Train Derailment: Preliminary Investigation Reports To Be Release In 23 Days, Says NSIB

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Tuesday hinted that preliminary report of the ongoing investigation into seriously incident involving the derailed Abuja-Kaduna bound train will be released to the public in 23 days.

The NSIB, through its Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jnr., gave the hint at a Press briefing in Abuja.

Badeh stated that the train, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) consisted of eight passenger coaches with one locomotive at the front and one at the rear departed Idu Station, Abuja, at 09:45 hours and stopped at Kubwa Station at 10:04 hours before continuing its journey.

“Shortly after passing a track changing point (switch/turnout) at Asham Station, five coaches (SC00 6T, SC00 8T, SC00 10T, E00 2S, and EB00 2S) derailed.

“The forward locomotive (CDD5C2 2701) and two coaches (SC002T, SC004T) overturned, while the rear locomotive (CDD5C1 W0004) and the last coach (SE00 2S) remained on the rail track.There were 583 persons on board, including crew.”

He noted that, an eyewitness reported that approximately 50 passengers may have been injured, though many were taken away by their families. Official records confirmed 12 person sustain minor to moderate injuries. No fatalities recorded. The injured received first aid treatment and were transported to medical facilities for further examination.

According to him, “The derailment resulted in significant damage to the track, sleepers, and switching mechanism. Services on the Abuja–Kaduna–Abuja corridor were temporarily suspended to allow for recovery and repairs.”

The NSIB boss, further explained that upon notification of the accident by the NRC (as required under Part 4 of the Regulation, including details such as the date, time, location, type of occurrence, and initial consequences), the NSIB has appointed an Investigator-in-Charge (IIC) based on qualifications to organise, conduct, and control the investigation.

He said: “This process focuses on gathering and analysing information, determining causes and contributing factors (such as actions, omissions, events, or conditions that led to or increased the probability of the derailment), and issuing safety recommendations.

“Recorded data from the train, including vigilance control systems, speedometers, on-board CCTV cameras, and over-speed trip mechanisms, will be preserved and analysed.”

He added that upon completion, a Draft Final Report will be prepared, which will include factual information, analysis, conclusions, and safety recommendations.

“This draft will be shared for consultation with stakeholders (including the NRC, other states, and interested parties) to solicit significant and substantiated comments.

The Final Report will then be released by the Director-General of the NSIB to recipients, including the Minister for Transport, the operator, and international bodies if applicable, and made publicly available.

However, Badeh hinted that interim statements may be issued on the anniversaries of the accident to update progress and highlight any ongoing safety issues.

It was all jubilation as Oduma community in Aninri local government Area of Enugu State came to a standstill as Igwe Jerome Iyiagu, traditional ruler of Oduma Community, conferred the prestigious Chieftaincy title of Ikesimba on Sir Dr. Kevin Chukwumobi, CEO Apams Funeral Ltd.

The title was bestowed upon him in recognition of his contributions to job creation and economic development in Igboland, as well as his friendship with the community.

Dr. Kevin Chukwumobi, visibly elated throughout the occasion was accompanied by friends and well-wishers.

Speaking after the event ,Dr Chukwumobi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his friend,Chief Pius Njoku and particularly the community for finding him worthy of the great honour. He pledged to continue the good work that warranted the honor.

“I’m particularly touched to receive this Chieftaincy title outside my home state. It’s truly fulfilling. Oduma community feels like a second home to me, given the strong bonds I’ve formed with its illustrious sons,” he said.

Apart from Dr Kevin Chukwumobi, Other high profile persons who received chieftaincy title include Chief (Comrd.)Pius Njoku , CEO, Pillars Energy Ltd, a native of Oduma , who received three chieftaincy titles namely Akuatuegwu, Okunenyeife and Ike Oduma.

Chief Nwabueze Umeh (Ofiafuluego na Okija) CEO, Nwumeh oil and Gas Ltd was honoured as the Owelle 11 of Oduma Kingdom.

Dr. Chukwumobi has previously received the Chieftaincy title of Ike Ukpor in his Ukpor community, Nnewi South LGA, in 2020, and has been honored by several other communities in Igboland with various titles.

The Justice Development and Peace Initiative (JDPI) of the Catholic church and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ekiti State council have demanded more quality and responsive representations from members of the National Assembly from Ekiti State.

The organisations made this known on Tuesday while giving in the series of the citizens’ watch report on the performance of the lawmaker representing Ekiti North senatorial district, Senator Cyril Fasuyi ; lawmaker representing Ikole/Oye federal constituency 1, Hon Akintunde Rotimi and his counterpart in Ido-Osi/Moba/Ilejeme federal constituency II, Hon Kolawole Akinlayo.

Delivering the report, the Director of JPDI, Revd Father Emmanuel Akingbade noted that the findings were as a result of the responses received from the random citizens interviewed across the constituencies.

While noting that the lawmakers were in office to advance the course of their constituents with quality legislative inputs and constituency engagements, the cleric explained that the lawmakers should be more accessible and available towards impacting their constituencies positively.

He acknowledged the various interventions of the three federal lawmakers in the area of empowerment and projects, adding that there is need for them to follow up with contractors and agencies on the projects in the budgets for effective implementation.

According to him, “ The findings apparently show that the representatives whose performances have been examined need to work on the quality of their representations. The system of democracy which we practice in Nigeria is ‘Participation Through Representation’.

“ This practice requires back-and-forth at all times between the representatives and the people they are representing; otherwise, the representatives might just be representing themselves and their cronies while they think that they are representing the people.

“ In the light of this, we recommend the following, the representatives need to put a clearly defined methodology in place as regards how they connect with the people they represent in an inclusive manner. Periodic Citizens’ Engagement is non-negotiable.

“ That nominated projects for a constituency must align with the needs of the people of the constituency is more than stating the obvious.

“ The people need to be more concerned with the projects being nominated for their Senatorial District and Federal Constituencies now that a Senator is entitled to nominate constituency projects worth Two Billion Naira yearly for his/her Senatorial District, and a Member of the House of Representatives is entitled to nominate constituency projects worth One Billion Naira yearly for his/her Federal Constituency.

“ Our collective efforts can achieve responsive and responsible governance, electorates should continue to ask their representatives questions.

On his part, the chairman of the Ekiti State NUJ, Kayode Babatuyi reiterated the constitutional role of the media to hold leaders and representatives of the people accountable in the interest of the people.

He added that the partnership between the NUJ and the JPDI was aimed at calling the attention of the lawmakers to the areas that need improvements and not to attack their personalities.
