fight, urging NDLEA to take the lead in transforming the proposal into national policy by working together to clean house, institution by institution, and build the drug-free nation Nigerians deserve.
