A Federal High Court in Jalingo has freed 13 inmates who were held in the Taraba State Correctional Centre for between one and six years without trial.

Their release followed a lawsuit filed by human rights lawyer, Barrister John Nkemnagum Okezie, who represented them free of charge. He sued the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) for violating their fundamental rights.

In his ruling, Justice Maskur Salisu described the long detention of the inmates without trial as a gross violation of their constitutional rights.

“The prolonged detention of citizens without trial is not only unconstitutional but an affront to human dignity,” the judge declared.

He ordered their immediate release and awarded a total of ₦48m in damages to the 13 freed inmates. 

The court officially enforced the order on November 3, 2025.

Justice Salisu further cautioned security agencies to operate within the confines of the law and uphold the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Barrister Okezie told journalists that his motivation was to help decongest overcrowded prisons and ensure justice for the poor.

“This was a pro bono effort to make sure justice is not reserved for only those who can afford it,” he said.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, warning that the situation in the war-torn country is rapidly worsening following the fall of a key city to paramilitary forces.

Speaking on Tuesday at the World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Guterres urged Sudan’s rival factions to embrace dialogue and end what he described as a “nightmare of violence”.

“The horrifying crisis in Sudan is spiralling out of control. I call on all sides to come to the negotiating table and bring an end to this senseless bloodshed, now,” the UN chief said.

His comments come after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, locked in conflict with the Sudanese army since April 2023, captured the strategic city of El-Fasher late last month after an 18-month siege.

According to reports, the RSF’s takeover has been accompanied by widespread atrocities, including summary executions, sexual violence, looting, abductions, and attacks on humanitarian workers. Communication with residents in El-Fasher remains largely severed, raising fears of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe.

“El-Fasher and the surrounding areas in North Darfur have long been epicentres of suffering, hunger, and displacement. Since the RSF entered the city, the situation has deteriorated dramatically. Hundreds of thousands of civilians remain trapped, many dying from malnutrition, disease, and violence,” Guterres said.

He also condemned the ongoing violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws reported across Sudan, calling for urgent global attention to the crisis.

Turning to the Middle East, Guterres also expressed deep concern over fresh violations of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which had brought a temporary end to more than two years of conflict.

The UN chief’s remarks followed reports of renewed Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, after the Israeli military said that three bodies retrieved from the enclave were not those of its hostages.

Hamas officials said over 100 people were killed in Israeli attacks last Tuesday, while another 45 died in earlier strikes on October 19, according to the territory’s civil defence agency.

“I am deeply troubled by the continued breaches of the Gaza ceasefire,” Guterres said. “These violations must stop, and all parties must fully comply with the terms of the first phase of the peace agreement.”

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has received the terms of settlement between Guardian Newspapers Nigeria Limited and Mr. Attah John Onoja, a senior officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, effectively ending a high-profile defamation suit earlier filed by the officer.

Onoja, who serves as Commander of the Mining Marshals, had sued Guardian Newspapers over a publication dated June 23, 2025, titled ‘Community Alleges Involvement of Mining Marshals in Illegal Mining’.

He described the report as false, malicious, and defamatory, and sought a court declaration to that effect, a public apology, retraction, injunction and N2 billion in exemplary damages.

Filed as suit number GWD/CV/177/25, the case has now been amicably resolved following the submission of Terms of Settlement jointly signed by both parties and their counsel.

According to the document, Guardian Newspapers acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the publication and agreed to delete the article, retract it, and publish a formal apology across its official website, social media platforms, and print edition.

The retraction, which must appear prominently on page 2 or 3 of the newspaper, will explicitly state that the earlier report was “unfounded, regretted, and not intended to impugn the Claimant’s integrity”.

As part of the agreement, the newspaper will also conduct and publish an exclusive interview with Onoja to highlight his professional contributions and achievements as Commander of the Mining Marshals.

Notably, Onoja in his magnanimity forfeited the monetary compensation that would have been paid, and released the paper from any future claims arising from the disputed publication.

The settlement, dated August 15, 2025, was signed by both parties. The FCT High Court has adopted the terms of settlement as consent judgment, thereby bringing the matter to a formal close.

Speaking to Fox News, he said President Trump would soon receive policy recommendations on possible U.S. responses to the alleged killings.

“We are going to get right to work and give President Trump a full menu of options to stop these killings,” he said.

Trump had earlier hinted at potential U.S. military action, citing escalating attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

He announced via his Truth Social account that Nigeria had been redesignated as a “Country of Particular Concern,” accusing “radical Islamists” of targeting Christians.

“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” Trump wrote, warning that the U.S. could “go in guns blazing” if Nigeria failed to act.

The Nigerian government, however, dismissed the allegations of genocide, insisting that the nation remains committed to protecting the rights of all citizens regardless of faith.

President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s constitutional guarantee of religious freedom and stressed that his administration continues to engage religious leaders to foster national unity.

“The portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality,” Tinubu said, adding that his government remains dedicated to ensuring peace and coexistence across all regions and faiths.
