Nigerian Nursing Council abolishes exam failure policy
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, has abolished its long-standing policy that barred student nurses from continuing their training after three failed attempts at the Council’s professional examinations.
In a circular dated September 1, 2025, and signed by the Registrar/CEO, Ndagi Alhassan, the Council announced that candidates who fail any part of the professional exam will now be allowed to retake only that section until they secure a pass.
The new policy takes effect from September 2025.
The circular, titled ‘Nursing Education Reforms: Elimination of Students After Three Professional Examination Attempts’, was addressed to state commissioners of health, teaching hospital directors, university vice chancellors, heads of nursing schools, and professional associations.
According to the Council, the reform reflects its commitment to align nursing education with global best practices by shifting from an elimination-focused policy to a more supportive, student-centered approach.
“Our mission to promote and maintain excellence in nursing and midwifery education and practice calls for a more inclusive academic environment devoted to building resilience and lifelong learning,” the statement read.
The NMCN urged institutions to implement measures that would support struggling students, while stressing that candidates must maintain at least 80% lecture and clinical attendance to qualify for re-sits. It also directed that each failed attempt at a re-sit would count against the training institution.
The Council said the change was necessary to ensure fairness, enhance professional competence, and address concerns raised about the previous policy.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has resolved recent family differences within the Ife federal constituency of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), charging all stakeholders to beware of agents of division engineered by the opposition.
At a high powered reconciliation meeting attended by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi; Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi; state Chairman of the party, Hon Sunday Bisi; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon Teslim Igbalaye; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon Kazeem Akinleye; Chairman of the Commissioners’ Forum, Alhaji Ganiyu Olaoluwa, and other party stalwarts, the family feud was declared fully resolved with common resolution to forget and forgive for next year victory.
Governor Adeleke, while rounding off the meeting, described the recent disagreement as a product of communication gap and deliberate efforts of some external forces to sow seeds of discord within the party, commending the leaders for their openness and brotherhood.
He said: “Throughout this meeting today, I see that Ile Ife PDP is truly united. I listen to all the leaders here and I see clearly a communication gap among the leaders. There is also a strong sign of an outsider plot to divide Ife PDP.
“Now that we have seen the roots of the matter, I charge us to get back to work. Our administration has done so much for Ifeland and we are still going to do more.
“Ile Ife is a PDP territory. Go back and sustain the tempo. I commend the elders and leaders, the senatorial leader, the local party chairmen, the elected party chairmen, party chiefs and operatives. Go back and continue working for victory of the party.”
Earlier, the party Chairman, Hon Sunday Bisi, described the incident leading to a vote of no confidence as a family affair, adding that “all parties have demonstrated true love for the party.
“We are glad that all issues have been ironed out. It is the resolution of this meeting that all statutory meetings for party mobilisation should reconvene and all party members and leaders should decisively frown at any act capable of misinterpretation as anti-party activity”, the party chairman told the meeting.

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has petitioned the Police Service Commission, PSC, accusing senior officers of the Kaduna State Police Command of gross misconduct.
In a letter dated September 8, 2025, the former governor accused the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna of abusing his office.
El-Rufai urged the PSC to immediately launch an impartial investigation into what he described as “unlawful and unconstitutional conduct” by authorities of the Command.
“I am writing as a citizen of Nigeria and former governor of Kaduna State to formally lodge this complaint and demand an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful and unconstitutional conduct of the Commissioner of Police and some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command,” parts of the petition read.
DAILY POST reports that there has been a face-off between El-Rufai and the Kaduna State Police Command.
On August 30, 2025, the former governor and some other opposition politicians were attacked by suspected political thugs during a meeting in Kaduna.
El-Rufai subsequently accused the police of collusion with the thugs, saying officers were watching while they were being attacked.
Reports emerged last week, indicating that the Command has invited El-Rufai, along with six senior members of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for questioning over allegations relating to criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief and causing grievous hurt.

The Federal Government has ordered the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to sanction any airline that disrupts flights without genuine reasons.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, Michael Achimugu, gave the order in a statement posted on X on Monday.
Achimugu cautioned that situations where airline staff deliberately abandon passengers and leave NCAA Consumer Protection officers to deal with angry customers would no longer be tolerated.
“While one understands the challenges that operators face in our peculiar operating environment, whoever ventures into this business must do it well. We must not always choose the easy way out. Don’t you want to be called ‘world class’?
“Don’t you want to compete at the highest level? If not for the sake of passengers who trust you to fly them safely, then at least for your own pride,” Achimugu said.
According to him, exposing NCAA officials to unnecessary risk while supporting airlines and protecting passengers’ rights was unacceptable.
“For infractions that are sanctionable, the authority will apply the fullest measures possible. We will not abandon the letters of our regulations.
“The Federal Government has instructed that airlines be named and shamed by the NCAA. While not all disruptions are the fault of airlines, operators must comply with the regulations whenever there is a disruption,” he added.
Achimugu confirmed that, in line with directives from the Federal Government and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the “naming and shaming” of erring airlines will commence immediately.

A Lagos High Court has restrained the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the management of the University of Lagos(UNILAG), Akoka, and others from taking further steps in the leadership dispute rocking the institution’s chapter of the union.
Justice Ismaila Ijelu, gave the order in a suit marked No. YSD/6531MJR/2025, filed by Comrade Gbenga Adenaiya and six others against Comrade Yusuf Ademola Rasaq, the University of Lagos, and six others.
The suit arose from a crisis between rival factions jostling for control of the university’s SSANU chapter.
The order followed the court’s consideration of motions ex parte, along with supporting affidavits, exhibits, and oral arguments presented by the claimants’ counsel, human rights lawyer Chief Ajose Abẹjoye, assisted by Olúwaṣeun Ikumelo, Esq.
After reviewing the submissions, the court granted leave for the motion to be heard during vacation and ordered that:
“Parties must maintain the status quo and must not do anything or take any step to undermine the authority of the court in any way.”
The judge further directed that all actions regarding the proposed election be suspended pending the determination of the suit.
Justice Ijelu issued the order after the plaintiffs requested that the court maintain the status quo ante bellum, stressing that no party should take steps that could foist a fait accompli on the court, prejudice its decision, or undermine its authority while the matter is pending.
The case has been adjourned to October 24, 2025, for hearing of the Motion on Notice.

The IATC maintains the action was taken without the consent of its chairman, the Och’Idoma, HRM Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo John.
The Council subsequently nullified the titles, invoking the Benue State Chieftaincy Law of 2016 (as amended), Part II, Section 7(d), which vests ultimate traditional authority in the IATC across Benue South.
In a statement, the body declared: “Such conferments are null, void, and of no legal, customary, or traditional effect. The Idoma Area Traditional Council remains the only legally recognized traditional authority of the Idoma nation, and any contrary action violates the law.”
Despite being served with a formal query, Oga Ero is yet to issue a reply or render an apology to the Och’Idoma, palace insiders disclosed.
A source further revealed that the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has been alerted, stressing that suspension remains likely if the monarch fails to give a convincing explanation.
“This hasn’t reached dethronement level. It’s a minor misunderstanding that could be settled, but it’s being exaggerated,” the source added.
