A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. George Agbakahi has concluded that ascendency to the presidency of the country by Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the time he did saved the nation’s economy and democracy from total collapse.
Agbakahi, who is the South East leader of Tinubu Support Organization and member of 2023 Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Media and Publicity Directorate, made the assertion during a Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) current affairs programme on Thursday, tagged “Nigeria Today”, to mark the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary, monitored in Abuja by our reporter.
While x-raying the nation’s democratic journey so far, the APC Chieftain acknowledged the turbulent civil war, the disruptive military regimes and the return to democracy since 1999 as well as the attendant economic challenges since then.
He described the Independence Day speech of President Tinubu as “compelling and inspiring especially as he acknowledged the role the founding fathers played in Nigerian history particularly during the independence era; people like Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa and so on and so forth.”
The APC chieftain stated that the founding fathers played a huge role in building the country before the civil war between 1967 to 1970 after which there was a long period of military dictatorship which however ended in 1979 and came back again in 1984 before the nation came to democracy in 1999 that was the Fourth Republic.
Agbakahi stated that the nation’s economy and by extension democracy was heading to the doom when President Tinubu came on board in 2023 and introduced far-reaching policies and programmes to halt the downward slide.
“Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came into office barely two years ago, I believe he has done a whole lot to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.
“He indicated from the very beginning that it was not going to be easy, particularly when he extricated the fuel subsidy and unified the foreign exchange rate. He indicated that it wasn’t going to be easy.
“However, in the past year things are changing, things are getting better. We all know that inflation has come down considerably to 20.12 percent.
“We also know that foreign reserve has gone up considerably to about $42.3 billion dollars. A lot has been done; there has been a lot of internally generated revenue that goes to the FIRS.
“In 2024 they generated N21.6 trillion as opposed to below N11 trillion in 2023. Look at the Nigerian Custom Service who generated N6.1 trillion as opposed to about N3.2 trillion before President Tinubu came into office; the same thing with other internally generating agencies. So the president has done a whole lot.”
Agbakahi, however, stressed that like President Tinubu indicated in his speech, there was a lot to be done and Nigerians were hopeful that eventually the economy will start getting better and better.
Speaking about the state of the economy before the intervention of President Tinubu, Dr. Agbakahi stated that “The hallmark of this administration’s economic policy truly is the unification of the exchange rate and it is quite obvious that since 1999 all successive governments, they all knew that it was a bad policy having multiple exchange rate, it was a policy that was predicated on corruption.
“Everybody knew that; Obasanjo’s regime, Yar’Adua, Goodluck regime, they all knew that, even to the extent that a well known business man Femi Otedola made a commentary recently that about N2 trillion was corruptly spent on fuel subsidies…”
He stated that in the past the nation’s currency, the Naira, was fast losing value, even as it was being fluctuated by the Central Bank and not by market forces.
“Now we have the real thing, that’s why even though one Dollar is exchanging at N1500 or thereabout, it still has more weight than when it was N800 per Dollar.
“And that’s why you see there is a trade surplus in this country. Just this last September our trade surplus reached about N7.46 trillion, that’s a step in the right direction. Our GDP grew N4.32 percent, that’s a step in the right direction.
“Before President Tinubu came on board, crude oil production was below one million barrels per day, but now we are talking about 1.7 million barrels.
“So the government has done a whole lot and this is done through kinetic and non kinetic means; the Niger Delta area is becoming quiet that’s why we are able to produce as much oil during this administration unlike in the past.”
The APC Chieftain stressed the importance of Nigerians looking back at where the country was coming from before President Tinubu came on board.
“The economy was bleeding, he was able to enact very bold and tough decisions which has brought us to where we are today and he showed empathy acknowledging the pains of Nigerians.
“We are really getting to the point that things have started getting better and definitely I want to urge all Nigerians to search your conscience at this point in time and reach out to one another and rededicate ourselves anew to the democratic ideals of peace, tolerance, peace mutual respect to rule of law, let us come together and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he appealed to Nigerians.

He spoke while flagging off the construction of the Transit Way, N2, connecting the Central Area to Wuse District with two bridges.
Wike said: “I told you that when you are doing your work, people may hate you. All those who hate us are using the road, all those who hate us will use the water, they will use the street light.
“So it’s an opportunity to improvise for them, you don’t need to worry yourselves, they are just looking for an opportunity to come closer to us and because we are very strict, the only way they can come closer to us is to blackmail us; unfortunately we don’t know the meaning, there is no blackmail in our dictionary.
“The only thing that we know in our dictionary is to work to the satisfaction of our people.”
The minister also threatened to facilitate the redeployment of the FCT Mandate Secretary on Security over his inability to provide him with updates on the construction of 12 police stations across the capital city.
Wike warned: “Director of Security, we have built not less than 12 police stations and up till now, you have not come to tell me how many are ready.
“The day I go and find out, that is the day that you will go to the Institute of Policy Studies so that you will allow another person to do the job.
“Being director is not to wear Agbada and black cap, your assignment is to see that you handover the police stations so that we have improved security.
“So my dear brothers and sisters, it has not been easy. This flag off will continue till the 20th of October and then from November we will start to commission some other projects which we think are very vital and will grow the economy of the FCT and improve the landscape of the FCT.”

Wike said, “We are going to start again the total rehabilitation of not less than 40 schools after this road projects and that will add to not less than 70 schools that are ongoing with almost 45 completed and well furnished.
“And I said we will begin to look into the issue of health. We believe those in charge of health must sit up to know that time waits for nobody, if you don’t know how to meet up, go and ask those who know how to meet up with the speed that I work with.
“Go and meet the ES of FCDA, go and meet the Coordinator of FCDA and they will tell you how to meet up with me because its very key, like I said, no sector will be left. By the directive of Mr President, every sector must be touched and its for those of you in charge to will kick start it and let us believe that you are serious.”

As part of its efforts to improve voter turnout in Nigeria, the House of Representatives has proposed same-day elections for presidential, governorship and legislative offices.
Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, made the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday.
Speaking while receiving the European Union, EU, delegation, Abbas explained that the proposal is part of the wider electoral reforms under review.
He said, “Like the single-day election, it is to hold the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state assembly membership elections on the same day to help reduce our electoral process, particularly on the turnout of voters.
“We will do the needful to make sure that INEC has all the necessary tools and provisions to make 2027 election better than 2023 election.”
He however urged the European Union to support advocacy and awareness efforts.

The people of Ugborodo Community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State have given a seven-day ultimatum to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), now operating under the name Renaissance, as well as NPDC, SEPLAT, NGIC, NPSL, Mobil Offshore, and other international oil companies (IOCs), demanding the immediate incorporation and operationalisation of their Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs) across onshore, offshore, and deep offshore assets, in their domain.
The community is also host to multi-billion Dollars Escravos Gas to Liquid Project (EGTL) operated by Chevron Nigeria Limited in Warri South West LGA of Delta State.
Speaking at a tripartite press conference held yesterday at Ode-Ugborodo, the community’s global headquarters, the Ugborodo Community Management Committee (UCMC), IkpereAlemeje Women Traders Association, and the Ugborodo Community Youth Development Body (UCYDB), jointly accused the oil multinationals and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) of deliberate neglect, disrespect, and exploitation of host communities in violation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the Host Community Development Regulations.
The community leaders, who spoke through Mr. Emmanuel Onuwaje (UCMC Chairman), Madam Helen O. Nuco (Women Traders Chairlady), and Mr. Wilson Ejeh (UCYDB Chairman), alleged that despite decades of oil exploration and billions of dollars generated from their land, Ugborodo people were left without potable water, electricity, employment, or meaningful youth empowerment opportunities.
They further accused Chevron and Renaissance of systematically sidelining qualified indigenes in employment processes but instead importing “relatives and friends from other parts of the country” to occupy jobs and contracts meant for host communities.
On the delay in implementing the NBC/NUPRC joint report on communities within the 500-metre buffer zone of the Escravos coastlines, the groups accused the Commission of stalling the implementation, thereby frustrating Ugborodo’s recognition as a statutory host community and preventing the establishment of HCDTs.
The Committee’s Secretary, Samuel Besidone, who read the statement, said “We are tired of waiting. If nothing is done within seven days, we will be forced to stop all operations by International Oil Companies in our land.
“Our people are tired of being ignored. NUPRC must recognise us and set up our HCDT without delay,” they warned.
They stated that the patience of their people could not remain indefinite, warning that failure of IOCs, NUPRC, and relevant agencies to act within seven days will leave them with no option but to put a complete stop to all International Oil Companies’ operations within their communities adding “Enough is enough.”
They condemned vehemently recent attempts by some elements to destabilise the community’s peace and unity, including the formation of a “Governing Council of Ugborodo Community Trust” by unauthorised individuals.
The community leaders accused the groups of trying to incite violence and undermine the authority of recognised community organs.
Specifically, the leaders condemned the recent attempt by a “group of self-exiled individuals” to set up a parallel governing council for Ugborodo at a hotel in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area, far from the community.
They accused one of the group’s backers, allegedly a state government appointee, of plotting to destabiliseUgborodo and warned of potential conflict if any external force attempted to enforce the illegitimate council.
“We will resist any effort to invade our land in the name of government-backed deception. Our peace and unity are non-negotiable,” the community leaders stated.
The said further “You may be aware that some jokers recently converged somewhere at Ajamimogha, in faraway Warri South LGA, constituted nuisance and deluded themselves with the laughable and dead-on-arrival act of constituting a so-called ‘Governing Council of Ugborodo Community Trust.’
“Some of the mass media organisationswho covered the unholy convergence far away from any part of Ugborodo Community allowed their media to be used to tell lies that the said unholy convergence was at Ugborodo Community!
“What could be more deceptive, with a part of the media organisations as accomplice! These set of self-exilees have no doubt completely lost touch with the realities on the ground in Ugborodo Community.
“The known administrative organs set up and authorised by the appropriate authorities in Ugborodo Community are the UCMC under the leadership of Mr. Emmanuel Onuwaje, IkpereAlemeje Women Traders Association led by Madam Helen O. Nuco and the UCYDB under the leadership of Mr. Wilson Ejeh.
“The executives and members of these tripartite vital organs are seated here with us at Ode-Ugborodo, headquarters of Ugborodo Community. I leave you to be the judge.
“Though we are not in any way perturbed by the shenanigans of these self-exilee characters, we are nonetheless disturbed by the potential threat of their unpatriotic acts to the current security, peace and unity in Ugborodo Community, particularly when one of their sponsors is an appointee of the Delta State Governor, with the title/office ‘DG Security.’ Be that as it may, we are on the ground and at alert”, they added.
The community leaders vowed to resist any person or group of persons who were bent on destabilising their community adding ‘Governments at all levels should please take note as we are aware of his antics to invade the community with armed military personnel”.
