Piqued by the attendant carnage on Nigeria highways and other hazardous health-related issues, a university lecturer, Professor Adetunji Adeyinka, has tasked the federal government to urgently review the transport policy in the country and encourage people to commute via non-automobile modes of transport.
Professor Adeyinka made this call while speaking as the guest lecturer at 30th inaugural lecture of Federal University, Lokoja, yesterday
Adeyinka explained that automobiles use fossil fuels that produce hydrocarbons and substances that are harmful to the environment and human health.
In his paper titled, ‘Unplanned Cities, The Dilemma of The Transport Planning and Development in Nigeria’, Adeyinka stated that over 1.61 million people have died on highways across the globe.
According to him, “There is a need to construct and rehabilitate the existing roads to accommodate modern vehicular traffic. There should be provision of some basic transport facilities such as pedestrian walkways, Zebra crossing and street lights.”
He pointed out that provision of pedestrian walkways will encourage students to walk to schools and make them healthier.
He noted that it is necessary to encourage the design and construction of bicycle paths that will run alongside the main roads, stressing that this will reduce the pressure on public transport and personal vehicles. The bicycle is seen as an ecological and low-cost alternative to meet the mobility needs of people.
“This mode of transportation is common in European countries most especially in the Italian city of Venice and Braga in Portugal. Priority should be given to routine maintenance of road networks by the three tiers of government.
“Through regular sensitisation and sanitation exercises, there should be a change in the attitude of citizens towards the maintenance of road transport infrastructure and drainage facilities so as to enhance free flow of water. In order to reduce traffic congestion, this lecture recommends that mass transit and light rail should be introduced in Nigerian cities and other African countries.
“This will, no doubt, reduce the volume of vehicular movement on roads. These modes of transport are more environmental-friendly and sustainable for urban mobility compared to large number of para-transit modes of transportation.
“The operation of motorcycles and tricycles should be restricted to the feeder roads because, apart from the fact that they carry few passengers, their operation on highways poses significant safety risks.
“Their mode of operation is worrisome as they mingle and compete with heavy-duty vehicles on highway.”

In a bold move to combat the scourge of banditry and insecurity, the Sokoto State Government has procured 10 brand-new Hilux patrol vans and 150 motorcycles to bolster the fight against criminal elements in the state.
The vehicles and motorcycles were formally presented to representatives of the Police, Army, Air Force, and Department of State Services (DSS) by the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, in a ceremony held at the Government House.
According to Sifawa, the procurement of the vehicles and motorcycles is a direct response to the request made by the security agencies for logistical support to enhance their operations against insecurity in the state.
“The Sokoto State Government is committed to supporting our security agencies in their efforts to keep our state safe and secure,” Sifawa said. “These vehicles and motorcycles will undoubtedly enhance the capacity of our security operatives to respond effectively to security challenges in the state.”
The 10 vehicles are in addition to the 170 vehicles earlier procured and distributed by the Ahmed Aliyu-led administration since inception, aimed at equipping security operatives to effectively combat banditry.
The breakdown of the allocation indicates that the police and Army received four Hilux vans each, while the DSS and Air Force received one vehicle each. For the motorcycles, the Army received 20, the police received 15, and the Air Force received four.
Speaking on behalf of the benefiting agencies, the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Musa, commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his swift response to their request for additional logistical support.
“We are grateful for the governor’s commitment to supporting our efforts to keep the state safe,” Musa said. “These vehicles and motorcycles will be deployed strictly for the purpose they were provided, and we assure the public that we will do everything in our power to secure every part of the state.”
“The procurement of the vehicles and motorcycles is a significant boost to the security apparatus in Sokoto State, and it is expected to have a profound impact on the fight against banditry and insecurity in the state.
“As the security agencies take delivery of the new vehicles and motorcycles, residents of Sokoto State can rest assured that their government is doing everything in its power to keep them safe and secure.
“The move is also a testament to the Sokoto State Government’s commitment to supporting the security agencies in their efforts to combat insecurity, and it is expected to serve as a deterrent to criminal elements operating in the state.
“With the procurement of the vehicles and motorcycles, the Sokoto State Government has sent a clear message that it will not tolerate any form of criminality in the state, and that it will do everything in its power to protect the lives and property of its citizens.”

The disease eats away human flesh and destroys bones.
According to Sahara Reporters, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, confirmed the outbreak on Saturday.
Bashir said specimens from affected patients had been sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, in Abuja for histology and further analysis, with results expected within 10 days.
He disclosed that while 28 cases had been identified, only eight victims accepted medical treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH, Yola, despite the state government covering the costs.
The medical expert urged residents to seek proper treatment instead of relying on traditional medicine and to report any strange health conditions in their communities promptly.
According to the report, the outbreak is most pronounced in Malabu, a community in Fufore Local Government Area, where residents say the disease begins like a boil, bursts, and gradually eats into flesh, damaging bones.
One of the victims, Mrs. Phibi Sabo, described how the disease started as a boil before bursting and leaving her with an open wound that destroyed her leg bones.
Another patient, Junaidu Adamu, said he had spent over N200,000 on treatment in the last two months without recovery.
The District Head of Malabu, Aliyu Hammawa, said at least 30 persons had been affected, with some receiving care at MAUTH while others remained in local facilities or at home.
The outbreak has raised fresh concerns about Nigeria’s preparedness for emerging diseases and the gap between modern healthcare and traditional practices in rural areas.
