NAFDAC Seals Off Two Chinese Supermarkets, Eight Cosmetic Shops in Abuja
* Confiscates goods worth N170m

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off two chinese supermarkets located in the Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market, Abuja, confiscating products worth over N170 million.
The agency also said that it has shut down eight cosmetics shops within Wuse Market for the sale of banned, expired and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs and aesthetic medicines.
In a statement on Friday signed by its Deputy Director of Public Relations/Protocol, Adegboyega Osiyemi, NAFDAC said: “Acting on the directive of the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the enforcement team confiscated and evacuated offending products worth over N170 million.”
It said the action was as a result of flagrant violation of extant laws governing the sale, distribution, and labelling of regulated products in Nigeria.
The statement said that the supermarkets situated on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi District, Abuja, were sealed off following credible consumer complaints and subsequent surveillance by NAFDAC Enforcement Team.
According to NAFDAC, its investigations revealed that the operators of the chinese supermarkets were engaged in the sale of unregistered food items and products labelled exclusively in chinese language, contrary to NAFDAC’s mandatory labelling policy requiring English translations for the Nigerian market and regulatory understanding.
“Despite initial resistance and denials by the foreign nationals at Ebitu Street that the supermarket is yet to commence operation, the enforcement team confirmed that the outlet was in full operation and selling unregistered regulated products,” it added.
According to NAFDAC, eight cosmetics shops within Wuse Market were sealed off by its enforcement team for the sale of banned, expired and unregistered cosmetics, aphrodisiacs and aesthetic medicines.
The agency said that certain individuals had been illegally presenting themselves, “as dermatologists and pharmacists, prescribing and selling harmful products to unsuspecting consumers under the guise of body enhancement, skin whitening, aesthetic improvement for ladies and manpower for men.
“Some of the cosmetics products seized include Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Boobs Enlargement, Curvy Weight Gain, Skin Whitening Vitamin Gummies, Collagen, Royal Jelly, Glutathone Whitening Gummies, White doll, Dr. Gallery Plus, Maiz Zaki Syrup, Original Herbal Yellow fever, Sickle Cell Medicine, Dr. Nafisa Herbal Medicine, Dynewell Syrup, White Blinks, and so on”.
While responding to the development, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, restated the agency’s mandate to protect the health of Nigerians against exposure to dangerous chemicals and toxic substances which are linked to serious health risks, including skin cancer, kidney damage, irritability and memory loss.
She said NAFDAC is committed to enforcing compliance with regulations and advised Nigerian consumers to patronize only products duly registered by NAFDAC.
She also urged foreign nationals and investors intending to import or market products in Nigeria to visit NAFDAC offices nationwide for product registration and regulatory guidance.
In addition, Adeyeye urged members of the public to report suspicious sales outlets or products to the nearest NAFDAC offices.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio challenging the legality of the six months suspension slammed on the Kogi Central Senator Natasha Uduaghan-Apoti over alleged misconduct.
The suit instituted by one Ovavu Illiyasu and nine others was thrown out by the Judge on ground that they have no locus standi (legal authority) to bring the matter before the court.
Marked FHC/ABJ/CS/654/2025, the suit challenged the validity of the suspension of Natasha Uduaghan-Apoti for various reasons.
Among others, the plaintiffs prayed the court to void the suspension of Natasha on the ground that their Senatorial District will ashortchanged recall with immediate effect.
Various grounds were advanced by the plaintiffs for their request for invalidation of the suspension, among which are that their Senatorial District would be shortchanged in the Senate.
In his judgment on Friday, Justice Omotosho held that the 10 plaintiffs lacked locus standi to Institute the action.
He subsequently dismissed their suit for want of merit.

Stakeholders in Bauchi State have renewed calls for tougher tobacco control measures, with emphasis on effective taxation, to shield citizens from the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke.
The demand was made during a training workshop on smoke-free policy implementation, organized by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC)
Speaking at the workshop, Solomon Adoga, representing CISLAC, described tobacco control as a pressing public health priority, reminding participants that Article 8 of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) obliges governments to protect citizens from exposure to tobacco smoke.
“Several countries have enforced smoke-free environments, but Nigeria is still lagging behind. Despite the National Tobacco Control Act (2015), weak enforcement means millions of Nigerians remain at risk from both direct and second-hand smoking,” Adoga said.
He noted that the Act provides for a National Tobacco Control Committee and other frameworks, but poor implementation undermines its effectiveness.
DAILYPOST reports that participants including civil society groups, NGOs, and media representatives—expressed concern about the growing health and social burden of tobacco use, stressing that smoke also endangers non-smokers in homes, workplaces, and public spaces.
They urged the Bauchi State Government to domesticate the national law by creating state-specific legislation and policies, while fostering inter-agency collaboration to ensure enforcement.
CISLAC also underscored the role of taxation in reducing consumption while providing sustainable government revenue.
“Tobacco taxation is a win-win: it discourages smoking, protects public health, and generates funds that can support healthcare and other critical services,” Adoga stated.

The number of persons who have died from Lassa fever in Nigeria has risen to 168, from 166, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, has disclosed.
The epidemiological report released by the NCDC on Friday, explained that from January 1 to September 21, the Case Fatality Rate now stands at 18.5 per cent, up from 16.9 per cent recorded during the same period in 2024.
The report said that as of epidemiological Week 38, Nigeria has reported a total of 7,792 suspected cases and 906 confirmed cases across 21 states and 106 Local Government Areas.
The World Health Organisation has explained that Lassa fever is an acute viral illness caused by the Lassa virus, lamenting that it is endemic in Benin, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone,
It noted that Lassa fever probably exists in other West African countries as well.
According to the global health body, “Lassa virus is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces. Person-to-person transmission can also occur, particularly in healthcare settings lacking adequate infection prevention and control measures.”
According to the NCDC, in Week 38, the number of new confirmed cases remained the same as in Week 37 of 2025, with 11 reported cases, saying that these were from Ondo, Edo, and Taraba States.
Cumulatively, the report stated that as of Week 38, 2025, 168 deaths have been reported with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.5 per cent, which is higher than the CFR for the same period in 2024 (16.9 per cent).
In total for 2025, the report explained that 21 states have recorded at least one confirmed case across 106 Local Government Areas.
It said that a significant majority—90 per cent—of confirmed cases were reported from five states, such as Ondo (33 per cent), Bauchi (23 per cent), Edo (18 per cent), Taraba (13 per cent), and Ebonyi (three per cent), while the remaining 10 per cent were spread across 16 other states.
It noted that the predominant age group affected is 21–30 years (range: 1–96 years; median age: 30 years) as the male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases is 1:0.8.
The report explained that no new healthcare workers were affected during the reporting week, and the number of suspected and confirmed cases has decreased compared to the same period in 2024.
The NCDC’s multi-partner, multi-sectoral Technical Working Group continues to coordinate response activities at all levels.
