The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, has said Governor Hyacinth Alia has not announced himself as Commissioner of Works.

He made the clarification following the assignment of portfolios to newly inaugurated commissioners, with no one assigned to the Ministry of Works.

The development had fuelled rumolrs and speculations that the governor must have assigned the Ministry of Works portfolio to himself.

Kulas in a statement on Thursday said the rumours were unfounded.

“Those who made posts or are sharing this on social media handles should also ensure they delete such falsehood immediately.

“His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has not announced himself as Commissioner for Works. Those peddling unfounded rumors should note and desist.

Sir Kula emphasized the importance of accurate information dissemination especially in matters of governance, and called on the public to focus on supporting the administration’s efforts to drive progress across the state.

No fewer than 175 Ogunteach intern applicants who scored 40 and above in the qualifying test have been screened to fill vacancies in public primary schools across Ogun State.

The state’s SUBEB chairman, Olalekan Ifede, made this known on Thursday while speaking at the secretariat in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He explained that the screening was aimed at verifying the information provided during the application process and urged applicants to be prepared to serve in any part of the state where their services were most needed.

“Be ready to work in rural areas, not just in urban centres. Nobody will be posted outside Ogun State, since it is not in our jurisdiction, but since we are recruiting for our rural schools, it would not make sense to post you where we already have enough teachers,” he said.

Ifede assured the candidates that appointment and resumption letters would be issued before the commencement of the next academic session, adding that interns would be expected to serve for at least two years before being considered for confirmation as permanent teachers.

“Confirmation is not automatic. You will be monitored and supervised by head teachers and officers from the Quality Assurance Department. If you leave a bad impression, you will not be given permanent letters.

“Once you resume, ensure you carry out your duties diligently,” he added.

Also Speaking, Permanent Member II of the Board, Isiaka Aderounmu, emphasised that only candidates with the requisite teaching qualifications would be employed.

The Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, said the exercise would be conducted in batches, urging the applicants to comport themselves as good ambassadors of the State.

Responding, applicants from Yewa South and Ijebu-East Local Government Areas Mrs Ruth Falade and Miss Doris Omouwerah, expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity, pledging to discharge their duties diligently.

A notorious bandit commander, Abu Dan Barka, has been killed alongside four of his men after they were ambushed by rival bandits in Zamfara State.

The attack happened near Magana Mai Rake village, close to Yar Tashar Sahabi in Dansadau district of Maru Local Government Area.

According to sources, who spoke to Zagazola Makama, a security analyst, Dan Barka was well known in Dansadau, operating from his base in Madada village, where he directed raids, kidnappings, and cattle rustling across Maru and surrounding LGAs.

His death highlights the growing infighting among bandit groups in Zamfara. 

In recent months, clashes between rival gangs have intensified as they fight over territory and illegal revenue.

Dansadau has long been a hotbed of banditry, but the frequent internal wars suggest that criminal factions are now turning on one another even as the government continues security operations in the North West.

Following the installation of the first female regent in Aramoko Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area, Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration, has advised female citizens occupying traditional stools to shun sit-tight syndrome and action capable of perpetuating them in their temporary positions.

The Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, gave the charge in Aramoko Ekiti, on Thursday, during a visit to the newly installed Regent, Princess Serifat Owolabi, through a statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje.

Her installation followed the existing vacancy in Alara stool, after the demise of Oba Olu Adegoke Adeyemi, from Arakale ruling house, who joined his ancestors on August 9, 2025.

Addressing the stakeholders, Mrs Afuye, charged Alara-in-council to ensure firm support for the regent, for her to savour successful reign that will benefit the masses.

In the same vein, the government charged the stakeholders and the community to cooperate with the regent, in the overall development of the town, warning that no town can develop under the atmosphere of unrest and multifaceted crises.

She pleaded with the kingmakers and other stakeholders to channel their energies towards producing a monarch in a manner that portrays the fear of the God, to promote peace, progress and unity in the ancient town.

Afuye maintained that a new era has begun in Aramoko Ekiti, following the request of the community for the installation of a female regent, in a clear departure from the old practice, when a male Chief was allowed to oversee the community after the death of their monarch.

“When you made the request, we looked at the reason behind it as a government and it was quickly ratified and approved by the State Executive Council, after thorough and proper scrutiny.

“I plead with the regent to work towards establishing a cordial relationship among the community sons and daughters, as their healthy relationship would promote the development of this town.

“As a government, we believe what should be uppermost to our Regents is how to ensure smooth selection process to produce substantive successors and not how to prolong their stay, because this can cause unnecessary crisis and we don’t expect this to happen”.

Speaking earlier, Princess Owolabi, commended the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for granting approval to the community’s request, which has established a new era in the town.

Princess Owolabi posited that the new traditional norm would further restore the unity and sense of trust among the chiefs in Aramoko community, describing unity as a potent force for development.

She pleaded with the state government to help in establishing a university in Aramoko Ekiti and as well help rehabilitate the roads connecting the town with other neighbouring communities.

Buttressing the Regent, High Chief Diran Adebayo, the Asao of Aramoko Ekiti, saluted the State Government for restoring peace in the interest of the town through swift intervention in the regency controversy.

Adebayo urged the state government to locate a project in the town that would be of lasting memories of the new practice and serve as a mark of respect for the first female regent in the community.

The Lagos State Government has sounded a stern warning over the worsening condition of the Lagos Lagoon, describing it as a looming environmental and social disaster if urgent steps are not taken.

At a press briefing on Thursday ahead of the forthcoming Lagos Waterfront Summit, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Yacoob Dayo Alebiosu, said the lagoon is facing unprecedented threats, from industrial pollution and illegal fishing to rising sea levels and coastal erosion triggered by climate change.

The summit, themed ‘Pressure on the Lagoon: The Lagos Experience’, is scheduled for September 11, 2025. It is expected to bring together stakeholders to examine the crisis facing Lagos’ waterfronts and to design a roadmap for sustainable development.

“The Lagos Lagoon is under intense pressure from both human-driven and climate-related factors. Without urgent and coordinated intervention, this vital ecosystem and the communities it supports may be lost forever,” Alebiosu warned.

According to him, the lagoon has become one of the most polluted water bodies in Africa, receiving more than 10,000 cubic metres of industrial waste daily. These toxic discharges, largely from oil, textile, and manufacturing industries, contain dangerous heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, nickel, and lead.

He explained that the situation is worsened by untreated domestic sewage and agricultural runoff, which continually release harmful organic compounds into the water, posing grave risks to aquatic life and public health.

The commissioner also raised concerns over the overexploitation of aquatic resources. He said unregulated and illegal fishing practices have depleted fish stocks, threatening biodiversity and the livelihoods of local fishing communities who depend on the lagoon for survival.

He noted that human activities such as sand mining, dredging, and indiscriminate land reclamation are altering the lagoon’s natural landscape, causing widespread habitat destruction.

On Lagos’ rapid urban expansion, Alebiosu warned that unchecked development is steadily encroaching on wetlands, natural buffers against flooding.

“Every wetland lost is a flood risk gained,” he cautioned, adding that construction on sensitive floodplains is exposing the city to greater climate and disaster risks.

He also revealed that plastics and other non-biodegradable waste now frequently clog the city’s drainage systems, intensifying the impact of flooding during the rainy season.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has refuted claims by the police that it successfully dismantled one of its camps in Anambra State.

The police had said that the camp allegedly located at Aguluezechukwu, Aguata Local Government Area of the state belonged to
the Eastern Security Network, ESN.

In a statement issued on Thursday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, said the group has no such camps whether in Anambra or anywhere else.

“We have no camp for police to dismantle in Anambra or anywhere else,” the statement said.

The secessionist group went on to say that no evidence has been presented to show that the said camps the security agencies often link to IPOB actually belong to the group.

The group challenged the police to make available to the public or the court credible evidence that such camps indeed existed and belonged IPOB.

According to IPOB, the organization is willing to fund investigative teams to travel to the South-East to “see the truth for themselves”.

“Let it be known: IPOB remains whiter than white. No amount of propaganda can taint our cause, which is rooted in justice, self-determination, and truth,” it added.

Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, Okene Division, have arrested a 23-year-old woman, Charity Williams, and recovered a cache of weapons, cash, and drugs during an intelligence-led raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Oguda village, Kogi State.

According to the State Command Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, the raid at Yuwander Lodge followed credible intelligence that criminal elements were operating from the location.

Items recovered included a locally made Beretta pistol, six rounds of 9mm live ammunition, an axe, hard drugs, four mobile phones, and ₦2,047,300.

The room where the items were found was registered under the name Christopher Kadiri. Police said efforts are ongoing to track down other suspects who fled the scene.

In a separate operation, officers of the Ofu Division raided Ogbakpedo village along the Itobe-Ayingba road after locals reported kidnappers hiding in nearby bushes. Though the suspects escaped, the team recovered a locally made barrel gun, cutlass, and a mobile phone.

Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller G. Dantawaye, commended the operatives for their swift action and restated the Command’s commitment to intensifying the fight against criminality in the state.
