Tension is escalating in Tiv communities within Wukari Local Government Area following allegations that the Executive Chairman, Hon. Dauda Agbu Samaila, ordered the exhumation of a recently buried Benue woman, Mrs. Atisaa Injuur Bem.

Mrs. Atisaa, 57, was laid to rest at her ancestral home in Tor-Iorshaer village, located at kilometre 15 along the Wukari–Rafin Kada road.

Her burial, conducted according to Tiv customs, marked the end of a long period of displacement caused by the protracted Jukun-Tiv communal crisis.

However, the funeral was marred by a violent incident and an alleged act of official abuse that has sparked public outcry.

According to the leader of the Tiv IDP community in Wukari, Mr. Peter Achibo, the tragedy deepened shortly after the burial when suspected Jukun youths attacked some mourners who were repairing a vehicle to return to the IDP camp.

During the assault, three mourners were reportedly abducted and taken to nearby Rafin Kada, approximately five kilometres from the scene.

Eyewitnesses said that the abductors passed through a military checkpoint without resistance.

Instead, soldiers allegedly contacted the traditional ruler of Rafin Kada, who is said to have demanded the presence of the abducted victims at his palace.

What followed has drawn widespread condemnation. Mr. Achibo alleges that Chairman Dauda Agbu Samaila imposed a ₦300,000 fine on the grieving family, ordered the arrest of some members, and shockingly, instructed that the body of Mrs. Atisaa be exhumed.

“This is a shameful abuse of power and an attack on our people, both dead and living,” Achibo said.

“These actions, if allowed to stand, will deepen divisions and set a dangerous precedent.”

The development comes just two days after a similar incident in Chiina community, where the grave of one Michael Usange was reportedly destroyed by a local militia led by one Mr. Angyu Yavini.

Witnesses claimed no response or condemnation has come from the local government authorities regarding the act.

In response to these incidents, the Tiv community and IDP leaders have issued the following demands:

Immediate and unconditional release of the detained family members.

Full reversal of the exhumation order.

Arrest and prosecution of individuals responsible for the abduction and grave desecration.

Concrete steps to facilitate the safe return of displaced Tiv persons to their homes in Wukari.

A delegation of former executives of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, on Monday paid a solidarity visit to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, amid the growing security challenges facing Kebbi State.

The visit came on the heels of a brazen attack last Thursday by over 300 armed bandits on a police camp in Makuku village, Sakaba Local Government Area. The attackers, suspected to be cattle rustlers, reportedly carted away eight AK-47 rifles from the police and set a patrol vehicle ablaze after a fierce gun battle.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident in a post on X, said the assailants were moving with stolen cattle believed to have been taken from Niger State and were heading toward Zamfara. Troops of Operation FANSAR YANMA and other security units have since been deployed, with search and rescue efforts underway.

Leading the CPC delegation was Alhaji Umar Shuaibu, former party chairman in Niger State. He was accompanied by Alhaji Ibrahim Waziri (Adamawa), Alhaji Hamidu Haruna (Nasarawa), and George Ikyumbur (Benue), who described the worsening insecurity in Kebbi as deeply concerning and deserving of urgent national attention.

In his remarks, Malami thanked the delegation for their show of support, saying the gesture reflected a shared concern for the well-being of the state and the country at large.

“We are in a defining moment,” Malami said. “The attack on a police facility is not just a threat to security agents, but to the safety and confidence of our rural communities. It is time for unity across political lines to confront this menace head-on.”

He emphasized the need for a united and coordinated response to security challenges, adding that peace and development cannot thrive amid fear and violence.

The delegation echoed similar sentiments, calling for stronger collaboration among state and federal authorities to tackle the growing threats posed by armed groups in the North West region.

The Federal University Dutse (FUD) has decried the constant trespassing, theft and vandalisation of the university’s infrastructure by individuals from its host community.

Prof. Abdulkadim Sabo, Vice Chancellor of the University, made this known at a pre-convocation conference held at the Senate Chamber of the University on Tuesday.

He said that in spite of the university’s corporate social responsibility of extending University services to the host and neighbouring communities, these acts pose a threat to the campus.

‘’In our profound act of corporate responsibility, we extended health services to 17 neighbouring host communities thus shifting from campus-centred care to community-centred impact.

“We provide free obstetric ultrasound scanning to pregnant women, conduct house to house vaccination campaigns and provide mobile outreach to orphanages and correctional centres,” he said.

The vice chancellor added that two emergency hotlines were introduced to guarantee swift ambulance response and round the clock doctor consultation.

He said that some walls are broken by either the community or students living off campus to provide easy access without realising the security implications.

Sabo also lamented how animals gain access to the campus to destroy plants around the institution.

He reiterated the university’s commitment towards providing more security to the campus while appealing to the host community to desist from trespassing.

Meanwhile, Sabo highlighted other challenges faced by the University to include difficulty in meeting its utility bills obligations due to meagre overhead grants and the electricity tariff increase.

He also decried the university’s lack of proper firefighting engine and equipment, which is a basic need of the University.

The vice chancellor revealed that the University was graduating 4,277 students for the 8th and 9th combined convocation on Friday.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that his administration is working with the office of the National Security Adviser to procure suitable surveillance equipment that will enable a prompt response to any security threat in any part of the state.

Governor Abiodun stated this when he hosted the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, and the new Brigade Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Brigadier General Godwin Nwaba, as well as other service chiefs who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He said: “We are working towards identifying suitable surveillance technology that will allow us to have visibility and a view of different areas of our state so that when there is an emergency, we can adequately respond.

“The office of the NSA has been working with us in that direction. We’ve been trying to identify suitable technology so we can deploy it. Very soon, I am sure we are going to decide on that, and it will be procured and deployed to complement your activities.”

The governor stated that although the state is one of the most peaceful in the country, it is imperative for the security agencies to be on top of their game, as there are constant threats that test the will of the state government.

“There is a lot that needs to be done, and we are not going to rest on our oars. Yes, we’ve been referred to as one of the safest, if not the safest, states in Nigeria. However, there is always a continuous test of our will, and we will continue to resist that with maximum reaction. We will not sit by and allow anyone to come here and cause a breach of security in our state,” the governor added.

Abiodun noted the strategic location of the state with an international border and the daily influx of people due to its status as the industrial, educational, religious, and tourism hub of the nation, adding that these factors have placed a heavy burden on the security architecture of the state.

Prince Abiodun said: “When Ogun is peaceful, and when Ogun is prosperous, the entire country is peaceful and prosperous because we are not just the industrial capital of Nigeria; we are also the religious capital, which draws a lot of people to our state.”

The governor attributed the peaceful atmosphere in the state to the inter-agency cooperation among security agencies in the discharge of their duties and appreciated them for collaborating with the state government to ensure the successful hosting of the recently concluded National Sports Festival.

“That Sports Festival was more than just a sports event; it gave us an opportunity to showcase who we really are. A lot of investors are coming into the state to set up their businesses because of that festival. Many conferences are now being brought to our state. I want to thank you for supporting us in that regard,” he said.

He assured that the state would look into how it could solve some of the challenges facing security agencies in the state with a view to addressing them within the limits of state resources.

Speaking earlier, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, noted the unique position of the state as the industrial hub of the nation and disclosed that the Ogun and Lagos State Police Commands are synergizing to nip crimes in the bud, particularly in the border areas.

The Brigade Commander of the 35 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General Godwin Nwaba, stated that his command has intensified patrols in some hotspots in the state, assuring that the men and officers under him would work towards ensuring peace in the state.

Other security chiefs from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Correctional Services, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Federal Fire Service appreciated the state government for past support and called for more assistance, especially in the area of mobility, pledging to work harder for a peaceful state.
