Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has inaugurated a 15-member Economic Committee tasked with accelerating industrialisation in the state.
The committee, chaired by former Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji, comprises seasoned economists, industrialists, and technocrats.
According to a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr Monday Uzor, members of the committee include Chief Ben Oka, Mrs Augustina Nwaoma Ekuma, Dr Joe Abah, High Chief Ituma Chukwuemeka Enviable, General Abel Obi Umahi, Chief Chibuike Orogwu, and Chief Dominic Nwibo.
Others are Chief Elechi Innocent Ojiugwo, Anayo Omoke, Dr Mark Abani, High Chief Ifeanyi Clement Okorie, Dr Edward Nkwegu, and Mr Mike Chukwu, while Associate Professor Ben Uruchi Odoh will serve as Secretary.
Charging the members, Governor Nwifuru said the committee was constituted to address erratic power supply, harness solid minerals, and support his administration’s industrialisation agenda.
“People will commend us for bringing industrialists and technocrats to guide us in developing our dear state,” the governor said.
“We are badly challenged, that is why we decided to bring people of experience to guide us. Our manifesto, christened The People’s Charter of Needs, is focused on industrialising Ebonyi and proving that we have what it takes to do business.”
The governor specifically urged the committee to advise on the reactivation of NIGERCEM, the establishment of another cement factory, and the creation of a salt production plant to justify Ebonyi’s identity as the “Salt of the Nation.”
He further noted the state’s power challenges, expressing optimism that Prof Nnaji’s expertise as a former Minister of Power would be instrumental in proffering solutions.
“We have created an industrial zone, and you have the capacity to put industries in this place,” Nwifuru added.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the chairman, Prof Barth Nnaji, described Governor Nwifuru as a visionary leader with the boldness and courage to drive Ebonyi’s development process.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has pledged the readiness of the nation’s judiciary to ensure swift and consistent adjudication of money laundering and terrorism financing cases.
Speaking at the 42nd edition of the Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, Justice Kekere-Ekun said the Nigerian judiciary understood that timely, predictable, and transparent judicial decisions were indispensable in meeting the requirements of the Financial Action Task Force, FATF.
Nigeria was placed on the FATF Grey List in February 2023, underscoring international concerns about the effectiveness of its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing, AML/CFT regime.
While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to secure Nigeria’s removal from the list, Justice Kekere-Ekun said that the listing served as a wake-up call, spurring unprecedented national reforms.
She said, “We remain firmly committed to ensuring Nigeria’s exit from the Grey List within the shortest possible time.”
According to her, the Nigerian judiciary remains committed to upholding the rule of law, enhancing judicial efficiency, and playing its role in combating economic crime.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria noted that no single country could adequately confront the challenges of cross-border economic crime alone.
“We must deepen collaboration across borders through effective mutual legal assistance frameworks, real-time intelligence sharing, judicial cooperation on transnational litigation and asset recovery, and dialogue such as those championed by the Cambridge Symposium, which foster enduring professional relationships and shared best practices,” she added.
She called on judges to continue to adapt doctrines, processes, and attitudes to match the pace of criminal innovation.
“Judicial conservatism must not be an excuse for inertia; rather, it must be guided by a deep commitment to justice, balance, and international cooperation,” she said.
She stated that collaboration with other jurisdictions was already yielding recognition, with FATF’s 2024 review acknowledging Nigeria’s progress in addressing many of the strategic deficiencies.
Justice Kekere-Ekun declared that the Nigerian judiciary had already undertaken significant improvements in infrastructure and expanded training for judges on economic and cybercrime matters.
She cited a recent Supreme Court decision in A.G. of the Federation v. Princewill Ugonna Anuebunwa, which she said reaffirmed the judiciary’s role in strengthening international cooperation.

The Adamawa State Government has directed owners of attachments and other temporary structures in the main market in Yola, the state capital, to remove them and vacate the premises.
The directive precedes a planned temporary closure of the market for a sanitation exercise, which will also involve the removal of such structures.
The Adamawa State Urban and Regional Planning Board, which is supervising the clean-up of the Jimeta Modern Market, said the exercise is intended to restore the market’s master plan.
It fixed Wednesday and Thursday, September 3 and 4, 2025, as the two days for the temporary closure.
“This notice serves as a warning to all owners of attachments and temporary structures within and outside the market,” the notice reads.
The board stressed that it would not spare any such structures if owners failed to remove them, but expressed regret over the inconvenience that the closure would cause the general public.
DAILY POST Post reports that the Jimeta Modern Market, which was originally constructed with internal roads wide enough for cars and trucks, has become so narrowed by attachments erected in front of almost every shop that even pedestrians struggle to move around.
Several previous efforts to dismantle the illegal structures failed, but this will be the first time such a drastic measure as temporarily closing the market will be taken.

The Nigerian government has expressed satisfaction with the conviction and sentencing of Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa to six years’ imprisonment by a Finnish court.
The government said the verdict of the Finnish court confirms that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, particularly in the South East.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, conveyed the federal government’s reaction in a statement he personally signed and released to the media on Monday in Abuja.
The statement read: “We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court.
“His conviction for the charges of terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South East.
“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration.
“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court.”

It will be recalled that RSIEC on Saturday conducted the local government elections across more than 6,000 polling units.
According to the commission, the All Progressives Congress, APC, won 20 local government areas in the exercise, while the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, secured only three.
Similarly, the APC won the councillorship election in 20 LGAs, while the PDP took three.
DAILY POST notes that this marks the first time APC has gained dominance in Rivers State since the return of democracy in 1999.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on Nigerian judges and prosecutors to take a cue from Finland, following the speedy trial and conviction of Simon Ekpa on terrorism-related charges.
A District Court in Finland, in a judgment, sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of terrorism-related charges.
According to the judgment, Ekpa was found guilty of participating in a terrorist organisation and publicly incited crimes for terrorist purposes.
Ekpa, who is based in Finland, is known for being behind the enforcement of a sit-at-home order every Monday in the South-east in solidarity with the actualization of a Biafra nation and also in protest of the continued detention of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu.
Reacting to the conviction, the President of the NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), who said he was yet to get full details of the Finland court judgment, stated that he was very impressed with the short time it took to conclude investigation and trial.
Osigwe stated this while presenting the communiqué from the NBA’s Annual General Conference (AGC), which held in Enugu recently.
“I look at the time it took to do the trial,
and the sort of evidence relied on by the court in order for them to arrive at a decision. That should be a lesson for us,” he said.
The NBA president noted that trials take a longer time in Nigeria because “most judges still write longhand” instead of embracing technology, adding that investigators and prosecutors should endeavour to get enough evidence, build up a good case before going to court.
Osigwe also called on security agencies to awake to their responsibilities in checking abuse of social media, adding that: “Persons who have access to social media should be careful how they utilize them to promote hate or terrorism.”
He said: “We should look at those who are using it to provide ethnic hatred, to promote terrorism, and get hold of such, and try them,” rather than filing cyber-bullying charge against citizens in political matters.
Meanwhile, the NBA faulted the invitation of awardees of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), by the Department of State Service (DSS).
According to the body, sending a confidential report in respect of each of the awardees would have been enough instead of the grilling of the nominees.
“It does not require DSS inviting them,” he said, adding that “unfortunately, our members went there without informing us”.
A life bencher and former General Secretary of the NBA, Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN), had condemned the clearance of awardees by the DSS, noting that it undermines the independence of the legal profession.
However, the Supreme Court, in its response, had pointed out that the screening was in line with Paragraph 23 (2) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee Guidelines, the body which is conferring the SAN rank on the lawyers.
But, the NBA is of the position that the job of the DSS should not go beyond sending confidential report on a nominee, because most of the information has already been volunteered by the lawyers themselves including reports from judges before whom the lawyers appear.
“Court records are there, Heads of Courts also write confidential report,” he added.
