Residents of Oworonshoki, Lagos, on Monday staged a protest that disrupted traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge, following the demolition of houses in their community by the state government.

The demonstration, which began in the early hours of the day, caused heavy gridlock as commuters and motorists were forced to seek alternative routes into the mainland.

Protesters, who turned out in large numbers, accused the government of carrying out the demolition exercise without proper notice or compensation, leaving several families displaced and homeless.

The demolition, which commenced on Saturday, was carried out by a joint enforcement task force of the Lagos State Government, targeting unapproved structures along the Lekki and Iyana Oworonshoki coastal lines.

During the protest, demonstrators confronted the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, insisting they would not vacate the bridge unless demolition equipment was withdrawn from the area.

Security operatives were later deployed to disperse the crowd and restore order, allowing traffic flow to resume on the previously blocked lane.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has terminated the appointment of Fegho John Umunubo as Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy in the Office of the Vice President.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday, September 8, 2025, by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye.

“Stakeholders and constituents of the digital and creative economy, at home and abroad, as well as the general public are hereby notified that FEGHO JOHN UMUNUBO, who hitherto had served as the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy (Office of the Vice President), has been disengaged with immediate effect.”

The statement further noted that Umunubo’s disengagement took immediate effect and cautioned stakeholders in the digital and creative economy not to engage with him in the name of the administration.

Although reports had earlier suggested that Umunubo was suspended on September 2 over an alleged breach of contract linked to the N5 billion Creative Fund initiative.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday visited former Sokoto State governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, at his Abuja residence.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on media practitioners across Nigeria to use their platforms to expose fraud, financial crimes, and corruption in all sectors of society.

Olukoyede made the call in Warri, Delta State, while addressing the 12th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN). He was represented by Assistant Commander of the EFCC and Head of Public Affairs, Benin Zonal Directorate, ACE I Williams Oseghale.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Corruption, Governance and Media in Nigeria,” Olukoyede praised the ACSPN for highlighting the role of the media in strengthening governance and combating corruption. He described the media as a critical partner in holding leaders accountable and safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

Recalling the contributions of pioneers such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Anthony Enahoro, the EFCC chairman noted that the media had historically stood at the forefront of Nigeria’s struggles against colonialism, social injustice, and military misrule. He urged contemporary journalists to uphold that legacy by embracing investigative journalism and exposing fraudsters as well as public officials who misuse public funds.

“I urge media practitioners to use their platforms to fight corruption and the twin evils of economic and financial crimes. Current journalists must emulate their predecessors by exposing the atrocities of fraudsters and those who divert public resources,” Olukoyede said.

He emphasized that the media fulfills its constitutional mandate as the “Fourth Estate of the Realm” only when it holds the government accountable and educates the public on the dangers of corruption.

Olukoyede added that corruption can be defeated if citizens individually and collectively embrace accountability, transparency, and due process, while urging the media to continue supporting the EFCC in educating Nigerians on the devastating effects of corruption.

Also speaking at the event, ACSPN President, Professor Rotimi Williams Olatunji, said the conference theme was timely, given that corruption erodes governance, economic growth, social justice, and public trust. He acknowledged the challenges. confronting the Nigerian media but stressed that forums such as the annual conference provide opportunities for practitioners to share ideas, review pressing issues, and advance communication scholarship and practice both locally and globally.

DAILY POST reports that Sowore, while reacting to a comment made by the President during his state visit to Brazil, described the Nigerian leader as a “criminal”.

In a viral video, the President was heard saying that since he took office, there “is no more corruption” in the currency market.

Reacting, Sowore wrote on his X handle: “this criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

His post, however, landed him in trouble as the Nigerian secret police reportedly approached X and Facebook to deactivate his accounts.

The DSS also issued a one-week ultimatum to the activist, warning him to delete and retract his statement or face the consequences.

But in his latest post on X, Sowore vowed to stand by his statement, saying, “Even if you give me till the end of Tinubu’s tenure in 2027, I will NOT retract my statement.”

Operatives of the Ondo Security Network Agency, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps, have petitioned the State House of Assembly over non-issuance of appointment letters since their recruitment into the corps.

While lamenting the non regularisation of their official engagement as Amotekun operatives since 2020, the aggrieved officers described their situation a pathetic considering what their counterparts in other south west have been benefitting.

In a petition filed through their lawyer, Tope Temokun, the operatives maintained that the situation amounts to discrimination, unfair labour practice, and a violation of their constitutional and international rights to work under fair and satisfactory conditions.

Temokun, a human rights activist, who copied the Attorney-General of the state, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the petiition, which was addressed to the Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, demanded immediate investigation and action on the non-issuance of appointment letters.

With the House Committee on Human Capital Development, Committee on Allocation and Welfare also copied, the lawyer revealed that only warrant cards were issued to the operatives, adding that the practice denies them job security, pension rights, and dignity as workers.

“Our clients have been in the continuous service of Ondo State under the Amotekun Corps since the establishment of the Agency by law in 2020. They have discharged their duties faithfully and at great personal risk in defence of lives and property across the State.

“Regrettably, from inception till date, no letter of appointment has been issued to the officers of the Corps in Ondo State, despite the fact that their counterparts in other States of the South-West region where Amotekun operates have been duly issued appointment letters.

“Instead, our clients were given mere warrant cards, which are operational instruments, but which in law cannot be a substitute for an employment contract. A warrant card is purely an operational instrument which only identifies an officer for field duty. It does not set out terms of service, salary, discipline, or pension rights. It is not a written contract stating duties, benefits, or terms of employment, as required under Section 7 of the Labour Act, Cap L1, LFN 2004.”

Akwa Ibom State government has announced plans to recruit winners and those who were exceptional in their performances at the sports festival in the state into the upcoming Sports Academy for extensive grooming and adequate exposure.

The governor of Akwa Ibom, pastor Umo Eno disclosed this on Monday, while declaring open the Sports festival at the Uyo Township stadium, themed: “Nurturing talents, promoting tourism.”

He said the festival was aimed at discovering talents, and showcasing the state’s potential in the global sports arena.

Governor Eno, who was represented by his Deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, urged the athletes to put their talents and skills on full display and show the spirit of sportsmanship.

His words, “We must discover new talents, grow and expose them to the agents and managers at different levels and see them blossom and grow like others are currently doing across the sporting world.

“This sports festival is aimed at discovering those talents who would eventually fly the flag of our dear state and bring us laurels. As I said when the games torch was handed over to me a little over a week ago, sports today is a multi-billion global industry.”

The governor, however, attributed lack of modern equipment as one of the major reasons for the inability of the state to win laurels at major national and international sporting events.

He said the state government has gone ahead with the purchase of world-class sporting equipment which will help youths to train, compete and excel at international events.

He expressed optimism that with the availability of sporting tools and facilities; there would be a total turnaround as Akwa Ibom youths would be equipped to compete and conquer the world in various sporting activities.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Commissioner for Sports, Mr Paul Bassey said the Ministry has a mandate to discover talents and nurture them for the Ibom Sports Academy.

He hinted that over 3000 athletes drawn across the 31 local government areas of the state would be competing in the 18 categories at different locations from Uyo and Eket Township Stadia to Tower of Ivory and Aka Community Secondary Schools.

While thanking the governor for creating a standalone Ministry of Sports and showing passion for sports development! Bassey said the success of the festival was the support and collaboration of council chairmen and other stakeholders.
