Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP National Legal Adviser, Jacob Mark has slammed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments about the party.

Wike recently countered some key decisions of the party, fueling more disagreements between PDP leaders.

Mark, who spoke with Arise TV on Tuesday, declared that Wike is no longer a member of the opposition party.

According to him, the minister has not been attending meetings or participating in any activities of the PDP.

He said, “We cannot verify which party he belongs to now. He is not a member of the PDP and has not attended any of its meetings. He is not involved in the party’s decision-making process.

“He has not put up any argument or concern about the party, so we are surprised when we see him in the media talking about the party, especially on things that are alien to the party.

“I don’t understand how someone will be playing politics just by imposing decisions on people.”

Academic and economic activities at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, were disrupted on Tuesday as youths of the host communities staged a protest over alleged neglect and non-recognition of their Community Liaison Officer, CLO, Comrade Aniekere Sunday Udoma, by the Rector of the institution, Dr. Moses Umobong.

The protesters locked the school gates and blocked entry, preventing the rector, staff and students from accessing their offices and lecture halls.

They displayed placards with various inscriptions like “Rector Must Go,” “Umobong Respect Our Village Heads,” “Don’t Impose CLO on Us,” “Local Content Is Our Right,” “Where Is Our 2022 Quota for Employment?” and “Governor Umo Eno, Please Come to Our Aid”.

Leading the protest, a youth activist, Comrade Ekikere Simon Iko explained that the people of Ikot Osurua and Atan Ikot Okoro, who claim that the rector had been disrespecting their communities and undermining their rights, have written several letters to the rector since September 24, 2024, but received no response.

He recalled that during a recent visit to their village heads, the rector had promised to respond to their concerns within one week but failed to do so.

According to him, the main grievance is the rector’s decision to appoint a Polytechnic Liaison Officer instead of recognizing the Community Liaison Officer duly chosen by the host communities.

He stressed that the communities have maintained a peaceful and cordial relationship with the institution for over 34 years and only resorted to the protest to press home their demands.

Also speaking, Comrade Iniobong William Ikono, former Youth President of Ikot Osurua, presented copies of letters earlier sent to the rector whom he accused of sidelining the communities, slashing stipends for part-time workers from the host communities from N50,000 to N30,000, and failing to allocate admission slots to indigenes as previously practiced.

Comrade Onoitem Patrick Akpan, former Vice Youth President of Atan Ikot Okoro, also joined his voice to the protest, while the leaders collectively appealed to Governor Umo Eno to intervene, commending his ARISE Agenda and investments in education, particularly at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic.

The rector, Umobong addressed the protesters during which he assured of the recognition of Comrade Aniekere Sunday Udoma as CLO and promised to look into other demands raised.

Following the development, the protesting youths reopened the gates, restoring access to the institution.

French judicial authorities have issued arrest warrants for ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and six of his former officials.

This is in relation to explosions which killed two journalists in Homs.

Marie Colvin, a 56-year-old American and 28-year-old French photographer Remi Ochlik, 28, were killed on February 22, 2012.

The French judiciary is investigating the incident as a potential crime against humanity as well as a war crime.

Assad and his family escaped to Russia after being removed from power by Islamist rebels at the end of 2024.

However, Assad’s precise whereabouts have not been confirmed.

The warrants have also been issued to Assad’s brother Maher al-Assad who was the de facto head of the 4th Syrian armoured division at the time, intelligence chief Ali Mamlouk, and then-army chief of staff Ali Ayoub.

An All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain in Abia State, Eze Chikamnayo, has dragged Governor Alex Otti to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, over the controversial N54 billion meant for school renovation in the state.

Chikamnayo disclosed this while speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.

Apart from the EFCC and ICPC, Chikamnayo also asked the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Finance, Transparency International, and the World Bank to investigate the N54 billion budgeted for school renovation.

He said the failure or refusal to publish the list, location, contractors and pictures of the purported 51 public school projects for which over N54 billion was spent between the first and fourth quarters of 2024 by Alex Otti’s administration is indicative of systemic corruption.

According to him, it is alarming that despite such huge allocations and disbursements, and with almost two years gone, there is no single new smart school project anywhere in Abia state, as widely reported by the government.

“Furthermore, our fact-finding visits to many public schools in Abia State indicate that over 95 percent of them remain in a state of severe neglect—with dilapidated buildings, unfenced compounds, and an absence of learning and teaching equipment.

“These troubling realities stand in stark contrast to the said expenditure recorded in the State Government Budget Performance Report, which is different from other financial inflows recorded under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and various Federal Intervention Programmes.”

While calling on all anti-graft agencies and groups, civil society organisations and leaders of thought to demand accountability from Alex Otti’s administration, the group said, “Already, we have written official letters to the above bodies and other international organisations that specialise in basic education, demanding urgent intervention to rescue the state from any attempt by Mr Alex Otti to use education as a conduit pipe for misappropriation of public funds.

“In the interest of Abia State, Abia children and generations yet unborn, we have dragged the state government, under the Alex Otti-led administration, to all relevant anti-corruption agencies, locally and internationally.

“We have also written to the National Assembly, UNESCO, the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Education, and indeed watchdogs like Transparency International, Amnesty International and others for urgent intervention and sanctions where necessary.

“It is our hope that you will join us in our tireless work in promoting transparency and fighting corruption by lending your voice, platform and influence to ensure that justice is served and accountability is enforced in the governance of Abia State.”

A teenager simply identified as Chagu Terhemen, who was taking refuge with his parents at the Agagbe Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camp in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, has died of snake bite.

The deceased, who was displaced from his village, Tse Abian in Sengev Council Ward of Gwer West LGA, was said to be going to the farm last Friday with his father, Kyomke Mbapupuu, in Gaambe Ushin Council Ward when he suffered the attack.

Raising an alarm over the situation, a fellow IDP, Terna Ibaah, said that the boy’s parents had resorted to traditional treatment but there was no improvement in his condition which deteriorated Sunday afternoon.

“We are afraid of losing the boy; that is why we are raising the alarm because medical personnel only visit the camps between Monday and Thursday,” he said.

Reacting, the Information Officer of Benue State Emergency Management Agency, BSEMA, Tema Ager, revealed that the agency had a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, Makurdi where the victim could be taken for treatment.

He said, “If the victim is a registered IDP, he should be allowed to be taken for treatment at BSUTH. Benue SEMA has an MOU with the hospital where he can be taken for treatment immediately.

He told journalists that the victim was evacuated to the BSUTH on the orders of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management/State Emergency Management Agency, James Iorpuu on Monday, for treatment.
