No fewer than 29 people have died in a boat mishap in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred on September 2, 2025, around 11:30 am.
Confirming the development in a statement on Wednesday, the Director of Information and Special Duties, Niger State Emergency Agency, NSEMA, Dr Ibrahim Hussaini on behalf of the Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said the boat was carrying 90 passengers when the incident occurred.
He explained that the boat capsized after colliding with a tree stump due to suspected overloading.
The boat was conveying passengers, including women and children, traveling from Tugan Sule in Shagunu Ward to Dugga for a condolence visit.
Arah disclosed that rescue efforts led by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, have rescued 50 people with two still missing.
“The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has recovered 29 bodies, 50 people rescued alive, and two individuals are still missing,” the DG NSEMA revealed.
He stated that search operations are ongoing to locate the missing persons.

The Idoma Area Traditional Council, led by the Ochidoma, His Royal Majesty, Agaba-Idu (Dr) Elaigwu Odogbo John, has suspended any form of conferment of chieftaincy titles in Idoma land.
The council said any chieftaincy title conferred in contravention of the declaration will be deemed null, void, and of no effect.
The decision was announced in a statement on Wednesday by the Secretary of Idoma Area Traditional Council, Adegbe Uloko.
According to the statement, the decision became necessary to regulate and safeguard the conferment of titles in the land.
It added that the suspension was also to prevent indiscriminate proliferation and preserve the sanctity of the traditional institution.
“With immediate effect, no Intermediate Area Council or community is permitted to confer, approve, or announce any chieftaincy title of any category until further directive is issued by the Paramount Ruler and the Idoma Area Traditional Council.
”This suspension is binding on all persons, groups, and institutions within Idoma land.
“Such unauthorised conferments shall not receive recognition from the Paramount Ruler, the Idoma Area Traditional Council, or the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers.
“Defaulters may be subjected to further traditional and legal sanctions as deemed appropriate by the competent authorities,” the statement added.
The Ochidoma, who is also the vice chairman of Benue State Area Traditional Council, reaffirmed the Idoma Traditional Council’s commitment to protecting the integrity and heritage of xhieftaincy titles in Idoma land.
The royal father stressed that conferment of titles shall continue to reflect honour, service and cultural value, and would be carried out under lawful authority and due process.

President Bola Tinubu has declared that his government’s bold economic reforms, which aim to restore Nigeria to its enviable position, are yielding fruitful results.
According to him, the country’s economy is now stable and attracting interest from around the world.
The president made this disclosure at the State House when he received the Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Oladunni Olaoye, Orumogege III, in audience with some other royal fathers.
President Tinubu said: “Years of neglect and self-deception, fake records, smuggling, and all of that have denied Nigeria the necessary revenue for progress and development.
“Then we were confronted again with arbitrage trading of currency, an illusion of selling papers, corruption all over the place, and the integrity of the country and its economy being extremely and adversely challenged.
“We had to take those actions. With your prayers, patience, perseverance and great understanding, I’m glad to tell you today that the economy is stabilised. The bleeding has stopped. Haemorrhage is gone; the patient is alive.”
The president also said the establishment of NELFUND was to ensure that no student would drop out because of poverty.
He affirmed that everybody has a right to education as it is the “greatest weapon you can give to human beings against poverty; that’s what we are doing. We have remained aggressive on our infrastructure. And it’s just two years”.
President Tinubu thanked the Soun of Ogbomoso for crediting his administration with the bold decisions taken immediately upon resumption of office.
He noted that the people of Ogbomosoland were already feeling the modernisation and transformation introduced by the monarch, who promised to strengthen traditional institutions.
The president promised to engage the Ministers of Power, Water Resources, Agriculture, and Works to look into the visiting monarch’s requests, stating they can make Nigeria self-sufficient in agriculture.
Earlier, the Soun commended the president for his incredible strides, which “only a bold leader could have recorded. Removing fuel subsidy has shown us that it is the right decision, and we can see the effects”.
Oba Olaoye said the foreign exchange reforms and introduction of NELFUND have made it easier for many students to continue their schooling without considering dropping out.
The royal father also commended the president for awarding the contract for the dualization of the Oyo-Ogbomosho Road, which had been abandoned for decades, pointing out that the road would spur economic activities as a significant gateway to the north.
The paramount ruler, however, requested the president’s intervention in the water and power supply in Ogbomoso, the upgrading of the General Hospital in the town into a Federal Medical Centre, as well as the establishment of a research institute to enhance the development and transformation of the famous ‘Ogbomoso mangoes and cashew nuts’ into a viable agricultural enterprise.
Oba Olaoye thanked the president for appointing Ogbomoso sons to his administration, notably the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, and the DG of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Debo Adedokun.
On the entourage of the Soun of Ogbomosoland were five other kings representing the five councils in Ogbomosoland, namely High Chief Samuel Otolorin, the Areago of Ogbomosoland; HRM, Oba Oyetunji Adeyeye, the Alajaawa of Ajaawa; HRM Oba Bolarinwa Ezekiel Olajide, the Onisapa of Isapa; HRM Oba Babatunde Amao, the Aale Oke-elerin, and HRM Oba Akinola John Akintola, the Olokin-apa of Okin-apa.
Others were High Chief Ogundare Oluwakemi Rebecca, Iyalode of Ogbomosoland; Prof. Sola Adepoju, former DG Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria; Chief Tunji Olaniyi, a businessman, and Alhaji Abdul Ganiyu Atanda Owodunni, the Aare Musulumi of Ogbomosoland.
Also present was the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Chief Sunday Dare, a prominent ‘son of the soil’ who doubles as the Agbaakin of Ogbomosoland.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has withdrawn all park licences in Abuja, asking operators to resubmit documents for fresh screening and possible reallocation, following major policy violations.
Mukhtar Galadima, Director of Development Control, disclosed this during an interview with journalists while explaining the recent demolition of Boulevard Park located in Maitama, Abuja.
He said the FCT minister acted on a memo from the directors of Parks and Recreation and Lands, highlighting serious violations and inadequacies in the management of parks across the territory.
Galadima noted that the directive allowed park operators to resubmit their documents to the Parks and Recreation Department for a fresh review, after which qualified parks might be reallocated.
“If they meet the terms and conditions, they’ll be reallocated. Operators must respond, submit their documents, and if approved, they can regain access to their parks,” Galadima explained.
He emphasised that the move is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step to restore order, legality, and compliance with urban policies guiding park operations in the Federal Capital Territory.
“There’s nothing like witch-hunting. All park allocations were withdrawn over consistent violations. The minister holds authority to regulate land use in the FCT, including public parks,” he stated.
Regarding Boulevard Park’s demolition, Galadima clarified that the park operators were properly notified beforehand and enforcement only followed after all legal requirements had been satisfied.
He said the park had violated its original terms of use, operating activities that directly contravened recreational policies and deviated from the approved land use allocation.
“Boulevard Park was approved for recreation, but its operations violated every part of the policy. What’s happening there is a complete departure from the park’s intended use,” he said.
Galadima added that the Department of Parks and Recreation was mainly responsible for monitoring park activities and ensuring that parks operated within approved regulatory guidelines.
He revealed that all parks were expected to submit conceptual designs for approval before opening, but failure in monitoring had led to widespread abuse and policy breaches.
“The FCT is governed by law, and lawlessness won’t be tolerated. Every park operator must comply with all terms and conditions attached to their allocation,” Galadima stated firmly.
He assured the public that a ministerial committee had been established to review all park allocations and ensured that their usage aligned strictly with the original recreational purposes.
