Shettima: Nigeria’s Target As A Nation Is To Attain Food Sovereignty

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has called on global stakeholders to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in rebuilding sustainable and inclusive food systems across Africa, saying true national sovereignty is incomplete without food sovereignty.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu has designed a comprehensive strategy to address food security challenges, which mostly impact vulnerable citizens in conflict-affected regions.
The vice-president spoke during a panel on Country Perspectives: Government-led Strategies and Regional Frameworks during the UN Food Systems Summit +4 (UNFSS+4) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Shettima said President Tinubu’s bold national strategy, including the declaration of a state of emergency on food security and the rollout of systemic reforms, was aimed at transforming agriculture into a resilient, youth-driven, market-based engine of economic growth.
According to him, “Our target is to attain food sovereignty. So long as a nation is not independent in the area of food sovereignty, it remains a non-sovereign nation.”
The vice-president recalled that when President Tinubu assumed office in 2023, the administration met a fragile food system worsened by insecurity, climate shocks and inflationary pressures.
“His Excellency President Tinubu declared a State of Emergency on Food Security, not out of fear, but out of genuine concern for the welfare of our people, especially in conflict-driven environments like the North-east, where Boko Haram was sowing seeds of discord and destruction,” he stated.
Shettima explained that with 25 million vulnerable people across fragile regions, the government adopted coordinated policy measures, including the creation of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU), not to displace existing institutions, but to harmonise all food security interventions.
“We have also initiated food support mechanisms in the North-east and North-west. But we believe charity is not the answer. In Africa, we say that when you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach him to fish, you empower him for life. In our displaced people’s camps, we’re encouraging food production for dignity and resilience,” he stressed.
The vice-president stressed that Nigeria’s agricultural transformation strategy must be market-driven, powered by entrepreneurship and innovation.
His words: “Our belief is that agriculture should be market-driven. The whole mantra is about increasing yields. Entrepreneurial capitalism is embedded in the psyche of the average Nigerian.”
To achieve this, he said the government is investing in improved seeds, extension services, climate-resilient farming, and mechanisation.
“We are reinforcing our extension services so that our farmers can get up-to-date information on rainfall patterns and how to manage the climate shocks ravaging our part of the world,” Shettima further said.
Also, on the margins of the UN Food summit, the vice-president held high-level bilateral meetings with top executives of key global food and development agencies, including the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), QU Dongyu; President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Álvaro Lario, and Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Cindy McCain.
In his meeting with the FAO DG, Shettima sought the organisation’s partnership in reviving the Lake Chad region, enhancing all-year farming and supporting the Green Revolution Project of the Federal Government.
“The revival of the Lake Chad region, which is being threatened by multidimensional challenges such as environmental degradation, climate change, humanitarian crises, and conflict, requires a multi-pronged approach, development initiatives, conflict resolution, regional cooperation and large-scale infrastructure,” he said.
He emphasised the region’s enormous agricultural potential, urging FAO to play a central role in supporting its recovery.
FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, praised the political will of the Tinubu administration, describing it as a clear demonstration of committed leadership to transform Nigeria’s food systems.
He pledged enhanced FAO partnership and technical support.
In a similar meeting with IFAD President, Álvaro Lario,the vice-president underscored the administration’s resolve to empower smallholder farmers, especially youth and women, with access to finance, mechanisation and modern inputs.
“We are focusing on increased productivity, resilience and commercialisation, not handouts,” Shettima noted, adding that Nigeria’s plan includes scaling up existing IFAD-supported projects to reach more rural communities.
The vice-president also held talks with WFP Executive Director, Cindy McCain, during which he commended the organisation’s longstanding humanitarian interventions in Nigeria.
Shettima, however, reiterated the administration’s shift towards sustainable solutions.
On his part, McCain pledged WFP’s continued commitment to working with the Nigerian government in areas such as school feeding, nutrition and support for displaced communities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned against multiple and underage registration in Kebbi ahead of the August 18 commencement date for Continuous Voters Registration, CVR.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Kebbi, Abubakar Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo, gave the warning while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.
He warned that “The INEC will not condone multiple registrations, registration by proxy, under-aged registration and all other illegal forms of getting registered as the commission begins CVR on Aug.18.
“INEC in her efforts to serve Nigerians better will commence the continuous registration of eligible voters for online pre- registration on the said date.
“In-person registration will commence on August 25. Nigerians who have turned 18 are now eligible to obtain their cards either via the online registration or present themselves to our Local Government Area offices of their residence for the exercise,” he said.
Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo added that eligible voters, who had lost their voter cards, misplaced their cards or whose cards were mutilated or changed addresses or residences could also present themselves for the physical registration.
“Those whose voter cards are defaced and those who wish to correct their names or date of birth can also present themselves at any of our Local Government offices of their residence for the registration.
“The registration will be conducted at all INEC Area offices of Kebbi State from 9 a.m to 3p.m daily except on weekends and public holidays,” he said.
Sarkin-Pawa-Dambo also revealed that the INEC registered 2,032, 41 eligible voters before the 2023 general elections.
“Out of the registered number, 1,096,449 are male representing 54 per cent and female registration stands at 935,592 and represents 46 per cent.
“The total number of Registration Areas (RA) stands at 225 and the total number of Polling Units stands at 3,743.
“The state has three senatorial zones and nine federal constituencies as at 2023. 1,847,752 have collected their Permanent Voter Cards representing 97 per cent.
“Though a negligible number of these voter cards are lying down in our offices, we encourage the owners to present themselves for the collection of their cards at a date to be announced later,” the commissioner said.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has issued warning to traders across Lagos State to cease artificial price inflation and ensure the authenticity and safety of their goods.
Mr Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, gave the directive at a Market Engagement Forum organised by the commission in Lagos.
Bello, represented by Mrs Bridget Etim, Principal Consumer and Business Education Officer, FCCPC, underscored the commitment of the commission to fostering fair competition and safeguarding consumer rights, as enshrined in the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, FCCPA, 2018.
He reminded all businesses, irrespective of their scale or operational setting, that they are subject to the provisions of this law.
Bello said that findings from recent FCCPC operations included the discovery of expired rice re-bagged and sold as premium brands at Daleko Market.
He condemned such “wrong and illegal” practices, emphasising the inherent risks to public health and the damage inflicted on the reputation of honest traders.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, FCCPC’s intensified engagement also extended to major markets in Lagos, namely Mile 12 and Alaba.
At Mile 12, Lagos’s largest food hub, the commission tackled issues of tampered scales, under-weighing, the repackaging of spoilt produce, and suspected price-fixing of essential staples like rice, pepper, and yam.
Similarly, at Alaba International Market, a prominent electronics hub, the FCCPC addressed concerns related to the sale of counterfeit appliances, misleadingly labeled “Tokunbo” (fairly used) goods.
Others include false warranty claims, and coordinated price-fixing of electronics such as televisions, generators, and phones.
“These are not minor issues. They affect household income, endanger consumer safety, and erode public trust.
“They violate key provisions of the FCCPA 2018, which prohibit deceptive practices and unfair pricing,” the FCCPC boss said.
He stressed that such violations not only harm the integrity of the market but also disadvantage honest traders who adhere to ethical practices.
While acknowledging the pressures faced by traders, including rising operational costs, Bello reiterated the FCCPC’s dual mandate: consumer protection and the amplification of genuine business concerns to relevant agencies.
He called for a collaborative approach with market leaders to establish new standards of integrity, where fair competition thrives and consumers can shop with confidence.
Bello urged traders to always ensure honesty and respect in their dealings with customers, to promptly address consumer concerns and complaints.
According to him, FCCPC is optimistic that this renewed engagement will lead to a shared vision with market associations to eradicate all forms of abusive and deceptive practices.
Speaking at the forum in Mile 12, Alhaji Shehu Jibril, Chairman, Mile 12 Market, that farmer security is critical for national food security and for them to be able to cultivate and harvest without facing ransom threats.
He called for investment in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks dedicated to transporting perishable items, noting that using the same trucks for chemicals and food is unsafe and harmful.
Jibril stated that the excessive cost of over N150,000 to transport goods from Kano to Lagos, driven by multiple taxes, severely impedes the movement of goods.
He appealed for government grants to support struggling traders, especially in large markets like Mile 12 Market, noting that most traders lack capital and need funding to sustain food supply chains.

It said the strike became necessary following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on 14 July, 2025, demanding improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses across federal health institutions.
Speaking on Tuesday, the National Chairman of the union, Morakinyo Rilwan, stated that the Federal Government failed to engage meaningfully with the association during the window provided.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the minister said Tinubu has directed his team to ensure the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other bodies in tertiary institutions across the country do not embark on strike.
“The President has directed that not again in this country will ASUU, or tertiary institution trade unions go on strike,” he said on the current affairs show.
He said the government is having a regular meeting with ASUU, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.
“It is just not promising, there has to be a lot of relationship building. Beyond that, the government is meeting its obligation with these unions.

The House of Representatives Committee on China-Nigeria Parliamentary Relations has launched an investigation into a viral video showing some Nigerians in the Central African Republic, CAR, alleging abandonment and passport seizure by a Nigerian businessman purportedly linked to a Chinese company.
It will be recalled that in the widely circulated video, the affected Nigerians expressed their grievances, claiming they were hired by a purported Chinese company in Nigeria, only to be taken to the CAR, where they were left without pay and had their international passports withheld.
DAILY POST reports that the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria had also launched an investigation into the report.
However, in a statement by the committee’s Chairman, Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, the Committee assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to uncover the truth behind the allegations.
“The Committee regrets the unfortunate situation the Nigerian workers are being subjected to in CAR and assures that a comprehensive investigation is currently ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to their ordeal,” the statement read.
The Committee clarified that Abdulrauf Ademola, the businessman accused in the video, has refuted the allegations of passport seizure, unpaid salaries, and abandonment, stressing that he is not affiliated with the Chinese Embassy or the China General Chamber of Commerce.
“His actions or inactions should not be linked to the embassy or Chinese enterprises doing their legitimate businesses in Nigeria,” the statement noted.
The Committee stated that China-Nigeria relations have flourished over time, yielding significant results across key sectors, including trade, investment, infrastructure, technology, human capital development, and people-to-people partnerships.
It urged the media and the public to report on China-Nigeria relations in a fair, balanced, and truthful manner, reflecting the mutual solidarity between the two nations.
