He said, “Between 1951 and 1959 when you had the first indigenous ruling in the country, the politicians during the First Republic, even the Second Republic, the political parties that were set up, were largely ideological.

“They knew what they wanted and were competing among themselves. They were acquiring power with responsibilities.

An economist and Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane, has said that Nigeria cannot sustain 36 states at present.

Rewane made this statement on Wednesday while responding to questions in an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

He argued that Nigeria spends excessively on administration.

“Nigeria cannot afford to have 36 states. It’s unviable. We spend too much money administering.

“This country is twice the size of California in terms of geographical space, and the number of people administering this country in terms of 774 local governments, 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Managing what?” he stated.

Speaking further, Rewane said: “Take for instance, the old Western region is now split into several states being managed by governors, commissioners, special assistants and the likes. I think you have to rethink to restructure, whether you will go back to regionalism or not.”

Agencies of the Federal Government have said that synergy remains one of the panaceas to improving emergency response in Nigeria.

The agencies made this known on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, convened to chart a way forward towards developing a robust emergency response whenever the need arises.

DAILY POST reports that the meeting featured representatives from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Federal Fire Service, FFS, and the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme, NEMSAS.

The meeting was convened by the Frederick Emergency Response Support Initiative, FREER, a non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing emergency response efforts, particularly in cases such as road accidents, fire outbreaks, flooding, and other disaster scenarios.

McFredericks Akor Edache, Country Director of FREER, stressed the importance of collaboration among emergency response agencies to effectively mitigate the impacts of disasters.

He assured attendees that FREER aims to support and strengthen existing emergency frameworks rather than replace them.

FFS and FRSC subsequently pledged to train FREER staff to better equip them for emergencies.

The Kaduna State Police Command has announced that it has concluded arrangements for the enforcement of Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Regulations, in line with extant laws and directives.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, DSP Mansir Hassan, Public Relations Officer of the Kaduna State Police Command, said the enforcement would commence on Thursday, October 2, 2025. He advised all vehicle owners and drivers whose vehicles are either factory-fitted or non-factory-fitted tinted glasses to ensure compliance by registering and obtaining the requisite permit to avoid inconvenience with law enforcement officers.

The statement further advised motorists to complete either online registration or physical registration by providing the following vehicle particulars, proof of ownership, and tinted glass specifications.

It urged members of the public to cooperate fully with the directive, stressing that the exercise is aimed at enhancing public safety and security across the state.

According to the statement, non-compliance will attract the necessary sanctions as provided by law.

The Police Command assured law-abiding citizens of its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment, while soliciting continuous support and cooperation from all stakeholders.

The federal lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Busayo Oluwole Oke, has called for the scrapping of state governments in Nigeria, insisting that they have become obstacles to grassroots development and are the major cause of insecurity and underdevelopment.

According to him, rural and local communities have been neglected for too long, leaving citizens in hardship.

Oke stated this on Wednesday in an interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, monitored by DAILY POST correspondent in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

He attributed the challenges of governance to the states, calling for reforms that would mirror the United Kingdom’s system, where multiple layers of local governments function effectively.

The lawmaker maintained that the absence of grassroots governance was fuelling insecurity across the country.

He said, “We need to feel the impact of the government at local levels, the state should go. The state is the problem. I’ve gone round the world and here in Nigeria, the people at the rural level are suffering.

“The insecurity happening in Nigeria today is because there’s no government at the local government level and President Bola Tinubu has taken the bull by the horn with the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. That judgment should be implemented and respected.”

According to him, key federal institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, have already complied with Supreme Court rulings, ensuring that allocations now go directly to local councils.

Speaking on Osun State, Oke accused the state government of political manipulation and mismanagement of funds, adding that instead of fostering development, the state had engaged in propaganda against federal officials.

“Osun State government has been all over the place, blackmailing President, blackmailing Attorney General, blackmailing Minister of Arms, blackmailing CBN, blackmailing the former governor of the state. Osun has been a scam. Ask the traditional rulers in Osun State the last time they got what is due to them. They don’t get their 5 per cent,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, Oke highlighted the need for immediate constitutional amendments and pointed out that Nigeria has not held a population census since 2006, which makes planning and representation less effective.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has published the official sub-national GDP figures for Kano State, showing strong economic growth between 2019 and 2023.

According to the report, “Kano State’s GDP rose from ₦10.7 trillion in 2019 to ₦16.8 trillion in 2023.”

In a statement, Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Ph.D., the Statistician-General of Kano State, stressed that the Bureau remains committed to “supporting data-driven governance, which remains one of the top priorities of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba K Yusuf.”

The statement added that Agriculture played a steady role in driving this expansion, moving from ₦3.2trn to ₦5.4trn within the same period. The industrial sector also grew, though at a slower pace, rising from ₦1.7trn to ₦2.4trn.

The services sector made the biggest leap, climbing from ₦5.8 trillion in 2019 to ₦9.0 trillion in 2023, making it the single largest contributor to Kano’s economy.

The NBS noted that the exercise began in March 2025 in partnership with state statistical agencies, and the final results have now been shared with the Kano State Bureau of Statistics.

To further examine the findings, the Bureau has set up a technical committee of experts. The members include: Dr. Tijjani Ahmad – Federal Polytechnic, Kazaure, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Abdullahi – Economics Department, Bayero University Kano, Dr. Yakubu Al-Amin (Yakson Al-amin Usman) – Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Hamisu Sadi Ali – Director General and Kano PDMO, Nazir Halliru – Director General, KAN-INVEST.

The Bureau said committee members will be officially informed of their roles.
