In a strange development, foreign policy expert Dr Walid Phares has urged US President Donald Trump to establish an emergency base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, claiming that Port Harcourt is the main port city of the Biafra region.

He claimed that this was to deter Boko Haram and other jihadist groups in Nigeria and to stop their massacres of Christians and threats against moderate Muslims.

Phares, who also serves as Co-Secretary General of the Transatlantic Parliamentary Group, in a post on his X handle on Sunday, claimed that such a move would enable the rapid deployment of international humanitarian aid, especially assistance from American churches.

DAILY POST reported that Trump last week designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern.

The US President cited what he described as ongoing violence against Christians and failure of the government to protect religious minorities.

However, the Nigerian government denied persecution of any religious groups in Nigeria.

On Saturday, Trump went ahead to threaten military action against Nigeria if nothing is done about the matter quickly.

He wrote: “To deter #BokoHaram and other jihadist groups in Nigeria—and to stop their massacres of Christians and threats against moderate Muslims— I advise the #Trump administration to establish an emergency base in #PortHarcourt, the main port city of the #Biafra region.

“Such a move would enable the rapid deployment of international humanitarian aid, particularly assistance from American churches. President @realDonaldTrump has issued two strong statements condemning the jihadist attacks on Nigerian Christian communities and has directed the Secretary of War to prepare contingency plans for the “protection of communities” in Nigeria, should the federal government fail to stop the jihadists—as has been the case for years in northern and central Nigeria. In the meantime, targeted strikes against jihadist forces could also be considered.”

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, has urged victims and survivors to come forward with credible information to aid the ongoing investigation into an e-hailing driver accused of multiple cases of rape and assault in the state.

In a statement shared via its official X handle on Sunday, the agency confirmed that it is working closely with the Lagos State Police Command to strengthen evidence and ensure justice is served following the arrest of the suspect, identified as Adedayo Adegbola.

Commending the police for what it described as their “swift and diligent efforts” in apprehending the suspect, DSVA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the ongoing probe and ensuring that all survivors receive justice and protection.

“The agency is collaborating with the police to ensure justice is served and to expand the body of substantial evidence in the ongoing investigation. We are calling on other victims or survivors who may have been assaulted by the suspect to please come forward. All reports will be treated with strict confidentiality, and survivors will receive the necessary psychosocial and legal support,” the statement read.

According to police sources, Adegbola was apprehended by detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, following a series of viral online posts in which several women identified his photograph and accused him of sexual violence.

The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed on Saturday that the arrest followed a discreet investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Olohudare Jimoh.

Adebisi noted that preliminary findings link the suspect to multiple cases of rape, physical and indecent assault, and armed robbery involving female passengers.

Investigators also recovered a red Toyota Corolla, with registration number JJJ 226 HT, allegedly used by the suspect in the commission of the crimes.

Police authorities said Adegbola remains in custody while efforts are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and gather further evidence.

The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has faulted the United States government for placing Nigeria on its “Country of Particular Concern” list over alleged religious intolerance and violations of religious freedom.

The council, in a statement signed by its President, Sheikh AbdurRasheed Hadiyyatullah, described the U.S. decision as misleading, baseless, and an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Sheikh Hadiyyatullah said the move was part of a broader Western agenda to sow religious tension in the country, insisting that Nigeria remains a multi-religious nation where both Muslims and Christians practice their faiths freely.

 “There is no persecution of Christians in Nigeria as alleged. Terrorism and banditry affect all Nigerians, regardless of faith. Many victims of insurgency are Muslims,” the council stated.

The council expressed concern that the U.S. had failed to rely on credible local intelligence sources before reaching its conclusion, adding that such a designation could strain diplomatic relations between both nations.

“The United States should stop interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs under the guise of promoting religious freedom,” the statement added.

SCSN further called on the Nigerian government to reject and condemn the designation, describing it as an attempt to destabilize the country. It also urged the U.S. to focus on its own internal challenges, including gun violence and racial discrimination, rather than “lecturing other nations on human rights.”

The council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, unity, and mutual understanding among adherents of different faiths in Nigeria.

Alleged forgery charge: Human rights lawyer seeks CJN, DSS intervention

A lawyer and human rights activist, Victor Giwa, has called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, and and the Department of State Services, DSS, to investigate the veracity of his claims of alleged compromise in his trial before the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court.

Giwa is facing trial for alleged forgery before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie.

The lawyer had, however, asked the judge to refuse himself from the case, alleging compromise of the case by Asabe Waziri, a staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

In an affidavit attached to a motion on notice dated October 27, 2025, seeking the recusal of Justice Onwuegbuzie from his trial, Giwa said he has no chance of getting justice before the court.

Giwa, in the affidavit with motion number M/13799/205, averred that Asabe Waziri has the backing of some persons in the office of the FCT High Court CJ, with respect to the case.

The human rights lawyer said in the affidavit, “That I know as a fact that Asabe Waziri is fully supported by persons in the Office of the Chief Judge of FCT, and enjoys favour with respect to her cases in court.

“That I made efforts and sent emissaries to the Office of the Chief Judge with the knowledge that the Office of the Chef Judge is against me.

“That I have no chances of getting justice before this Honourable Court in this case as the outcome is pre-determined and Asabe Waziri has boasted repeatedly that this Honourable Court is arranged to obtain a conviction and use same as a basis for the withdrawal of my practice license.

“That I humbly and respectfully demand that this case be further investigated by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and Chief Justice of Nigeria, His Noble lord, Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

“That I am ready and available to undertake a polygraph test to verify the veracity of my claims and the facts deposed in this affidavit.

“That I know as a fact that during a time of settlement Asabe Waziri was represented by the Director of Enforcement Unit of the FCT High Court who demanded that the sum of Eight hundred million naira (N800, 000,000) be paid to Asabe Waziri should my client and I intend to stop our arraignment before His Lordship Honourable Bature and to further meet with Joe Agi, SAN. A copy of the settlement demand list as written and presented in the handwriting of the said Director of Enforcement Unit of the FCT High Court is attached as Exhibit O.

“That Asabe Waziri enjoys full support from the Office of the Chief Judge of
the FCT High Court and its staff. That I depose to this affidavit in good faith believing the contents to be true
and correct and in accordance with the Oath Act 2004.”

The police had accused Giwa of forging the letterhead of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Chief Awa Kalu.

But Awa Kalu, in a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, formally distanced himself from the allegation of forgery and impersonation against Giwa and the co-accused person, Bukola Ibitade.

However, despite the letter, the police went ahead to press charges against Giwa and Ibitade.

Kalu, in the letter dated May 30, 2025, had said his letterhead was never forged and that he had not at anytime lodged any complaint to the police about forgery of his document.

He equally clarified that he neither filed a complaint nor reported Giwa for allegedly forging his firm’s letterhead.
