NBS, INEC Collaborate On Data Collation

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have resolved to collaborate to make the data collated from the commission available to more Nigerians.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the management of the electoral body on Tuesday in Abuja, the Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, said NBS has the mandate to produce data on socio-economic and other areas in the country for the citizens so that government could use the data to plan, make policies, and evaluate policies that are in place.
According to him, “It’s not only data produced from government; our data is also used by private organisations, companies. Our data is being used by even other ministries and departments and agencies of government to plan their own programmes and activities at their respective MDAs.
“So for us to be able to report adequately on all SDG indicators and goals, we need all kinds of administrative data that is produced by public institutions and government agencies.”
Adeniran said it was against this background that NBS met with the INEC management to see how they can collaborate and ensure that they have data produced by INEC on NBS database and make it available for public use.
He stated: “As you all know, the core mandate of the National Bureau of Statistics is to warehouse all official data for the country so that we can make those data available to the public, available to government to do their work, to make programmes, to formulate policies.
“We have been having these collaborations with different agencies. We do a similar thing with the Ministry of Agriculture when we produced the census of Madrid.
“We have similar collaborations and discussions with federal ministries and humanitarian affairs. We have this meeting with the Ministry of Education, and we are developing a system that will allow us to link up with these agencies that are producing official data for countries.
“So that we don’t have to bring flash disk copy data. The kinds of data we are talking about are big data. So there should be a system by which you can link up with your system here and then get the data seamlessly.
“We call it Integrated System of Administrative Services (ISAS) and presently, we have 15 MDAs that are on that platform. That we can get data from them anytime. As the data is changing, we are also receiving them on a daily basis.
‘‘So it’s the same process; it’s the same kind of system that we are going to be working together with INEC to get data from them seamlessly. Not only that, any data that INEC also requires for their planning, for their process, they will also be able to get it easily from MDAs as well.
“We are also going to benefit by having a lot of data that they produce from time to time as we speed their green registration. We are also going to benefit by having a lot of data that they produce from time to time as we speed their CVR registration.
“Now, this data is being put together almost every week. So NBS will have the opportunity to get the latest data from INEC and make it in a format that people will be able to relate to it.”
Earlier, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said the commission has the largest database of adult citizens for the specific purpose of elections and electoral activities in Nigeria protected by law, including compliance with the provisions of the National Data Protection Act.
He added: “We are always willing to partner with national agencies within the confines of the law while maintaining our independence. We regard our partnership with NBS in this context.
“Over the years, stakeholders, especially the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and groups representing the community of persons with disability, have appealed to the commission to improve these facilities by providing electricity and water for ad hoc staff, as well as access facilities such as ramps for citizens with special needs during elections and electoral activities such as voter registration.
“We urge the NBS to add these concerns to the statistics on the state of public facilities that you periodically publish and in your engagement with constitutional bodies such as the National Economic Council (NEC) in which all state governors in Nigeria are members.
“Let these facilities which train our youths at the foundation and intermediate levels of the education system be beneficiaries of the widely proclaimed dividends of democracy.”

Dangote Refinery has said the industrial action embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, would not cause fuel shortage in the country.
A spokesman for the refinery, Anthony Chiejina, gave this assurance on Tuesday.
DAILY POST reports that the strike, which started on Monday and has since drawn support from other unions in Nigeria and abroad, comes as the refinery, the largest in Africa, is hiring its own drivers to deliver gasoline to retailers.
“There is no fuel shortage, everything is going on,” Chiejina said, adding that talks were continuing between the union, the government, and the company.
Recall that prior to last year’s opening of the Dangote refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, Nigeria had to import almost all its petrol despite being a major oil producer.
Meanwhile, critics have pointed to years of neglect and mismanagement of government-owned refineries.
The refinery has driven down prices of petrol for consumers while also shaking up long-entrenched players in Nigeria’s oil sector, marred by decades of corruption.
However, it has also triggered monopoly fears as it becomes a powerful player backed by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
Last month, the refinery was set to deploy a fleet of thousands of trucks powered by compressed natural gas to distribute its petrol nationwide, an initiative that has been delayed due to logistics issues.
NUPENG launched its strike Monday, alleging that Dangote’s new drivers were being hired on the condition they do not join the union, allegations disputed by Dangote.

Governor Uba Sani has vowed that he will pursue justice for the travellers who were killed by a mob at Mangun, in Mangu local government of Plateau State, on their way to a wedding.
The Governor of Kaduna State said that the Allah had placed the protection of lives and property on him, adding that he would not rest on his oars until he discharges this responsibility.
Governor Sani made this pledge in Unguwan Dantsoho, Sabon Gari ward in Kudan local government of Kaduna State, where he performed the ground breaking for the road construction to Hunkuyi Junction, up to Bassawa, linking Kudan and Sabon Gari local governments.
It will be recalled that 13 travellers from Kaduna State were waylaid and killed at Mangun, on their way to a wedding at Quáan Pan local government in Plateau State last June. Eleven of the deceased were from Unguwan Dantsoho village.
The Governor recalled that he had promised to give financial assistance to the families of those who lost their lives and provide houses for them, which he has fulfilled.
He also said that the people had complained of lack of road when he came for the condolence visit, adding that that was why he was performing the ground breaking for the 6 kilometre road.
According to the Governor, Kudan local government is one of the 12 area council that had not benefited from any road construction in the last 12 years, adding that politicians from the area should be ashamed of themselves.
Governor Sani also promised to construct a hospital in Unguwan Dantsoho village and the project will commence as soon as possible. He also pledged to provide financial assistance to women.
‘’Some politicians are good in just appearing on television, claiming that their administration had accrued several billions but there is nothing to show on ground. We are not a government of noise makers.
‘’When I assumed office, I promised to take development to both urban and rural areas because the revenue of Kaduna State does not belong to city dwellers alone,’’ he added.
The Governor commended the people of the area for being peaceful, pleading with them to maintain this attitude because development can only thrive where there is peace.

After four days in captivity, David Ali, a councillor representing Gwantu Ward in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has regained freedom from kidnappers.
The kidnappers who were about five in number and armed with sophisticated weapons, kidnapped Ali late Thursday, when the bandits stormed his residence in Gwantu town and took him away in the presence of his family.
The Chairman of Sanga Local Government, Anto Usman, confirmed that the councillor was released between 8 and 9 p.m. on Monday, and has been reunited to his family.
He lamented the activities of informants aiding criminal groups in the area, leading to pockets of insecurity. He, however, assured that the area is relatively stable with people going about their normal businesses.
Usman further explained that they are trying their best to curb most of the hotspots, through regular security meetings as a means to ensure the sustenance of peace in the local government.
He said, “So far this year, four arrests have been made, and those suspects are facing prosecution.”
He also assured that the security situation is one that they would soon overcome in no distant time, saying that insecurity is inevitable considering the complex nature of human society.
The chairman also commended Governor Uba Sani for strengthening synergy among security agencies across the state, saying the intervention was helping to restore calm in many troubled areas.
The Kaduna State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan could not be reached to comment on the incident.
