Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has urged Abia residents to call security agencies, or put up a call to him whenever they notice anything or movement that may threaten the security of the state.

Otti who made the call on Wednesday, during the celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence at the Government House Umuahia, said he keeps awake to ensure that Abia people can sleep without disturbance.

He said that Abia is blessed with Service Commanders who are hardworking in discharging their duties in security of the state, and thanked Abia people for believing in his administration.

“If you see something, say something, call the Nigeria police, the DSS, the Army, just call the security agencies or call me. We don’t sleep. And the reason we don’t sleep is so that you can sleep.

He also admonished the residents to maintain their support for security agencies, saying that it would further boost their morale and dedication to duty.

The Abia Governor encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope because of the economic challenges bedeviling the country but to keep striving for the better.

He further said that his State has witnessed transformation in development in the past 28 months since he assumed office.

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has struck out a suit filed by the Chairman and members of the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, who were appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara but later removed by the former Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas.

The claimants, Reverend Goodlife Iduoku Ben, Amadi Christian Echele, Chimenem Wisdom Jerome, and three others, had approached the court to challenge what they described as their unlawful removal and replacement with another chairman and members of the commission.

When the matter came up for judgment on Thursday, counsel to the claimants, Kelechi Ubani, informed the court of a notice of discontinuance filed at the request of his clients.

Ubani explained that his clients made what he called a “painful decision” to withdraw the suit in the interest of peace and progress in the state.

However, counsel to the 1st–12th defendants opposed the motion, urging the court to dismiss the case instead of striking it out.

In his ruling, presiding judge Justice Frank Onyiri dismissed the defendants’ objection, describing their motion as baseless.

Citing relevant legal authorities in support of the claimants’ application, Justice Onyiri struck out the suit under Order 25, Rule 1.

The court, however, declined to award costs or to dismiss the case as requested by the defendants, commending the claimants’ decision to withdraw the matter as “noble.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has dismissed claims that it rejected the resignation of Edison Ehie as a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Ehie, who became Chief of Staff to Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the height of the political crisis in the state, resigned from the Assembly to assume his new role.

He had previously represented Ahoada East Constituency II.

In recent days, social media posts, particularly on Facebook, alleged that INEC had said it rejected Ehie’s resignation, citing remarks attributed to the Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Prof. Gabriel Yomere, during an engagement with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee, IPAC.

The reports also claimed that INEC declined to initiate a bye-election to replace Ehie.

Reacting in a statement signed by Geraldine Ekelemu, Acting Head of Voter Education and Publicity at the Rivers State INEC office, the Commission clarified that the power to organize any election lies solely with its national headquarters.

INEC added that the conduct of a bye-election can only follow receipt of a formal notice from the appropriate constitutional authority.

The Commission stressed that it cannot, on its own, declare a legislative seat vacant.

It explained that the REC’s comments during the IPAC meeting were misconstrued as an official policy statement.

“Once it has been signed and transmitted by the authorized legislative authority and in this case, Rivers State House of Assembly, the Commission will commence the processes required to conduct a bye-election in line with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act,”the statement added.

The then Victor Oko-Jumbo faction of the State Assembly had earlier declared Ehie’s seat vacant following his resignation.

However, the Supreme Court later ruled that the Oko-Jumbo-led Assembly was illegal.

This development implies that Ehie remains a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

For his resignation to be valid, he would have to submit a fresh letter to the Assembly under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, which would then be transmitted to INEC for the conduct of a bye-election in Ahoada East Constituency II.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticised Governor Ademola Adeleke over the alleged extra-judicial killings of youths in Akinlalu, Ife North Local Government Area, by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps.

The party alleged that the state government had failed to address the killings, which occurred on September 30, the eve of Independence Day, and accused the governor of diverting public attention with claims over local government allocations.

In a statement signed by the Osun APC Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party said the people of Akinlalu were mourning the deaths of several young residents allegedly killed by Amotekun operatives.

According to the statement, the incident occurred when Amotekun operatives reportedly invaded Akinlalu community in retaliation for two pump-action guns allegedly snatched from their men by unknown persons.

Quoting the Osun State Police Command, the APC stated, “The members of the Western Security Network, also known as Amotekun, came in large numbers and invaded Akinlalu community with two official patrol and one private vehicle. During the invasion, they shot sporadically, causing serious bullet injuries on three persons.”

The police further confirmed that “three persons lost their lives during the shooting and their corpses were taken away by Amotekun operatives.”

The injured were identified as Adeagbo, 2-year-old Kadijat; 60-year-old Oke-Ila Oyebamiji; and 19-year-old Fayomi Toheeb.

Residents of Akinlalu reportedly denied claims by the Amotekun Corps that its operatives were ambushed by hoodlums, insisting that the town is peaceful and does not harbour criminals.

The APC, while expressing disappointment that Governor Adeleke had not taken action to ensure justice for the victims, alleged that the government instead mobilised its supporters to spread falsehoods about local government funds to divert attention from the killings.

The party said, “We are happy that the forged letter in circulation has failed to achieve its malicious intent, as informed members of the public are questioning its authenticity.”

It also accused the state government of diverting over ₦84 billion belonging to local governments, claiming that more than ₦60 billion had been spent on the Governor’s Office in the last three years.

The party further alleged that some key government officials had visited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, headquarters over contract scandals and mismanagement of TETFUND and UBEC funds.

According to Olabisi, the APC will continue to serve as a responsible opposition at the state level while focusing on providing good governance at the grassroots, following the Court of Appeal judgment of February 10, 2025, which reinstated APC local government chairmen and councillors.

“The PDP government in Osun should come to terms with the reality that it is now the opposition at the local government level, while our party remains committed to serving the people responsibly until the end of our officials’ tenure in 2028,” he concluded.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that three persons were confirmed dead following an ambush on operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps.

It was gathered in a statement by the Amotekun spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu Abass, that the operatives were ambushed while responding to a distress call from Akinlalu, a community in the Ile-Ife area of the state.

During the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the operatives engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the hoodlums.

However, on Wednesday, October 1, the Osun State Police Command announced that it had launched a full-scale investigation into the violent clash between operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, and residents of Akinlalu community.

In a statement by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and issued by the Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, the police disclosed that information obtained from one Chief Oyebamiji Kamorudeen of Akinlalu indicated that the invasion by Amotekun Osun personnel was reportedly a retaliatory operation following the alleged snatching of two pump-action guns from operatives by unidentified persons.

In response to the conflicting accounts, CP Ibrahim Gotan ordered that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Osogbo for a thorough and discreet investigation.
