A group from the southeast region of Nigeria, under the umbrella of Igbo National Union Worldwide, INU-W, has demanded a fair trial in the case of terrorism charges leveled against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government.

The group told the Nigerian Government to set sentiments aside and discard what it termed fabricated evidence against Kanu but be just in the terrorism charges leveled against the embattled IPOB leader.

INU-W made the call through its Admin Secretary, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, in a press statement he signed and issued to the media recently, condemning what he called unnecessary delay in the case.

“It was a disheartening scenario on 26 September 2025 when the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Omotosho struck out the ‘no case submission’ brought by the legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to the consternation of people with good conscience all over the world.

By striking out the application of no case submission, the Nigerian Government at the centre and her security agencies had showcased their bias and intent over the trial of MNK who was illegally renditioned from Kenya in June 2021,” he stated.

The INU-W Secretary hinted that it is mind-boggling that while MNK is being prosecuted and persecuted, Sunday Igboho, who was also charged with terrorism, is walking free, and the notorious bandit and terrorist, Bello Turji, wrecking unprecedented havoc in the northern part of the country, is yet to be apprehended.

The group, in the press statement, asserted that the case of Mazi Kanu can be likened to ethnic coloration despite several calls and advice for his unconditional release from the DSS facility.

“The Federal Government should have a rethink and do the needful before this legal shenanigan snowballs into an ill wind that may shake the already shaky unity of the country.

Igbo National Union Worldwide once again urges for a fair and just trial for Kanu since the Nigerian Government has decided he has a case to answer,” the release further stated.

The group, however, enjoined people with good conscience and most especially members of IPOB and Ndigbo in particular to exercise restraint and never allow anyone, group, or association to push, cajole, or pressure them into embarking on any protest, demonstration, or rally against the long legal trial.

“It will be counterproductive and also another ploy to jeopardize the works of MNK’s legal team led by Kanu Agabi, SAN. It could also be another excuse to get at Igbo youths by the security agencies. This time calls for a sober reflection by Ndigbo on who we are, our existence, and survival in Nigeria,” the release added.

A coalition of rights activists has slammed President Bola Tinubu over his Independence Day broadcast, accusing him of making a reckless and prejudicial comparison between the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Boko Haram terrorist group.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, the Advocates for Victims of Injustice and Discrimination, AVID, and Rising Sun Ambassadors for Self-Determination condemned Tinubu’s action, noting that the President’s comments are sub judice as a suit challenging IPOB’s designation as a terror organization by the Nigerian government is pending before the Supreme Court.

The rights activists described Tinubu’s comments as an attempt to influence the outcome of the pending suit by poisoning the atmosphere against IPOB.

Parts of the statement read, “We, the undersigned organizations, strongly condemn President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reckless remarks equating IPOB with Boko Haram. It is deeply unfortunate that a sitting President would make such a false, inflammatory, and prejudicial statement while IPOB’s appeal is pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria and while Mazi Nnamdi Kanu battles for his life before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court.

“This utterance is not only sub judice, but a blatant attempt to poison the atmosphere of justice, intimidate the judiciary, and prejudice ongoing proceedings. It reflects a continuation of the ethnic persecution relay that has characterized Kanu’s ordeal, from Fulani domination under Buhari to Tinubu.

Rather than obsessing over IPOB, a non-violent self-determination movement, Tinubu should direct his energy towards Fulani terrorists and bandits who are ravaging Nigerian farmlands, displacing communities, and slaughtering citizens with impunity. It is shameful that while armed Fulani militias destroy the very fabric of Nigeria, Tinubu chooses to slander IPOB and persecute its leader for daring to demand justice for his people.

“We remind Tinubu and his cohorts that envy and jealousy of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s popularity among his people will never succeed in silencing him. If anything, every additional day of his illegal detention only magnifies his stature and makes him even more beloved by millions at home and abroad.

“History teaches us that the persecuted always outlive their persecutors. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu embodies the resilience of the Igbo nation. Just as the Eboe Landing martyrs chose honour over slavery, so too has Kanu chosen courage over submission.”

The activists further urged the United States and Canadian authorities to take action against Tinubu and the two Nigerian political parties All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“We call on the United States Congress and the U.S. Department of State to: Declassify and release President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s full records (immigration, criminal, financial, and educational) into the public domain in the interest of transparency, democracy, and accountability.

“We further call on the Government of Canada to: Gazette and enforce the Canadian court’s designation of APC and PDP as terrorist organizations, recognizing that these ruling parties have long sponsored electoral violence, militias, and terror against the Nigerian people,” the statement said.

The rights activists noted that APC and PDP are the real terrorist organizations and should be treated as such.

“It is a scandal of international proportions that peaceful IPOB is falsely labeled terrorist, while the real terrorist organizations the ruling political parties APC and PDP are treated with diplomatic legitimacy.

“We call on the international community to: Condemn Tinubu’s reckless and prejudicial utterances against IPOB. Demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has already been discharged and acquitted on jurisdictional grounds. Hold Nigeria’s ruling elites accountable for ethnic persecution disguised as national security.

“President Tinubu has only succeeded in proving one thing: the more he persecutes IPOB and detains Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the stronger and more popular both become. No prison walls, no courtroom manipulations, and no executive propaganda can extinguish the light of truth.

“Finally, a Canadian court designated both APC and PDP as terrorist groups in Nigeria.”

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has cautioned against the proposed amendments to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the planned sale of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s, NNPC, equity shares.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, gave the caution at a news conference on in Abuja in commemoration of the 65th independence anniversary of Nigeria.

He said that ADC believed that sales of NNPCL would not be a reform, but a disservice to Nigeria and Nigerians.

He recalled that on Sept. 22, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) sent a joint letter to President Bola Tinubu, rejecting the plans.

Abdullahi said that ADC fully aligned itself with the position of the unions, stating that if allowed to proceed, it would not only undermine Nigeria’s energy sovereignty but it would also amount to a brazen transfer of public assets into private hands.

He added that the actions would also dismantle institutional checks and balances and pave the way for the fire-sale of Nigeria’s most valuable national assets to private, politically connected interests at the expense of more than 200 million Nigerians.

“By handing over decisive control of these assets to private interests, the government weakens Nigeria’s ability to stabilise energy supply, respond to global oil shocks, or plan long-term energy strategies in the national interest.

“If we sell off our oil assets, we are not just parting with numbers on a balance sheet; we are surrendering the lifeblood of our economy and the backbone of our national sovereignty.

“It would mean that Nigeria, a country that once stood as a giant of energy in Africa, would wake up tomorrow without control over its own resources.

“It would mean that the revenues which fund our schools, hospitals, roads and pensions will flow into private pockets while our treasury runs dry.

“It would mean NNPC Limited, stripped off its most profitable holdings, will stagger under debt and obligations it can no longer meet, risking collapse and the loss of thousands of jobs.

“It would mean that our energy security, our ability to stabilise fuel supply, protect against global shocks and plan for the future will be handed to a few private entities whose only loyalty is to profit, not to the Nigerian people,” he said.

Abdullahi added that it would serve as a dangerous precedent, turning Nigeria’s commonwealth into private property, and leaving future generations of Nigerians with nothing but memories of what was once theirs.

He called on all stakeholders, including the civil society organisations, the National Assembly and organised labour unions to reject the plan.

Abdullahi urged labour unions, particularly those in the vital oil and gas sector, the youth to speak out and demand full transparency and accountability in the process.

He reaffirmed ADC’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s commonwealth, resisting corruption in all its forms and defending the economic rights of future generations.

While joining all Nigerians, at home and abroad, in reflecting and celebrating how far Nigerians had come as a people, he saluted the Nigerians who have kept faith with the Nigerian dream, even in the face of challenges.
