Kogi Offers Access to 76,000 Enrollees in Health Insurance Scheme

Kogi State Government has flagged off the Health Insurance intervention and the access to care to over 76,000 enrollees, the distribution of equipment, andthe the distribution of 62,000 direct solar refrigerators by the Kogi State Primary Healthcare Development.
The flag-off ceremony which took place yesterday at the Government House in Lokoja was spearheaded by the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KSPHDA), and the coordinating State Ministry of Health.
The Governor, Usman Ododo, explained that his administration is committed to the welfare of the people of the state, noting that that was why the state government upgraded all the Primary Healthcare Centres to bring quality healthcare service delivery to the doorsteps of the people in rural areas.
The governor, during the flag-off, also gave an assurance that his administration would not relent in providing opportunities that would guarantee citizens’ access to quality healthcare.
He said that Kogi State is proud to join the global health insurance scheme o protect the health of the poor, as he admonished citizens to avail themselves of the opportunity by registering now as individuals, families, and groups with the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency.
Ododo further announced that “pensioners earning below N50,000 would enjoy free health insurance, while those receiving above N50,000 monthly will contribute N650 and those earning N100,000 and above will make insurance contribution of N1,250 to ease their burden.
According to him, the present administration has ordered the commencement the the of training of doctors in the MBBS programme at Prince Abubakar Audu University, PAAU, Anyigba, which was hitherto stalled 12 years ago.
In order to also encourage medical doctors in the state, the present administration has commenced the construction of doctors’ lodges at PAAU and CUSTECH in Anyigba and Osara respectively.
The Executive Director of Kogi State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Aledare Adekunle, has commended the vision the immediate past Governor, Yahaya Bello, for the establishment Kogi State Health Insurance in the state
Aledare also lauded the present state Governor, Usman Ododo, for both political and financial commitments to healthcare service delivery in the state.
He stated that a total of 28,056 enrollees under the public sector employee for local government civil servants; 3,427 enrollees pensioners are on contributory health plan, and 44,760 students under the TISHIP programme would benefit from the health insurance scheme.

The Liaison Director for MDAs and Security Agencies in Plateau State, Hon. Ziphion Chrysanthus, has stated that Nigeria’s centralised security system has failed to address the country’s growing and localised security challenges. He, therefore, stressed the need for the creation of state police.
Chrysanthus, in a statement issued yesterday, argued that rejecting state policing out of fear of abuse by governors is tantamount to denying Nigerians the prospect of safer communities.
His remarks came in response to the rejection of the idea of establishing state police forces by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, who represents Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
“The claim that state police could be abused is an argument that serves the comfort of the elite, notinterestserest of the people. Security cannot be micromanaged from Abuja. It must be localised, responsive, and community-driven,” he said.
According to him, establishing state police would ensure quicker response time, stronger local intelligence, and the deployment of officers familiar with the cultural and geographical contexts of their communities.
Chrysanthus stressed that concerns of abuse can be tackled through robust checks and balances, similar to accountability mechanisms in federal institutions.
He urged the National Assembly, the presidency, and stakeholders to move swiftly and decisively toward creating state policing structures, describing it as both a smart policy and a moral necessity.
“Security is not a privilege reserved for the elite, nor is it an ornament of political status to be paraded around election seasons. Security is a right, a non-negotiable, fundamental right of every Nigerian citizen,” he added.

An economist and Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane, has said that Nigeria cannot sustain 36 states at present.
Rewane made this statement on Wednesday while responding to questions in an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
He argued that Nigeria spends excessively on administration.
“Nigeria cannot afford to have 36 states. It’s unviable. We spend too much money administering.
“This country is twice the size of California in terms of geographical space, and the number of people administering this country in terms of 774 local governments, 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Managing what?” he stated.
Speaking further, Rewane said: “Take for instance, the old Western region is now split into several states being managed by governors, commissioners, special assistants and the likes. I think you have to rethink to restructure, whether you will go back to regionalism or not.”

Agencies of the Federal Government have said that synergy remains one of the panaceas to improving emergency response in Nigeria.
The agencies made this known on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, convened to chart a way forward towards developing a robust emergency response whenever the need arises.
DAILY POST reports that the meeting featured representatives from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Federal Fire Service, FFS, and the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme, NEMSAS.
The meeting was convened by the Frederick Emergency Response Support Initiative, FREER, a non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing emergency response efforts, particularly in cases such as road accidents, fire outbreaks, flooding, and other disaster scenarios.
McFredericks Akor Edache, Country Director of FREER, stressed the importance of collaboration among emergency response agencies to effectively mitigate the impacts of disasters.
He assured attendees that FREER aims to support and strengthen existing emergency frameworks rather than replace them.
FFS and FRSC subsequently pledged to train FREER staff to better equip them for emergencies.
