Gov Sani releases N2.3bn for retirees, families of deceased workers

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has approved the release of N2.321 billion for the settlement of pension entitlements, gratuities and death benefits to retirees and families of deceased civil servants across the state. The disbursement covers Accrued Rights under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and Gratuity/Death Benefits under the old Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has approved the release of N2.321 billion for the settlement of pension entitlements, gratuities and death benefits to retirees and families of deceased civil servants across the state.

The disbursement covers Accrued Rights under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and Gratuity/Death Benefits under the old Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

With the payment, Kaduna State has now paid out N6.678bn in 2025 and a total of N13.5bn in the last two years of the present administration.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, in a statement, noted that the welfare of pensioners remained a top priority of the government, stressing that regular and timely payments will continue to ease the hardship of senior citizens.

According to the Executive Secretary, Ibrahim Balarabe –  Kaduna State Pension Bureau, the latest batch would benefit 661 retirees and families across State and Local Governments with N1.736bn for Accrued Rights of 511 retirees under the CPS, and N585m for Gratuities and Death Benefits to 315 pensioners and next-of-kin under the DBS.

The Bureau further explained that for those under the Contributory Pension Scheme, their Accrued Rights would be credited directly into their Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) with their respective Pension Fund Administrators, while pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme will soon be invited for screening and verification before payment.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, says it is time for African youths to rise and demand good leadership from those in authority.

Speaking at the Ubuntu Africa Youth Assembly Series organised by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) under the theme “Ethical Leadership and Empowering Youth”, Obi described Africa’s youthful population, estimated at about 400 million, as the greatest asset in the continent.

The virtual forum, held on Sunday, was part of the African Renaissance Initiative designed to promote intergenerational dialogue, strengthen ethical leadership, and inspire young Africans to contribute meaningfully to governance and nation-building.

Obi warned that any society that neglects or despises its young people is doomed to woefully fail.

Citing the Ubuntu philosophy, he stressed the need for Africans to embrace collective growth and mutual support, saying, “I am because you are”.

He said Ubuntu is one of Africa’s oldest philosophical thoughts that highlights the importance of community values and shared humanity.

The former Anambra State Governor expressed concern at the continued decline of African economies despite abundant natural and human resources, stressing that most leaders had failed to learn from countries that had achieved sustainable growth.

The ex-presidential candidate urged African leaders to adopt workable models from other nations and implement policies that promote productivity, inclusivity, and good governance among its populace.

According to him, governments across the continent must deliberately invest in health, education, and poverty reduction through entrepreneurship, citing countries like China and Indonesia that have achieved economic growth by prioritising human capital development through small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

Obi said, “nations are measured by the quality of their human capital, selfishness and corruption have continued to kill entrepreneurship and impoverish Africa.

“The Ubuntu philosophy is about building a better humanity where no one is afraid of the success of others.”

He rejected the notion that his candid assessments amount to demarketing Africa, insisting that his views are driven by the conviction that only compassionate, honest, and character-driven leadership can move the continent forward.

According to him, “African youths need encouragement and support to pursue their dreams, just as the economies of China, the United States, and Indonesia thrive largely because of their young and productive populations.”

Obi explained that smaller countries like the Netherlands can export food despite having limited arable land, whereas Africa remains unable to feed itself due to poor leadership and mismanagement.

He believed that Africa’s greatest challenge is not natural disaster but leadership failure that continues to impede the continent’s growth and development.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Rev. Fr. Canice Chinyeaka Enyiaka, Director of African Peace Initiative and Engagement at the Global Peace Foundation and anchor of the session, reaffirmed the relevance of the Ubuntu philosophy to Africa’s moral and social transformation.

The Nigerian Army has denied reports claiming that bandits attacked its troops in Obanla, Kwara State, and made away with guns and ammunition.

In a statement on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 2 Division, described the report as false and misleading.

He said the story, which alleged that troops were overrun and six General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and over 30,000 rounds of ammunition were stolen, was a fabrication meant to mislead the public and dampen troop morale.

“At no time were Army positions overrun, nor was any cache of weapons or ammunition lost to criminal elements,” Okoye clarified. The publication is a deliberate attempt to create panic and undermine the morale of our gallant troops.”

Okoye explained that soldiers from the 148 Battalion (Rear) have continued to record significant operational successes in clearance operations across Kogi and Kwara States.

He noted that in one recent operation, troops mounted a strong blocking position along the Kwara–Ekiti border, where they neutralized two armed bandits and recovered two brand-new AK-47 rifles.

The Army urged Nigerians to disregard the false report and continue supporting security agencies with useful information.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ending all forms of criminality across the country,” Okoye said. 

“We will sustain the tempo of operations until every criminal network in Kogi, Kwara, and nearby states is dismantled.”
