An advocacy group, the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA), has raised the alarm over the alleged killings and disappearances of youths going on across Igbo communities in the South-east zone, saying that the carnage is “appalling and unprecedented.”
In a statement signed by its President of the group, Lolo Nneka Chimezie, which was made available to the media in Umuahia yesterday, IWA expressed horror at the senseless killings being perpetrated as the authorities appear helpless to arrest the ugly situation.
The women group, especially, decried the spate of violence and senseless killings that have been going on in Okigwe and other communities in Imo State, including Agbobu, Umulolo, Aku near Ihube, Umuowa in Mbato,whichht have all been deserted. It also noted that “it’s the same story (of killings and disappearances) at Isieke, Awomanma, Akokwa, and parts of Anambra State, where many communities have been deserted.
“Our greatest shock is that these barbaric attacks and senseless killings have continued to fester unchallenged despite the heavy presence of security operatives and multiple checkpoints on our roads.”
The women said that there was “the dire need” for the government to carry out thorough investigations “to unravel the true identities of the perpetrators behind these atrocities,” adding that “this atrocious evil cannot be allowed to go on.”
They noted that both the federal government and its security agencies have continued to be fixated on blaming the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) for every security breach in the South, thereby ignoring the activities of criminal groups operating in the zone.
According to IWA, its preliminary investigations “revealed that some of the criminals behind the atrocities in the Southeast are being sponsored to demonise members of the Indigenous People of Biafra.”
It expressed the belief widely held across the Southeast that non-state actors have been engaged by the authorities to perpetrate clandestine, sinister activities to justify their terrorist label on IPOB.
It alleged that “these criminals are the ones committing all the atrocities, especially in Imo State, while the security agencies and media keep pointing accusing fingers at IPOB and ESN (Eastern Security Network).”
IWA stated that though IPOB actually started sit-at-home on Mondays to protest the abduction, extraordinary rendition, and continued incarceration of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, it has since been discontinued after much appeals by Igbo leaders.
The Igbo women group wondered wh, since IPOB “has consistently distanced itself from the barbaric killings in Southeast,” the security agencies have continued to point fingers at them without verifiable evidence.”
They demanded an investigation into the activities of Ebubeagu security outfit operating in Imo and Ebonyi States to ascertain their true mission, as well as the role of a Niger Delta militant leader.
The woman said that a proper investigation would establish “if there are any links between Ebubeagu outfit and the boys of a former Niger Delta militant leader who once claimed that he was engaged by the federal government for security operations in the Southeast.
“We found out that Ebubeagu was formed around the same time that there was jail jailbreak in Imo State. We don’t know the background of the personnel of that security outfit. There is also a need for further investigation on the quality of people whoare recruited into Ebubeagu.”
IWA recalled that in December 2024, a former militant leader claimed he was contracted by the federal government to provide security in the Southeast and his men were on the ground in Imo State fighting against criminals.
“The questions are: who contracted him? Who was he killing? Was there any war in Imo State? How come the federal government has not debunked this or arrested him for questioning? How come the conventional security agencies are not enough to quell insecurity in Southeast that a non-state actor had to be hired?” the group asked.
The Igbo women challenged the federal government to demonstrate its genuine commitment to putting an end to the insecurity in the Southeast,, as it cannot blame IPOB and at the same time drag on resolving the Nnamdi Kanu issue.
“It’s also our belief that the federal government cannot pretend to be serious about the restoration of peace in the Southeast when it has refused to release Nnamdi Kanu despite several pleas and court orders,” IWA said.

The newly appointed Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Kebbi Area Command, Mahmoud Ibrahim, has pledged to intensify the fight against smuggling and improve revenue generation as he assumed duty on Monday.
Speaking at the Command’s headquarters in Birnin Kebbi during the handover ceremony, Ibrahim noted that Kebbi’s border with Niger and Benin Republics makes vigilance crucial to protecting Nigeria’s economy and national security.
He outlined a five-point agenda for his administration: tougher anti-smuggling operations, stronger revenue mobilisation through automation, tighter border control in collaboration with other security agencies, stakeholder engagement, and improved welfare and training for officers.
Ibrahim warned that smuggling networks, corruption, indiscipline and sabotage would be met with firm sanctions, while officers who demonstrate professionalism would be rewarded.
He urged officers to recommit to the service’s core values of integrity, efficiency and professionalism, stressing that Kebbi must play a key role in securing Nigeria’s borders and facilitating legitimate trade.
Acknowledging his predecessor, Comptroller Chidi Nwokore, he pledged to build on the achievements recorded in revenue mobilisation, anti-smuggling patrols and community relations.
Ibrahim also called for cooperation from traders, border communities and other stakeholders to promote lawful trade and shared prosperity.

The Senior Special Assistant Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement Tuesday that Nathan, who until now, was the Permanent Secretary, Youth Development Secretariat of the FCTA, was appointed in an acting capacity, pending the appointment of a substantive Head of Service.
The appointment takes immediate effect.
Nathan’s appointment was as a result of the death, last week Monday, of Mrs Grace Adayilo, the FCTA Head of Service.
She once served as the Director Finance and Administration in the office of the Honourable Minister of FCT before her appointment as Permanent Secretary.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, direct descendants of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Alayeluwa Oba Theophilus Adenuga, popularly known as Folagbade, has warned against the distortion of Customs, saying only its immediate family has the legitimate right to present candidates for the vacant Awujale stool.
They stated this on Monday, while addressing the controversy surrounding succession to the revered throne, and described the recent claims by some distant relatives allegedly parading themselves as part of the Fusengbuwa ruling house as misleading and unfounded.
DAILY POST reports that the next in line to succeed the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on 13 July at the age of 91 after 65 years in power, is the Fusengbuwa ruling house.
The head of the family and son of Oba Folagbade, Prince Bamidele Adenuga, explained that history and tradition has always left the immediate family of the ruling house with the power to present candidates.
He insisted that it has been a consistent practice across generations and was backed by the Chiefs Law of 1959.
He said, “In Ijebu custom, the ruling house empowered to present candidates has always meant the immediate family of the last king within that lineage.
“In our case, that responsibility falls on the direct descendants of Oba Folagbade. This has been the consistent practice across generations and it is well supported by the Chiefs Law of 1959”.
Also speaking, Secretary of the Ruling House, Prince Adekunle Adenuga, mentioned that the stool of Awujale has never been thrown open to distant relatives or extended kinship, stressing that only eligible male descendants are the sons and grandchildren of the last monarch.
“The stool of Awujale has never been thrown open to distant relatives or extended kinship. Even in cases where ruling houses were skipped in history, it was because the immediate king left no male heir.
“At no point were unqualified relatives considered. Attempts to expand the definition of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House are inconsistent with our customs and consequently, a distortion of our heritage mischievous of bringing in ineligible persons,” he added.
Meanwhile, the eldest progeny and daughter of Oba Folagbade, Princess Mosunmola Odukomaiya, clarified that sharing a common ancestry does not equate to eligibility for kingship and warned that the stool must not be desecrated by impostors.
She called for unity among all Ijebu sons and daughters, urging them not to be swayed by misinformation.
According to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, a list of eligible princes had already been compiled and as soon as the Kingmakers officially announced the commencement of the selection process, the list would be sent to the Odis.
They commended the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council and the Kingmakers for their honesty and dedication to upholding Ijebu tradition, and praised the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his promise to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra, POB, leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has rejected calls by the Nigerian Consultative Forum, NCF, for President Bola Tinubu to grant him amnesty, insisting that Kanu is innocent and should be released unconditionally.
In a statement issued by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the family on Monday, the NCF’s proposal was described as “reprehensible, defamatory, and legally indefensible.”
Recall that at a press briefing in Abuja over the weekend, NCF Chairman, Dede Uzor Uzor, and the Secretary-General, Dr. Frank Udemadu, had urged the federal government to extend amnesty to both Abba Kyari, the former police officer facing drug and money laundering charges, and Kanu.
But the Kanu family dismissed the comparison as scandalous.
“This scandalous conflation of a globally recognized political prisoner with an individual accused of heinous crimes is not merely offensive—it is a calculated act of defamation, an affront to justice, and a deliberate attempt to undermine the rule of law,” Prince Emmanuel stated.
According to the family, Kanu has no need for amnesty since he was already acquitted by the Court of Appeal.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was discharged and acquitted by the Nigerian Court of Appeal, a decision rooted in the jurisdictional nullity of his unlawful rendition.
“Under Section 36(9) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, an acquittal by a superior court of record is final and inviolable, even by the Supreme Court. The suggestion of ‘amnesty’ for an innocent man is an insult to justice and a mockery of Nigeria’s constitutional framework,” the statement noted.
The family further criticized the Supreme Court’s later decision to remand Kanu, describing it as a violation of the constitution.
“The Supreme Court’s subsequent decision to remand Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for trial is a flagrant violation of constitutional law, a criminal desecration of Nigeria’s judiciary and a betrayal of democratic principles,” the statement added.
On the attempt to equate Kanu with Abba Kyari, the family said it was “an international disgrace.
“Abba Kyari faces allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering..with full legal avenues to defend himself. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by contrast, is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, the largest peaceful self-determination movement in Africa.
“To equate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with Kyari is not just intellectually dishonest—it is a deliberate attempt to tarnish a global symbol of peaceful resistance,” Prince Emmanuel stressed.
The family issued a global appeal to world powers, human rights organizations, and foreign missions to intervene in Kanu’s case.
“The world cannot stand idly by while Nigeria’s government undermines the rule of law and erodes its credibility on the global stage.
“This is not a matter of political expediency—it is a test of the international community’s commitment to justice, sovereignty, and human rights,” the statement declared.
Prince Kanu vowed that the family will not relent in the struggle for his release.
“The Kanu Family stands resolute: justice must prevail. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must be freed now, and those responsible for his persecution must be held accountable.
“The world is watching, and history will judge those who remain silent in the face of this injustice,” he said.
