The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday said President Bola Tinubu is fulfilling his promises of developing the capital city and its satellite towns.
Wike declared that residents of the capital city can hold the current government and leaders accountable for their electoral promises.
The minister spoke during the flag-off of the reconstruction and dualisation of Karu road, from Karu Interchange to Customs Clinic Junction, and other Karu township roads.
Wike said: “You have to hold us accountable when you have fulfilled part of your covenant by voting for people, ask them this question, you told that when we vote for you, this is what you are going to do for us, have you done it?
“And so Mr President made a promise that he was going to develop the city at the same time develop the satellite areas. I don’t know why they should include Karu as a satellite town, Karu is a city. The only problem that is being associated to satellite towns are the bad roads and now the roads will come up.
“Just as the Minister of State said, some few weeks ago, we were in Karu to flag off the provision of water to satellite towns for Karu, Orozo, Karishi area and which is being carried out by CGC.
“Remember that from Nyaya to Karishi, the express road used to be too bad but today we have been able to fix that road.”
The minister also urged the people of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, to support the current Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu in the upcoming council election.
Wike informed AMAC residents that Maikalangu has access to the government that he can leverage on to bring developmental projects to the council.
He said: “That’s why I will always want you to support those that can go to the government and say look my area is bad and the government will listen to them. Do you know that there are some people you will elect and they can’t talk to the government, do you know that?
“There are people you elect that have the audience of government. And that is why the Chairman of AMAC, Maikalangu – he has always been on my neck – he has always told me ‘sir, even though you have done Nyaya to Karishi, it will be unfair as the Chairman of AMAC because this Karu road has been a concern to us, do me that favour to and see whether you can under emergency reconstruct and dualize this Karo road.’
Wike urged residents to support Maikalangu because he has been very supportive of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, hence “we will listen to him.”
“Because he’s been a young man who has been very supportive of this Renewed Hope Agenda, we felt it would be better to encourage him and listen to him, so we are here today.
“If I were you, continue to support him because it means that he has the people of Karu at heart, it means that he has the people of AMAC at heart and that is why we say in politics if you fall for me, I fall for you; if you do for me, I do for you; if you love me, I love you; if you hate me, I hate you; if you push me, I push you,” he added.

WFP: US releases $32.5m to provide food for 764,205 IDPs in Nigeria
The United States has approved the release of $32.5 million in funding to the World Food Programme, WFP, Nigeria.
The US embassy in Nigeria disclosed this in a statement released on its website on Wednesday.
The embassy said the fund is to provide food assistance and nutrition to internally displaced persons, IDPs, in North-East and North-West Nigeria.
“World Food Programme Nigeria, with the US Government’s contribution of $32.5 million, will provide food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons across conflict-affected areas.
“With the US Government’s donation, the World Food Programme Nigeria will provide food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 beneficiaries across North-East and North-West Nigeria.
“This includes complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls and 43,235 children through electronic food vouchers,” parts of the statement read.
Insecurity in parts of Nigeria has put millions of IDPs at the risk of food shortage.

The Owa Obokun of Ijesa land, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup has said Nigerians are aware that to sustain democracy, there is need to let the people’s votes count.
Oba Haastrup also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to work according to their conscience to ensure there is free, fair and credible elections.
The monarch stated this during an advocacy visit by the Osun INEC team to his palace in Ilesa as part of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise.
Oba Haastrup while kicking against election rigging and violence also appealed to Ijesa sons and daughters to utilise the CVR exercise and register in order not to be short changed.
He said, “I believe we have learnt our lessons by sustaining democracy is by letting the vote count.
“INEC should work according to their conscience to ensure we have a free and fair and credible elections. If people vote and know their votes are counted, there will be no violence.
“For election to be successful, there is a need for registration, which is critical. If you register now, you can decide on who will represent you.”
The traditional ruler revealed that he will set up a committee to monitor the activities of the CVR process and promised to cooperate with INEC for a smooth CVR exercise.
“Your task is a very difficult one. I believe INEC has good intentions but I want to appeal to politicians to make the work easy by giving their cooperation,” he stated.
Earlier the Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke said the purpose of visit is to engage the palace with respect to the role of traditional institution on election activities.
Agboke maintained that traditional rulers were strong pillars to collaborate with to deliver on the INEC mandate.
While hinting that INEC has mobilised and the CVR was ongoing, the Osun INEC boss urged the traditional institution to assist the Commission helping to disseminate the message about the exercise.
He said, “INEC felt the traditional institution should come to INEC assistance by helping to sorted the message because this makes grater impact on the people.
“INEC also need help of traditional rulers to talk to the youth not to be instruments of thuggery and violence to be used for election violence.
“Over 300,000 registrants have put in their names in Osun during this current CVR exercise.
“Out people must know what INEC is doing and the traditional rulers to help us.”
He charged the youths not to subject themselves as instruments of election violence, adding that INEC is ready.

GITEX 2025: Let’s Use AI, Fintech, Others to Grow Economy, Says Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged innovators, investors and policymakers to leverage artificial intelligence, fintech, healthtech, edtech, agritech and other emerging sectors to grow Nigeria’s economy.
Sanwo-Olu made the call during the opening ceremony of the two-day GITEX Nigeria Tech Expo and Future Economy Conference 2025 in Lagos.
The conference was organised in partnership with KAOUN International and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is also a partner in organising the conference.
The governor said GITEX Nigeria was more than a showcase of technology, describing it as a platform for building partnerships and sparking innovation.
He said that it was also an opportunity to lay the groundwork for Nigeria’s ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
“We are not just crafting a digital Nigeria; we are shaping a digital Africa that will inspire the world,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He said that Lagos was already positioning itself as the hub of Africa’s digital future.
Quoting the Financial Times, he said Nigeria was home to 23 of the fastest-growing companies.
According to the governor, this is evidence of a strong innovation ecosystem powered by government policies, private sector investment and resilient startups.
Sanwo-Olu noted that events such as GITEX created opportunities for talent development, expansion of digital infrastructure, and strategic partnerships.
He added that these opportunities would help transform traditional sectors such as education, healthcare and agriculture.
He urged participants to explore new technologies and ideas that could uplift underserved communities and promote inclusive growth.
According to him, the future economy conference and the startup festival at the Landmark Centre are designed to provide a platform where visionaries, investors and decision-makers can connect to shape Africa’s digital future.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos was not just a city but a movement for innovation, adding that the outcomes from GITEX Nigeria would play a role in creating jobs and scaling local startups.
He stressed that it would also strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy. (NAN)

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, has said that terrorism exploits porous borders, weak governance, and deep socio-economic disparities to wreak havoc in West Africa and the Sahel region.
He stated that modern-day terrorism has assumed a more complex and dangerous character.
Declaring open the Regional Conference on Combating Emerging Terrorist Groups and Strengthening Sustainable Security in the ECOWAS Region and the Sahel, organised by the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA) in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja Wednesday, the minister also noted that terrorism has become one of the greatest threats to peace and stability in West Africa and the Sahel.
He stressed that terrorism takes root in communities where grievances are left unaddressed and spreads through ungoverned spaces where institutions are absent.
While acknowledging that these realities are stark, the minister emphasised that they do not define the region’s destiny, rather, they are challenges that governments must confront collectively – with determination, innovation, and solidarity.
He said: “We are dealing with adversaries who are adaptive, highly networked, and increasingly sophisticated in their methods. Their collaboration with international terrorist organisations has created a web of instability that stretches across borders. They exploit encrypted communication platforms, deploy unmanned aerial systems, and radicalise vulnerable youth online.
“This evolution underscores the urgency of our meeting today. Terrorism, insurgency and insecurity are not abstract threats – they are existential challenges that endanger our people, our economies and our shared future.
“This conference is therefore more than an opportunity for dialogue; it is a call to action. We are gathered here to forge consensus, mobilise resources and design strategies that are both proactive and region-specific. The future stability of ECOWAS and the Sahel will depend on the decisions we take here – and the commitments we follow through afterwards.”
Preferring workable solutions, Badaru said the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Standby Force must be pursued with renewed vigour.
According to him, “Harmonisation of legal frameworks across member states will ensure that terrorists and their support networks find no safe haven. The creation of a regional counterterrorism task force, fully trained and equipped for rapid deployment is an initiative we must embrace.
“At the same time, capacity building is essential. Our forces require not only modern equipment but also advanced training to meet the evolving challenges of counterterrorism. Thirdly, we must address the root causes of radicalisation. Military force is necessary but not sufficient. Poverty, unemployment, exclusion and poor governance provide fertile ground for extremist ideologies. Investing in education, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring good governance are equally critical to our long-term security. Winning the hearts and minds of our populations will deny extremist groups the local support they seek to exploit.”
In his welcome address, the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Major General Adamu Laka, stressed that these groups are not only multiplying but also exploiting digital spaces and new technologies to fight, radicalise and recruit, especially among the youth.
This evolving threat, Laka said, demands that the region match their adaptability with resilience, innovation and stronger collaboration across borders.
Noting that sustainable security is not solely about military action but about winning hearts and minds, restoring trust in governance and investing in human development, Laka stated that it is in this spirit that Nigeria established the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, to coordinate the country’s counterterrorism efforts.

The Kano State Government said it has taken note of the recent announcement by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) about setting up a Kano State Elders Council.
This is contained in a statement by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, on Wednesday.
The statement said while the government values the good intentions of ACF and other groups that want to contribute to Kano’s growth, it wishes to remind the public that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had already established the Kano Elders Advisory Council (KEAC) in January 2024.
“In this regard, the State Government, leveraging its open-government policy, warmly invites all organizations, individuals, and interested groups to align with the already established framework.”
The government revealed that the KEAC is made up of respected personalities such as former governors, deputy governors, state and federal lawmakers, retired judges, Islamic scholars, business leaders, traditional rulers, and retired security chiefs from Kano.
It added that the Council is to provide a neutral, non-political platform that relies on wisdom and experience to guide government policies for the good of all Kano people, adding that it is the first of its kind in the state and is not linked to any political ambitions.
“We firmly believe that by working together, we can strengthen the operations of the Council and ensure that its objectives are fully realized in the interest and common good of our people.”
The Kano State Government said it remained committed to transparency, inclusiveness, and collaboration for peace, progress, and prosperity in the state.
