Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has explained that his decision to dissolve the cabinet was intended to facilitate a mid-term review of performance and reposition the administration for improved service delivery.

Bago made this known while speaking to journalists shortly after the valedictory State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Minna.

He explained that the decision became necessary because some cabinet members had exceeded the Key Performance Indicators of the administration, while a few others had not.

According to him, “It was also discovered that some have strength in other areas and my administration needs to be rejigged to bring about the desired growth and development in line with the mission and vision of the New Niger Agenda.”

The governor also disclosed that while some would be reappointed as cabinet members, others would be assigned different portfolios to serve.

He expressed appreciation for their contributions to his administration, saying they have collectively performed well.

Recall that Bago had earlier dissolved his cabinet while retaining his Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Chief of Staff.

It was further gathered that some special advisers were among other principal officers retained by the governor.

The Ogun Tech Community has called on the state government to fulfil its promise of creating a Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.

The community, comprising technology professionals, start-ups, innovation hubs, and digital experts, stressed that the ministry, if established, would implement crucial policies and integrate with federal goals.

In 2023, Governor Dapo Abiodun, during a meeting with permanent secretaries at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, disclosed that his administration would create new ministries of Mineral Resources, Energy, as well as Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy.

The governor added that the Ministry of Youths would be separated from the Ministry of Sports in preparation for the establishment of the Ogun State Sports Commission.

According to the governor, the new ministry would address employment demands and help his administration achieve the objectives set forth in those areas.

However, two years later, the promises are yet to be fulfilled.

President of the tech community, Durosimi Adekunle, in a statement issued on Monday, urged the government to fulfil its promise by renaming the current Ministry of Education, Science and Technology as the Ministry of Education and establishing a standalone Ministry of ICT.

Durosimi stated that Ogun, despite being home to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, as well as Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Shuaib Salisu, lacked the institutional structure to harness ICT opportunities.

He said, “At the national level, Nigeria has already demonstrated leadership through the creation of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, which has driven key policies and frameworks such as the Nigeria Startup Act.

“However, these opportunities are not being properly implemented in Ogun State because there is no dedicated ministry to champion ICT policies and programs. Without a Ministry of ICT, many national frameworks and opportunities risk being diverted or underutilized.

“A Ministry of ICT will allow Ogun State to align with federal initiatives, implement crucial policies like the Startup Act, and fully develop Silicon Hill, unlock opportunities from national digital economy programs, accelerate the adoption of the Nigeria Startup Act and other tech-driven legislation.

“The Ogun Tech Community urges His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, to act decisively in creating the Ministry of ICT and ensure Ogun State fully harnesses the opportunities of the digital economy.”

It said it would not accept any decision by the National Sports Commission to hand over hosting rights of the 2026 National Youth Games to Lagos.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, the functional Director-General of the Commission, Ms Muobo Igalase, said Delta State remains bound by the agreement.

She added that the renaming of the federal ministry to the National Sports Commission does not invalidate the MoU, describing any attempt to strip Delta of the hosting rights as “a breach of trust and disregard for a binding agreement.”

She maintained that Delta remains fully prepared to welcome the rest of the country in September 2026, confident of once again setting the pace in talent discovery.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Sports Commission advised the National Sports Commission to consider Lagos as host of the maiden edition of the proposed National Intermediate Games, a new platform designed to bridge the transition of young athletes discovered at the National Youth Games into senior careers.

She said Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, is well positioned to pioneer the competition just as it did for several national sporting innovations in the past.

According to her, Delta’s contributions to Nigerian sports cannot be undermined, as the state has over the years produced champions across athletics, football, boxing, swimming, and weightlifting, many of whom have gone on to shine on continental and global stages.

“Delta has demonstrated capacity, infrastructure, and passion to nurture raw talents into national treasures. From the school sports festivals to grassroots tournaments, the state has built a system that keeps Nigeria’s sporting dreams alive,” she stated.

The state’s Ministry of Health is also to investigate the extent of danger posed to the health of the indigenes and how they may have been affected by the hydrocarbons.

Abia State Commissioner for Health, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu said that the emergency response of the state government to the water challenge underscored its commitment to the sound health of the people.
