The National Project Coordinator of Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), Ayuba Yalaks, has said the Ogun State government is fully ready to tackle gully erosion and has paid a counterpart fund contribution of N500m.

Yalaks stated that the fund is one of the major criteria to assessing support fund from European Investment Bank for approved intervention sites, NEWMAP-EIB.

He spoke on Wednesday in Abeokuta, while assessing the level of preparedness and readiness of the state.

DAILY POST reports that the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) in company of the Ogun State Project Management Unit (SPMU) led by the National Project Coordinator inspected the Makalewo and Olorunsogo gully sites, both in Ijebu Ode, the Ojumele gully site in Sagamu and Ishakale gully site in Ado – Odo, Ota local government area of the state amongst others.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the inspection exercise, Yalaks said the state is fully prepared to start operations and assured that the federal government and development partners would provide financial and technical support.

Receiving the team on behalf of the state governor, the Chief Economic Adviser to the governor who doubles as the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo and his counterparts from the Ministries of Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya and Budget and Planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, appreciated the team for the visit, disclosing that the payment of the counterpart funds demonstrated the state’s commitment to helping protect its citizens from the devastating effects of erosion and flooding.

On his part, the State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP-EIB, Ismail Adenuga, explained that the main goal of the visit and the inspection tour was to evaluate the extent of the erosion’s damage and its effects on the environment, communities while providing

long-term solution for the identified sites.

Meanwhile, some residents of the affected areas identified as Messrs Olubajo, Banuso Oyeyinka, Kayode Bello and Funmilayo Egbeleye, begged the government to find lasting solution by properly releasing the floodwaters into appropriate streams to prevent loss of lives and property.

The meeting focused on key infrastructure and economic concerns in the region, including the completion of 17 major road projects and the resumption of oil exploration at Kolmani and Lake Chad frontier wells.

The governors present were Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Bala Muhammad (Bauchi), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa) and Agbu Kefas (Taraba).

Zulum, who chairs the North East Governors’ Forum, urged the president to prioritise the roads, including Kano–Maiduguri Road, Port Harcourt–Jos–Bauchi–Maiduguri Railway line, Bama–Mubi–Yola Road, Wukari–Jalingo–Yola Road, Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Damaturu Road, Damaturu–Geidam Road, Gombe–Potiskum–Damaturu–Biu Road, Maiduguri–Monguno–Baga Road and Maiduguri–Ngala–Bama–Banki Road, among others.

He stressed that completing the projects would boost trade, agriculture, and security across the six states of the region.

The governors also requested renewed federal support for oil exploration in Kolmani and Lake Chad, which they said would help diversify the region’s economy and create jobs.

In his response, President Tinubu assured the delegation of his administration’s commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps and economic development in the North East.

Shittu said this on Wednesday, while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television.

“And today, if you know the amount of votes that will be coming from even the South East for APC, you’ll be shocked,” he said.

The Oyo-born politician also stated that the All Progressives Congress, APC, was gaining ground in the region, pointing to the influence of a key figure of the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, whom he credited with swaying sentiment in favour of Tinubu.

“Even the people from the South East, with the efforts of people like Dave Umahi and so many others, a lot of people are getting convinced to come the Tinubu route,” Shittu added.

Shittu dismissed the notion that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, would remain a factor in the region.

“It doesn’t matter. What is important is for Tinubu to win. Even if to win by 10 votes, I can assure you that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to win,” he stated.

Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, has stated that one of the major factors of road crashes in Nigeria is the human factor.

In an interview on Arise News on Wednesday, he noted that the driving culture of our drivers is a huge factor, adding that most drivers lack the required and adequate training to drive in a large population like Nigeria.

“There are so many factors [to road crashes]. One of the major factors is the human aspect of it. That is the human factor.

“The driving culture of our drivers. They lack the training, the required and adequate training to drive in an environment like Nigeria, where we have a larger population, where there is a little bit of illiteracy, a little bit of poverty, and therefore that really contributes to the growing fatality and injuries that is going on on our roads,” he said.

Asked what exactly the FRSC is doing to face these challenges squarely, especially when it comes to compliance and enforcement, he added:

“Of course, we have been doing our best, pushing for enforcement, pushing for training and retaining of our personnel to be able to sensitize, you know, do public education, because if we are able to get the public education right, telling people what to do, how to obey traffic rules and regulation, how to use the road properly, how to do safe driving, how to imbibe safe driving culture, I think we can get it right right now.

“The government is doing well in terms of funding, in terms of infrastructure, in terms of even using technology. FRSC is using more technology now to be able to drive our processes and also to do the enforcement. What we require more is sensitization. The main issue now is the mixed-loading.

“Mixed-loading is where people, passengers use trucks and animals and goods to travel from one location to the other. Whenever there is a crash, we have several fatalities.

“So the main issue now is for us to be able to continue to educate people, to educate the citizens on the proper use of these roads, and then obeying the traffic rules and regulation.”

Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi, Kwara State, have neutralized one bandit and recovered one AK-47 rifle, ammunition and one motorcycle in an operation along Lema-Daban, Lema road in Edu Local Government Area of the state.

In an encounter in the early hours of Wednesday, troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Patigi, in Patigi Local Government Area of the state, at about 12:10hours conducted an ambush in the Lema-Daban area and subsequently made contact with the miscreants from the ambush site.

In the exchange of fire that ensued, the soldiers overpowered the criminals with superior firepower forcing them to withdraw in disarray.

A statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, in Ilorin read in part, “troops of 22 Armoured Brigade deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Patigi, in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State on fighting patrol within Gbugbu general area have continued to sustain pressure on criminal elements, recording a major success in the early hours of Wednesday, 3 September 2025.

“At about 12:10 a.m, the vigilant troops following a credible human intelligence on movement of armed bandits along Lema – Daban Lema road in Edu LGA of Kwara State, conducted Ambush and subsequently made contact with the miscreants from the ambush site.

“In the exchange of fire that ensued, the soldiers overpowered the criminals with superior firepower, forcing them to withdraw in disarray.

“During a subsequent exploitation along the bandits’ withdrawal route, the troops neutralised one bandit. Items recovered from the operation include one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a motorcycle.”

Captain Stephen, disclosed that the remains of the neutralised bandits have since been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.

The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, praised the vigilance, resilience, and doggedness of the galla t troops, urging them to continue to take the fight to the enemy.

He reaffirmed the Brigade’s determination to intensify operations and employ all legitimate means to eradicate criminal elements while safeguarding the lives and property of law-abiding citizens within its joint operations area.
