The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Christopher Musa, says loss of family values is responsible for rising insecurity in Nigeria.

The defence chief declared that strengthening family values is crucial to addressing insecurity in Nigeria.

Musa stated this on Thursday at the closing of the 2025 edition of ‘Exercise Haske Biyu’ at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, AFCSC, in Jaji, Kaduna.

The exercise focused on family values, civic duties and moral resilience as core elements in security challenges facing Nigeria and other participating nations.

“The family is the bedrock of every community. Without the family, there can’t be a good community.

“What we have realised is that because the family system is failing, insecurity is growing, which means if we address the family issues, insecurity will go down,” he said.

Musa emphasized that families must instil discipline, respect and love in their wards, noting that these values shape responsible citizens.

A fake lawyer simply identified as U.T Oghenetejiri was on Thursday arrested at the Magistrate Court, Orhunwhorhun in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

The suspect, who appeared in a civil matter that was charged before the court, was apprehended by members of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Udu Branch’s Anti-Fake lawyer Committee, led by David Omage and G. Fenfe, after he failed respond to a question posed before him by the magistrate in the courtroom.

Instead, he took to his heels as court staff and lawyers chased him to the Orhuwhorun market where he was arrested.

It was revealed that Oghenetejiri had been frequenting courts in the area for several months, allegedly representing clients under the guise of being a qualified legal practitioner.

His inconsistent legal arguments and evasive answers about his law school background raised red flags.

NBA Udu Branch Chairman, Edmund Odohisi, Esq, said the association had received prior complaints about an individual impersonating a lawyer and had launched a quiet investigation.

“We took the matter seriously because the integrity of the legal profession is at stake,” Odohisi said.

“When he appeared again at Orhuwhorun court, our men moved in.”

After catching the suspect, Udu lawyers, with the assistance of court security, detained Oghenetejiri and handed him over to the police for further investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that he has been preparing legal documents, forged a stamp and seal and even has an office at Jakpa Road in Effurun.

Several copies of deed of transfer and other legal paraphernalia were in his possession at the time of arrest.

Checks revealed that the suspect never attended law school and is not enrolled in the roll of legal practitioners maintained by the Supreme Court of Nigeria — a mandatory requirement to practice law in the country.

The incident has sparked fresh concerns about regulatory oversight and the need for stricter verification mechanisms within Nigeria’s judicial system.

Legal practitioners across the state have applauded the swift action of the Udu NBA, calling for vigilance to protect the sanctity of the legal profession.

The Udu NBA has urged the public to report suspicious legal practitioners and reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and professional ethics.

As at press time, Oghenetejiri is cooling his heels at the Ovwian Police Station, pending his arraignment.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to honor his pledge to release the sum of N500 million to the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, in the 2024 fiscal year.

The lawmakers urged the governor to commence monthly subvention payments to the institution beginning January 2026, stressing that consistent funding is vital to sustaining its academic and administrative activities.

This resolution was reached following a motion sponsored by Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, representing Ibadan South West Constituency II and Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, and seconded by Hon. Babajide Adebayo of Ibadan North Constituency II.

Presenting the motion, Fowokanmi lamented that the university is grappling with gross underfunding, which has affected its infrastructure, staff welfare, and academic operations.

He noted that the institution currently survives on scholarships, internally generated revenue, and TETFUND support, which are inadequate to meet its growing needs.

He commended Governor Makinde for inaugurating the Governing Council of the university, describing the move as a significant step toward institutional stability.

However, he pointed out that the N500 million earlier announced by the state government in 2024 has yet to be disbursed.

The lawmaker explained that the school’s financial burden has further increased following the approval of the new minimum wage, forcing the management to resort to bank loans to pay staff and meet other obligations.

In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, approved Fowokanmi’s request mandating the Committee on Tertiary Education to interface with the management of the university.

According to Ogundoyin, the engagement will help audit the school’s accounts, internally generated revenue, and overall financial records, while also identifying other challenges confronting the institution.

He emphasized that the findings will guide the Assembly’s intervention and enable it to provide stronger legislative support for the university.
