A former House of Representatives member, who represented the Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency, Hon. Linus Okorie, has said Nigeria’s unity is stained by systemic exclusion and ethnic profiling of the Igbos in the current dispensation.

He said the current scenario had provided nothing but discomfort to the millions of Nigerians facing hyperinflation, hunger, insecurity and unemployment.

He stated this during a meeting with journalists in Abakaliki, on Wednesday, wondering about the infrastructural imbalance of over N2 trillion in the South-West as against N446 billion in the South-East, among others.

He said the nation’s unity was being severely tested by systemic exclusion, economic targeting, and a growing pattern of ethnic intimidation against the Igbo people.

In response to President Bola Tinubu’s anniversary address, Okorie stated that the administration’s abrupt cancellation of independence celebrations spoke louder than any presidential speech, serving as a silent admission of the profound hardship and discontent gripping the nation.

“While acknowledging the President’s recitation of economic metrics, I emphasize that these figures provide no comfort to the millions of Nigerians facing hyperinflation, hunger, insecurity and unemployment.

“This national hardship is compounded by a deliberate policy of systemic marginalization that undermines the very principles of federal character and inclusive governance,” he said.

He pointed to patterns in ministerial appointments where the South-East receives only the constitutional minimum representation, while single states in other regions boast multiple full cabinet-rank ministers.

“I, hereby, point out stark evidence of infrastructure discrimination, revealing that analysis of federal projects shows the South-West allocated N2.5 trillion for road construction compared to the South-East’s paltry N446 billion,” he added.

He highlighted how the South-East remained the only region completely excluded from the national gas pipeline infrastructure despite one of its component states, Imo, holding the largest gas reserve in Nigeria, deliberately stifling the region’s industrial potential.

“I also highlight the large-scale demolition at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex as a prime example of economic targeting, where on September 25, 2025, officials of the Lagos State Government, backed by heavy security, demolished at least 19 buildings, including a diagnostic center, a crèche, a mall, and offices, causing enormous financial losses and displacing hundreds of business owners, predominantly of Igbo origin.

“These demolitions were executed in a commando style, without the issuance of contravention notices and in blatant disregard for due process,” Okorie stated, emphasizing that the affected traders had lawful approvals from the Federalism Government through the Trade Fair Management Board, yet their investments were destroyed without warning.

“Beyond demolitions, I highlight the rising tide of ethnic profiling and intimidation in Lagos, which has created a climate of fear for Igbos,” he said.

He referenced the 2023 elections, where the U.S. Embassy noted “disturbing acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression” and the use of “ethnically charged rhetoric,” including a viral video where a prominent political figure warned Igbos to “stay at home” on election day if they would not vote for the APC.

Yobe Assembly confirms Yerima Lawan as Commissioner for Livestock Development

The Yobe State House of Assembly has confirmed Yerima Lawan Mahmud as Commissioner for the Ministry of Livestock Development.

The confirmation, which followed Governor Mai Mala Buni’s nomination, was carried out in line with Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Leading debate on the motion, the House Majority Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, explained that Mahmud, being a former lawmaker, was entitled to “floor privilege” under the standing rules of the Assembly. The privilege allowed him to take his oath of office without undergoing the usual screening questions.

Yusuf described the appointee as a man of integrity who had served Yobe State meritoriously in various capacities.
His portfolio is expected to boost the state’s livestock sector and enhance agricultural productivity through the newly created Ministry.

A group of wives of Nigerian soldiers currently in detention have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pardon their husbands and grant them a second chance to serve the country, stating that they be granted amnesty.
 
The group of more than 30 women and their young children gathered at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

Speaking on their behalf, Mrs. Rose Emmanuel David said many of the detained soldiers have been held for months, with some spending over a year at the 7 Division Military Police facility in Maiduguri. She explained that the situation has left families in hardship, forcing wives to take up menial jobs just to feed their children and pay school fees.

“Our husbands admit their mistakes and are willing to return with renewed loyalty to the Nigerian Army,” she said. 

“We are pleading with President Tinubu, the National Assembly, Governor Babagana Zulum, and all Nigerians of goodwill to support our call for mercy.”

The women argued that if amnesty can be extended to repentant Boko Haram members and bandits, then soldiers who once risked their lives defending the country should not be left without hope.

“These men once fought for peace and security. Showing them compassion will not only restore their dignity but also strengthen trust between soldiers and the nation they serve,” Mrs. David added.

Their appeal comes shortly after a Special Court Martial in Maiduguri convicted several personnel, including two senior non-commissioned officers, for offences such as arms racketeering and aiding the enemy.

The women expressed hope that the Independence Day season would inspire forgiveness and allow their husbands to be reunited with their families.

Strike: Osun JUSUN postpones ‘I Am Alive’ verification exercise

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Osun State, has revealed that the ‘I am Alive’ verification exercise for retired judiciary staff with federal shares will not hold as planned.

In a statement by the Osun JUSUN chairman, Comrade Idris Adedayo Adeniran on Thursday, after a state executive council meeting, the verification exercise had been postponed due to the ongoing strike by the union.

The verification exercise was scheduled to take place between Monday, October 6 and Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

The statement reads, “I’m Alive” Verification Exercise: We regret to inform relevant JUSUN members that the upcoming “I’m Alive” verification exercise for retired Judiciary Staff with federal shares, scheduled for Monday, October 6, and Tuesday, October 7, 2025, will not hold as planned due to our ongoing strike action.

“We urge the Honorable Chief Registrar to notify the officers expected from Abuja to refrain from attending.”

The statement also revealed that preparations for the 2026 budget were underway, with the council granting autonomy to the budget committees of the High Court, Customary Court of Appeal, and Judicial Service Commission.

The union also directed that no member should enter their office during the strike period without permission.

“This is a significant step toward ensuring that our judicial sections are adequately represented and resourced.

“We hereby advise that no staff member should attempt to enter their office without explicit permission from JUSUN,” the statement read.

The directive, according to JUSUN, particularly affects staff working in the salary and accounts departments adding that this measure was necessary to ensure compliance and maintain discipline among members.

Adeniran cautioned against any form of financial transaction during the strike, saying, “In line with our industrial action, we have resolved that no financial transactions should occur.”

He warned against unauthorised withdrawals from the accounts of the High Court, Customary Court of Appeal, and Judicial Service Commission, adding that strict adherence to the directive was expected.

Lagos State Government has announced that strict enforcement of Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, lanes will resume on Eko Bridge and Odo Iya Alaro Link Bridge effective Monday, October 6, 2025.

The exercise, which had been temporarily suspended on July 2, was put on hold to ease traffic congestion during rehabilitation works on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge.

The bridge, a strategic connector between Ogudu and Ifako, underwent structural repairs on its expansion joints, leading to partial closures and prolonged traffic delays into Lagos Mainland.

In a statement on Wednesday, Tobi Idowu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Enforcement, explained that the enforcement aligns with the government’s broader traffic management strategy.

“Motorists are strongly advised to comply with this directive, as relevant agencies will strictly monitor and enforce adherence to the dedicated BRT corridors,” Idowu stated.

Officials had earlier described the suspension as a “transitional and conditional” measure aimed at reducing commuter stress during the repair period.

Also confirming the development on X (formerly Twitter), Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, wrote:

“Now that the Ogudu Bridge repairs have been fully completed and reopened, enforcement of BRT lanes on both Eko Bridge and Odo Iya Alaro will resume on Monday, October 6, 2025.”

DAILY POST reports that Ogudu–Ifako Bridge, which was reopened on Tuesday, was delivered in 78 days, well ahead of the 101-day timeline originally scheduled for the project.

A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has urged the administration of Bola Tinubu to accord some credit to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, for the completion of the National Arts Theatre, Igamu.

The federal government had in July 2024 renamed the National Art Theatre after literary icon, Wole Soyinka.

Sani, however, pointed out that two Nigerians deserve mention – former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Emefiele.

“The renaming of the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu to The Wole Soyinka Centre for Arts and creative Arts is commendable,” he wrote on X.

“Credit should be given to Obasanjo for building the edifice for the Festac 77 and appreciation to Mr Godwin Emefiele for mobilising the Bankers committee to renovate it back to life after decades of neglect,” the former Kaduna lawmaker added.

President Bola Tinubu had in July 2024 renamed the theatre ‘Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts’ in honour of Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, a guest of honour at the event.

Tinubu, speaking on Wednesday during the commissioning of the edifice, said the rebirth of the theatre would strengthen the promotion of arts, culture and the creative economy in the country.

He said it was renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in recognition of the laureate’s contributions to literature, freedom and nation-building.
