UK moves against rogue immigration lawyers
Immigration lawyers who devise means to cheat the system will face prosecution and have their cash confiscated, the British government announced on Wednesday.
New powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act will be extended to the Immigration Advice Authority, enabling the regulator to seize the criminal profits of unscrupulous advisers.
A statement by the Home Office said that such proceeds would be reinvested into frontline policing and border security, using dirty money to shut down the networks it once funded.
Part of the seizures would be channeled to the Multi Agency Cash Cell at the border, established to disrupt illicit finance, including money laundering and criminal activity such as illegal immigration advice.
The Immigration Advice Authority will henceforth be able to track and freeze assets, retrieve illegal earnings and bring offenders to justice, without relying on police support.
Citing examples, the Home Office revealed how different individuals illegally posing as immigration lawyers and advisers have made hundreds of thousands of pounds out of their so-called services.
“One bogus adviser raked in over half a million pounds by preying on desperate people,” the statement reads, while three others pocketed over £3 million by targeting victims online and offering advice on visa applications and how to challenge deportations.
Speaking on the new powers, Security Minister Dan Jarvis declared that rogue immigration advisers exploiting the United Kingdom system “will pay the price.”
“By backing the Immigration Advice Authority with tough new powers, we’re stripping criminals of their dirty money and using it to strengthen our borders and keep our streets safe,” the official noted.
The latest development adds to the powers given to the IAA under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which will see people posing as immigration lawyers facing fines of up to £15,000.

Following the leaked security alert issued by the Department of State Services, DSS, over a planned coordinated attacks on some communities in the state by a terror group, the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), the Ondo State government has assured the people of the state of safety.
While calling for calm over the development, Idowu Ajanaku described the leaked memo as a routine intelligence regularly shared among security agencies and government in the state.
According to Ajanaku, who disclosed that the intelligence is used to assess security threat and take proactive measures, the intelligence is already being acted upon by the government and relevant security agencies.
“Such reports are a normal part of security operations, aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats. The emphasis remains on maintaining vigilance and cooperation between security agencies and the government to prevent and respond to any potential threats.
“We urge all residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency. We want to reassure you that every measure is being taken to prevent any attack in Ondo State.
The DSS had in a leaked confidential memo addressed to the Brigade Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army, Akure, the state capital identified the target locations to include Oyin-Akoko, Eriti-Akoko both in Akoko North-West Local Council and Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Council Area of the state.
With the letter signed by one H.I Kana, the DSS revealed that the group has commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the identified communities, stressing the urgency to heightened security measures in the state in order to prevent such attacks from happening.

Oyebanji said as part of efforts to mark his third year in office, his administration will commission 10 road projects across all the central districts in the state, six renovated and equipped secondary schools in the state.
He said: “I give God all the glory for what is happening in Ekiti State. We are marking our third year in office as a government and for the past few days, we have been commissioning projects across the state.
“I’ve listened to everybody commending me and administration for a job well done, but in fairness, after God, the person to commend is the President of the country, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
“His audacious reforms, free more resources to the states for us to implement our social contract with our people.
“I can stand there and boast and beat my chest that every project we have done, we are doing in the state up to now, we have not taken a loan to do any one of them.”
The governor noted that Tinubu listens and is a transparent leader who shares Federal resources equitably among state.
“And that speaks to the fact that we have a president who is transparent, who allows the resources to be shared the way it should be shared.
“But one thing is for you to have the money at the center, one thing is for the center to even give it to you. But for once in our history as a state, Mr. President has given to us more than a fair share of the federation allocation. And to this Mr. President, we are extremely grateful,” he added.

Abia Earnings: Deputy Speaker Kalu Deserves Accolades, Not Attacks, Says Former Assembly Speaker Ohajuruka
Former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka has lauded the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu for his outstanding contributions to Abia State and the Southeast region.
Ohajuruka, in a press statement described Kalu’s remarkable performance as a “shining light” in the global and regional Parliaments, citing his legislative prowess and commitment to development.
He noted that Kalu’s achievements which includes facilitating the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), the University of Medical Sciences, Abia State, Federal College of Education, Police Detective College, and attraction of several infrastructure development projects all in Abia State.
He also lauded Kalu’s legislative sagacity and accomplishments, which includes the Reserved Seat Bill for women and State Police Bill, which have received national and international support and acclaim
Ohajuruka who is the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, South East Development Commission (SEDC) urged the public to appreciate Kalu for his service, frankness, dedication and honesty saying that Kalu’s recent remarks on the financial earnings of Abia State should not be misconstrued or taken out of context, rather, it was an honest call for government to do more because to whom much is given much is expected.
Recall that Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, came under attacks for asking the governor to commend President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for making funds available for infrastructure development, charging him to do more for the people.
However, the remarks did not go down well with the Abia State Government, including Kalu’s declaration that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will win Abia in 2027 general elections.
Ohajuruka wondered why the Deputy Speaker, who has attracted so many projects to Abia State and has been having a cordial working relationship with the governor, should be criticized for playing the Oliver twist.
The former speaker called for caution and restraints, saying that such criticism and attacks against Kalu were unnecessary and counterproductive.
According to him, “His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Ph.D, CFR, is a pride of the entire Nd’Igbo.
“He has used his good offices to attract laudable projects to the region in general and Abia State in particular. It will be very ill-advised for anyone or a group of persons to make an effort to malign and disparage a man with such an unparallel legislative pedigree and acumen. It is a bad way of rewarding one of our best legislators per excellence.
“Aside from being a shining light in the global and regional Parliament, Kalu is also doing well as a presiding officer of the 10th House of Representatives. His legislative prowess is unarguably unmatched. Kalu’s Seats Reserved Bill, State Police Bill, and many other pieces of legislation have not only received national encomiums but are highly rated in the international community as best in the 10th Assembly.
“Such a man deserves Accolade and not all these needless fights and distractions. Ndi Igbo is not known for this. We are always our brothers’ keeper. Let’s respect and celebrate our own.”
Ohajuruka also expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to President Tinubu for his extraordinary leadership and love for Ndi Abia.
He cited the President’s firm commitment, service and support for the people of Abia without discrimination or political bias, saying it has earned him so much respect and admiration
He further stated that President Tinubu is a true champion of the people who has set a shining example for future leaders to follow.
“His legacy will continue to inspire and shape our nation’s future, reminding us that servant leadership can make a profound difference in the lives of her citizens”, Ohajuruka said.

Business magnate and political strategist, Prince Tonye Princewill, has warned that Africa’s progress will continue to falter unless politics is redefined as a platform for service rather than a contest for power.
Princewill made the remark in Port Harcourt on Tuesday while chairing the opening session of the first international conference on “Advancing Politics and Governance for Sustainable Development,” organised by the Centre for Politics, University of Port Harcourt.
The event, themed “Politics, Resource Governance and Sustainable Development in Africa,” brought together participants from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, and Australia.
According to Princewill, “When politics is reduced to competition for power, rather than the platform for service, progress falters. When governance becomes transactional, instead of transformational, development becomes a mirage. But when politics is guided by vision and verifiable impact, and when governance is rooted in transparency, inclusion, and accountability, nations rise.”
Also speaking at the event, Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti, decried the declining voter turnout witnessed across African elections despite rising political mobilisation costs.
“You find striking evidence of this in the continued decline of voters’ turnout over successive elections, despite the rising cost of political mobilization,” Otti said, urging African leaders to rebuild public confidence in governance through accountability and citizen engagement.
In his welcome remarks, the Director of the Centre for Politics, Professor Fidelis Allen, said Africa’s future depends on how effectively it manages its economic resources, stressing that political will and inclusive governance are vital to the continent’s sustainable development.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has again refused to grant bail to alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.
Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling on Wednesday, dismissed Mamu’s third bail application, citing the prosecution’s diligence in handling the case.
The judge acknowledged Mamu’s health complaints but directed the Department of State Services, DSS, to take him to any appropriate medical facility chosen by his defence team for proper treatment. He also ordered that Mamu be allowed access to his family members.
Justice Umar held that bail could only be considered where the prosecution was not diligent, noting that the Federal Government had been consistent in prosecuting the case.
DAILY POST reported that Mamu, arrested on September 7, 2022, at Cairo International Airport by Egyptian security officials, was arraigned on March 21, 2023, on a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism financing and related offences.
He was accused of facilitating ransom payments between families of victims of the March 2022 Abuja–Kaduna train attack and the Boko Haram terrorists, allegedly for personal financial gain.
