Lagos State Government has initiated the construction of natural water flow channels along major road corridors in flood-prone areas of Lagos Island.

The initiative was announced during the groundbreaking of an ultra-modern shopping complex at the site of the former Pelewura iron rod market in Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island.

According to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the project is being executed in collaboration with the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area and is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, explained that the regeneration of the Pelewura market area is central to the state’s master plan for Lagos Island.

“Although Lagos Island is not technically below sea level, its proximity to the waterline makes effective drainage management critical. We are now creating natural water flow channels, which requires removing structures that obstruct drainage,” Olumide said.

He added that the project aims to restore efficient water flow and return Lagos Island to a time when its drainage system was functional. “Growing up, we could play with paper boats in the drains because water flowed freely. That is the vision we are working to restore,” he noted.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun, described the shopping mall project as a landmark that will breathe new life into the Island.

The Chairman of Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, pledged that the project would be delivered within the stipulated timeframe, assuring residents of the government’s commitment to sustainable development.

A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has responded to a recent claim by former President, Goodluck Jonathan, that Nigerian politics is full of betrayers.

He urged young Nigerians aspiring to go into politics to learn from Goodluck Jonathan’s experience.

Jonathan had recently claimed he was betrayed while seeking re-election in 2015.

Jonathan made the remark in Benin, the Edo State capital, during the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe.

According to the former president, politics in the country’s standard is about betrayals.

Sani himself is not a newcomer in Nigerian politics.

He last served as the Senator representing the Kaduna central district in the Nigerian Senate.

“GEJ just said that Nigerian politics is full of betrayers, liars and traitors.

“I hope young people aspiring to join politics are listening to him and learning from his experience,” Sani wrote on X.

Jonathan is widely being tipped across Nigeria to return to politics in 2027.

Some political observers believe that he is the right candidate to bear the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the next general election.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has claimed that there is an unfolding propaganda designed to condition the minds of the international community ahead of the October 10, 2025, ruling in the case of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The secessionist organisation said this in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful on Friday, alleging that some individuals were deliberately suppressing positive reports about Kanu.

According to IPOB, there are emerging negative stories being circulated against Nnamdi Kanu just to discredit him.

The pro-Biafra group said this was being done for the sole reason of influencing public opinion ahead of the October 10 ruling.

Nnamdi Kanu is expected to appear before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja on October 10.

IPOB said there are attempts being made to condition the minds of the international community ahead of the judgment.

“Reports that vindicate our leader are deliberately suppressed,” the statement by Emma Powerful said.

IPOB said that this was not the first time Nnamdi Kanu’s identity was being misrepresented, recalling an incident prior to his arrest in 2021.

IPOB insisted that such deliberate distortions are paving the way for what it called a “pre-arranged judgment” against its leader in October.

The group called on the United Nations, the United States Congress, the Human Rights Council, and international media organisations to take note of what it described as a dangerous trend, insisting that history would hold all those responsible accountable.

DAILY POST reports that self-proclaimed Biafra prime minister, Simon Ekpa was recently convicted by the government of Finland.

Following the conviction of Mr Ekpa, IPOB said it was not bothered by whatever happened to the Finland-based agitator, insisting that he was alone in his travails.

IPOB said it is not connected to the activities of Ekpa.

Tension is mounting in Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, following the mysterious disappearance of sacred regalia belonging to the Apetu stool, barely two weeks after its occupant, Oba Joseph Oloyede, was sentenced to prison in the United States for COVID-19 fraud.

The missing artefacts include the revered Aare crown and a collection of ancient royal beads, symbols that embody centuries of Ipetumodu’s royal heritage.

Sources within the community allege that aides and close associates of the embattled monarch were involved in the evacuation of the regalia from his private residence, which has served as the temporary palace since the demolition of the original royal court.

A respected chieftain from one of the ruling houses expressed deep concern about the implications for the town’s future.

“The crown is gone, and those behind its disappearance may not understand the consequences. Without the crown and beads, the enthronement of a new monarch could be plunged into crisis.

“More importantly, they risk provoking the wrath of the deities that guard this community,” he warned, urging those responsible to return the items before “it becomes too late.”

The development comes on the heels of Oba Oloyede’s conviction in the United States. The monarch, who holds dual Nigerian and American citizenship, was arrested in May 2025 alongside Pastor Edward Oluwasanmi.

DAILY POST recalls that earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko sentenced Oloyede to 56 months in prison for his role in a $4.2 million COVID-19 relief fraud scheme.

Community elders fear that the twin crises, the monarch’s imprisonment abroad and the disappearance of sacred regalia at home, could leave Ipetumodu in a spiritual and cultural dilemma, particularly in succession matters.
