FG’s Tax Reforms ’ll Boost IGR, Strengthen Subnational Economies, Says Adedeji

The Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Zacch Adedeji, has said the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reforms are designed to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and strengthen subnational economies across the country.

Adedeji stated this on Tuesday in Kano at the Northern Revenue Conference, themed ‘Readiness, Reforms, and Digital Transformation’.

Represented by the Secretary, Joint Tax Board (JTB), Mr Adesokan Olusegun, Adedeji said the reforms aimed to simplify tax processes, promote voluntary compliance and create a fair and transparent tax system.

He said the Nigeria Tax Administration (Provisions) Act was one of the country’s most significant fiscal reforms, targeted at improving efficiency, transparency and equity in tax administration.

According to him, the act would simplify compliance, reduce bottlenecks and promote a predictable, technology-driven tax environment powered by digital tools.

Adedeji highlighted the integration of Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) across federal, state and local governments as a major step towards harmonizing taxpayer databases and enhancing real-time data sharing.

He said the joint tax board was working with state governments to align local tax laws with the new Act to curb multiple taxation and support subnational economies.

The FIRS chairman disclosed that the service had developed a Tax Harmonisation and Evaluation Framework and initiated capacity-building programmes for state revenue authorities to enhance institutional efficiency.

He urged state governors to grant autonomy to their revenue agencies as provided in the new tax law, describing it as key to building a fair, efficient and transparent tax system.

Earlier, the Chairman, Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), Dr Zaid Abubakar, said the conference marked a new phase in tax administration in Northern Nigeria.

He urged state revenue agencies to embrace digital transformation and institutional reforms in line with the evolving national tax system.

Abubakar said the 2025 reforms required precision, digital competence and bold leadership to enhance efficiency and service delivery, adding that the era of guesswork in tax administration is over.

The KIRS boss urged the participants to use the forum to exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration for a more efficient and taxpayer-friendly system. (NAN)

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday jetted out to Belem, Brazil, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference.

This was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha.

DAILY POST reports that the two-day summit, hosted by Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in partnership with international stakeholders, is scheduled to be held in the Amazonian capital of Pará state.

The statement revealed that Shettima will join several world leaders, global development partners and business executives for the high-level sessions.

“On the first day of engagements in Belem, Senator Shettima will attend the general plenary of leaders where he is expected to present Nigeria’s climate action address,” the statement read.

According to the statement, Shettima will also participate in the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Fund and join a roundtable on Climate and Nature chaired by President Lula.

He will also hold bilateral meetings aimed at securing Nigeria’s participation in global carbon markets.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to political thugs ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election not to undermine security or compromise the credibility of the exercise.

Egbetokun gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja at the Cleen Foundation 2025 Anambra Governorship Election Security Threat Assessment (STA) Dissemination.

The IGP, represented by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia from the Operations Department, vowed that security agencies would not tolerate any act capable of undermining the credibility of the poll.

Egbetokun also cautioned political parties, their candidates and supporters to strictly adhere to electoral rules, particularly the provisions of the peace accord they signed, warning that any breach would attract decisive sanctions.

“We have made all the necessary arrangements to provide security at the Independent National Electoral Commission offices, for officials, international and local observers, as well as all the law-abiding citizens.

“We assure you that with the security arrangements which have been placed, we are very optimistic that the election will be conducted devoid of any incident.

“We urge party leaders to remember there is a peace accord that was signed by all the political parties to actually abide by what they have signed.

“Anybody who breaches or tries to cause any problem, the law will actually be applied on the person or persons,” he said.

Egbetokun warned that anyone caught attempting to disrupt the electoral process would be promptly arrested, thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, represented by the ACG of Operations, David Ojelabi, also cautioned the electorate against any form of disorderly conduct during the election.

Audi urged the electorate to abide by electoral guidelines and cooperate fully with security personnel to ensure a peaceful exercise.

“With the number of our personnel on ground, alongside operatives from other security and intelligence agencies, we are confident that Anambra will witness a violence-free election on Saturday.

“We have been planning, training and engaging with stakeholders and I am confident that when we converge in Anambra, we will work together to ensure a peaceful election,” he said.

The Director of Programmes at Cleen Foundation, Mr Salaudeen Hashim, said the organisation’s Security Threat Assessment (STA) being disseminated was designed to support security agencies in strengthening their operational strategies and ensuring safe, credible elections.

He explained that the assessment also reinforces the foundation’s commitment to election security while highlighting emerging areas of concern and providing evidence-based insights to guide proactive response measures.

“There has been a slight shift in the threat landscape from our initial STA report previously released.

“This updated assessment is intended to guide stakeholders in preventing violence, strengthening accountability and identifying security risks that could threaten the credibility and safety of the election.

“Our findings indicate a high likelihood of pre-election violence, which requires urgent and proactive measures to mitigate risks.

“Security concerns remain the most significant threat ahead of the Anambra 2025 election, driven largely by distrust in the neutrality of security personnel and identified coordination gaps,” he said.

Hashim recommended the retraining of security personnel on neutrality, de-escalation and human-rights-based policing.

He also called for the establishment and effective use of public complaint mechanisms, urging security agencies to remain impartial, accountable and professional throughout the process.

He further encouraged the media to counter misinformation, promote factual reporting and exercise moderation in their coverage to avoid inflaming tensions.

According to him, the 2025 Anambra election will serve as a critical test of the state’s ability to balance security and democratic values.

Hashim noted that the conduct of security agencies and the tone of media reportage will significantly shape the credibility and outcome of the poll. (NAN)

The National Library of Nigeria, Abia State branch has remained closed for three months, following the sealing of its temporary office in Ohokobe Mbaocha Hall, Umuahia North LGA of the State.

The situation, according to the Director of the branch, Mr. Enang Ikpi Efoli , is because of the inability of successive administrations in Abia State to pay accumulated debt owed the Ohokobe Mbaocha community which now stands at N13.2 Million.

Consequently, all staff of the the National Library working in the office have been at home redundantly as the community insists that the complex would only be unsealed when the debt is cleared.

Explaining the situation to DAILY POST, the Director of National Library of Nigeria, Abia State branch, Mr Enang Ikpi Efoli said that the previous administration of former Governor Theodore Orji rented the office for the Library at N1.2 Million per anum with a further arrangement to provide a land where the Federal government would build a permanent site in the State.

According to to him, administration of Ex-Governor Orji paid N6 Million covering five years rent , leaving one year arrears.

He regretted that Orji’s successor, Okezie Ikpeazu allegedly refused to pay a dime to the Ohokobe Mbaocha community, making the debt to increase.

He added that the management team of the Library in Abia has also approached concerned authorities in the current administration of Governor Alex Otti to help in defraying the debt to enable the staff return back to work, saying that their appeals have not yielded anything.

Mr. Efoli who said that judiciary staff, information scientists , Lawyers, University lecturers, international researchers, are being denied the opportunity of accessing important documents in the Library, threatened that the Library may relocate to another State where their service is are better appreciated.

Confirming the development to Journalists ,the Chairman of Ohokobe Mbaocha community in Umuahia North LGA, Mr Nduka Awomukwu said his community still maintained cordial relationship with the Library but would only reopen the place unless the large debt is payed.

He also said that his community would also take the National Library of Nigeria to the Court to recover their ‘trapped’ money from the Federal agency.

When the matter was brought to the attention of Goveernor Alex Otti at Government House during his monthly media chat with Journalists in September, he said he was not aware of the situation but directed the concerned authorities to immediately look into it and get back to him.

However, when DAILY POST visited the Ohokobe Mbaocha community Hall housing the National Library of Nigeria on Tuesday at 2:pm: , the place was still sealed by the host community.

Tinubu Seeks Senate’s Approval of N1.15trn Domestic Loan

President Bola Tinubu has sought the approval of the Senate for a fresh N1.15 trillion loan from the domestic debt market to finance the deficit in the 2025 budget.

Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter addressed to President of Senate Godswill Akpabio and read during plenary on Tuesday.

According to the letter, the proposed borrowing is aimed at bridging the funding gap and ensuring the full implementation of government programmes and projects under the 2025 fiscal plan.

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt for further legislative input.

The committee is expected to report back to plenary in one week.(NAN)

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency over the nation’s security training facilities, citing their outdated conditions as a threat to the effectiveness of Nigeria’s internal security agencies. The development was confirmed by Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, who heads the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc committee tasked with revamping security training institutions. Governor Mbah made the disclosure during an on-site inspection of the facilities in Lagos.

Addressing newsmen, Mbah said, “What we’ve observed today is consistent with what President Tinubu recognized when he visited the council chamber on October 23 and personally approved the inauguration of this ad hoc committee tasked with overhauling all training institutions of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“The President recognized the urgent need for bold action to restore the pride, professionalism, and confidence of our men and women in the security sector. That is precisely what we are here to validate. This committee has a mandate to report back within 30 days.

“As you know, we divided ourselves into two teams. One team, led by His Excellency Abdullahi Sule, Governor of Nassarawa State, is visiting all the training institutions in the North, while we are currently visiting the institutions in the South. We also have consultants with us, who will conduct a deep assessment of what needs to be rebuilt, re-equipped, and sustained in these training institutions.

“The President indeed sees this as an emergency. What we aim to achieve is the creation of an intervention fund for the rebuilding, renovation, and re-equipping of these institutions. As you know, the President has approved the recruitment of 30,000 police officers, which cannot be effectively implemented without adequate training facilities. This is why we are treating it with the seriousness it deserves.

“This particular facility, for example, was built around 1948. As we consider redevelopment, are we also looking at digital transformation for police training? Absolutely. We cannot rely on 20th-century systems to train a 21st-century police force. Our personnel need to acquire evolving digital skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, mechatronics, and other technologies essential for modern policing.

“Our approach is a comprehensive revamp. As the President has emphasized, you cannot expect men and women responsible for protecting our communities and upholding law and order to be trained in inhumane conditions. That is simply unacceptable, and this initiative is aimed at addressing that.

“Lastly, for emphasis, I want to clarify that this action is not reactionary. Some viewers may think this is a response to the recent comments by former President Trump, but that is not the case. This directive was issued on October 20, before any external events. This is a forward-thinking, proactive initiative by a President who recognizes that our training institutions have suffered decades of neglect.

“Our goal is to rebuild these institutions, equip them with modern facilities, and provide world-class environments for our police officers and civil defence personnel. What you are witnessing is a nationwide effort to ensure that all training institutions are brought up to modern standards and aligned with 21st-century realities.

Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, alongside the committee’s secretary, former Inspector General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, who oversees the Special Protection Unit (SPU), stated that the committee has 30 days to submit a comprehensive report to the NEC, which will guide the next phase of reforms.
