Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has urged the Federal Government to engage experienced diplomats to defend Nigeria’s image following US President Donald Trump’s recent statement designating the country as a “country of particular concern.”

Trump, in a post shared on his Truth Social account and the White House’s X handle on Friday, claimed that Christians were being massacred in Nigeria, describing the situation as “a genocide.”

Reacting to the development, Ndume said Nigeria must urgently counter the narrative by engaging respected diplomats and credible international figures.

“Before things get out of hand, Nigeria should engage seasoned diplomats like Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Babagana Kingibe, Professor Sulu Gambari, and Amina Mohammed of the United Nations,” Ndume said in a statement on Saturday.

He added that the Federal Government should liaise with the American Embassy in Abuja to provide accurate information about Nigeria’s security situation.

“We can change the narrative by ensuring that we aren’t tagged a ‘country of particular concern,’ but rather a ‘country of special concern,’ so they can give us all the support, including arms and ammunition, to effectively contain terrorists,” he said.

Ndume also criticised the Bola Tinubu administration and the Senate for failing to respond promptly to earlier warnings from US lawmaker Riley Moore regarding Nigeria’s security image.

He urged the government to engage Washington with factual data showing that terrorist attacks in Nigeria affect both Muslims and Christians.

“I have alerted the government and even moved a motion. Nigeria is a sovereign state,” Ndume said.

“It’s not about what the United States can do to us, but about the misconception and ripple effects of classifying us as a country of concern. Muslims have been killed too. The genocide isn’t against Christians but Nigerians generally.”

In a post shared on X on Sunday, Sowore warned Nigerians not to celebrate such rhetoric, saying foreign intervention has never brought peace to any nation.

“The latest threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch military action in Nigeria, allegedly to protect Christians, may sound appealing to some. Still, history has shown this to be perilous,” Sowore wrote.

He urged Nigerians regardless of religion to reject the idea of foreign interference, stressing that America’s past military interventions had only worsened the countries involved.

“The United States and its allies have a long record of military interventions that leave nations more unstable than before. They failed to secure peace in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, or Syria, and they won’t bring salvation to Nigeria through bombs or boots on the ground,” he said.

According to Sowore, what Nigeria needs is not help from abroad but genuine leadership that can protect citizens and build a just society.

“What Nigeria truly needs is not a foreign savior, but legitimate, accountable leadership one that protects all citizens, upholds justice, and ends the cycles of corruption and violence that have left the nation broken,” he added.

Sowore also took a swipe at the political class, saying real change would not come from leaders like President Bola Tinubu.

“Trump does not care about Nigerians, not Christians, Muslims, or anyone else. Our deliverance will never come from abroad; it must come from within, through real leadership not the Tinubus of this world and national renewal,” he said.

President Trump had on Friday designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern, citing what he described as ongoing violence against Christians and failure of the government to protect religious minorities.

Reacting, Onanuga quoted an excerpt from Tinubu’s recent address to newly appointed service chiefs.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has commended the designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ by the United States government.

Reacting to the development in a statement on Sunday, IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful noted that a Canadian court had earlier designated Nigeria’s major political parties – All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as terrorist organizations.

Thanking US President Donald Trump for taking the decision, IPOB described the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern as a moral victory for justice, truth and the sanctity of human life.

The group in the same vein urged the US government to probe ethno-religious killings in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East.

The statement read, “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the able leadership of our supreme leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, warmly welcomes the recent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by the government of the United States.
