The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of 14 persons in connection with Sunday’s protest in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

According to the police, the protest, which began at Wurukum Roundabout as a demonstration against rising insecurity in the state, was later hijacked by hoodlums who attempted to disrupt public peace.

The Benue State Police Command said the situation escalated when the demonstrators refused to be addressed by the Deputy Governor of the state, Barr. John Ode, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, who visited the scene to appeal for calm.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, police operatives were forced to deploy non-lethal crowd control measures, including smoke and water cannons, to disperse the violent elements and ensure the safe evacuation of the Deputy Governor.

“No casualties or injuries were recorded during the operation,” the statement said.

However, in a separate incident later that day, a group of alleged sympathizers of the protest blocked a road in Apir, on the outskirts of Makurdi.

They reportedly intercepted a truck and set it ablaze with the driver trapped inside.

The driver’s identity remains unknown.

The police confirmed that fourteen suspects have been apprehended in connection with the violent incidents and will be prosecuted. Investigations are ongoing to identify other culprits behind the arson and disruption.

“The Benue State Police Command supports lawful civic engagement but will not tolerate violence, destruction of property, or threats to public safety,” the statement read.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has said his administration will sanction radio stations operating in the state for defying the broadcasting code.

This is as the governor warned that anyone found culpable of promoting violence in the state will be arrested by law enforcement agencies and dealt with according to the law.

Governor Adeleke gave this warning in a statement signed by Olawale Rasheed, his spokesperson, on Sunday in Osogbo.

The statement said the warning became necessary following concerns over incitement to violence and repeated breaches of the broadcasting code by the concerned radio stations.

According to the statement, “Some stations have allowed guests to make inflammatory statements capable of causing unrest. These stations also deny fair hearing to affected individuals, this violating professional standards.

“These actions are dangerous and a threat to peace and stability in the state.”

The governor revealed the has directed the Commissioner for Information to summon General Managers of the affected stations immediately.

“This is a prelude to more serious actions if violations continue unchecked. While press freedom is guaranteed, it must be guided by responsibility and ethics,” he stressed.

Governor Adeleke also warned opposition politicians against inciting violence over the recent Appeal Court ruling.

He accused them of attempting to take the law into their hands through inviting and provocative public statements.

“Anyone found promoting violence will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies,” the governor warned.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command has deployed personnel across the local government secretariats in the state.

The deployment, DAILY POST gathered, is to forestall breakdown of law and order in the light of the Appeal Court Akure Division judgment of Thursday, June 12, 2025.

DAILY POST also gathered that a fresh crisis is brewing in Osun State as local government executives of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lay conflicting claims to the control of council areas, following the Appellate Court decision

Confirming the deployment, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said, “Our own is to provide security, to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order, which we have put in place, we are not into politics, we are just to ensure safety.

The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Funds Trust (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter has sounded the alarm on the growing abuse of court orders to obstruct the dispensation of justice in Nigeria, and provide immunity to alleged human rights abusers across the country.

In a statement issued by the Country Director, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the IHRC-RFT expressed concerns about an emerging and devious trend in Nigeria, whereby perpetrators of injustice or cruel treatment, swiftly procure restraining court orders stopping law enforcement agencies from arresting or effecting investigation of an alleged perpetrator of human rights abuse.

“This trend impairs the operational latitude of security agencies and increasingly undermines public confidence in the Nigerian judicial system.” the statement read.

“Even officials within the judiciary and security sectors have complained about the misuse of the statutory instruments to stifle the cause of justice.”

While reiterating their respect for the judiciary and the role of court orders in a democratic society, IHRC-RFT said, court orders must not become instruments of oppression and impunity.

“We are not calling for the abolition of court orders,” IHRC-RFT stated. ” Rather, we are calling for reasonable safeguards to see that such orders are issued in accordance with principles of fairness, justice, and transparency to ensure they do not infringe upon the rights of victims or obstruct legitimate law enforcement.”

The Commission referenced elements of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which Nigeria is a signatory to, in its reasoning.

The equitable principle of law is outlined in Article 7, which states “Everyone is equal before the law and is entitled without any discrimination to equal protection before the law.”

Article 8 pertains to the individual’s right to seek remedy through the competent national tribunals when acts contravene rights deemed fundamental.

Given the violation, IHRC-RFT called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, t
members of the National and State Assemblies, governors, and all relevant authorities to investigate the matter without delay and implement systematic change. The entity urged legal and judicial actors to ensure that court orders are not procured to protect an individual who has assumed acknowledgement of accountability, but rather to achieve what are natural justice principles and human rights.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday in Makurdi, ZAPA President, Mr. Fanen Mondo, decried what he described as a “wave of brutal, coordinated assaults” by armed herders — some of whom, he alleged, are foreign mercenaries — in areas including Chito (Ukum), Tor Donga (Katsina-Ala), Turan (Kwande), Aôndoana (Gwer West), Yelwata (Guma), Apa, and Agatu.

Mondo urged Governor Alia to not only declare the emergency but to personally lead the security response and openly engage the Federal Government on the worsening situation.

In the face of fresh violence that has left several communities in Benue State shattered, the Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), Major General Moses Gara, stepped into the heart of the crisis on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

General Gara visited Yelwata Village, Tse-Mtwenem, Daudu, and Iye Village—areas recently rocked by brutal attacks.

According to a statement released by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS Headquarters, the visit was part of the military’s broader response to the escalating tension in the region.

During his meetings with traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents, General Gara called the recent attacks “barbaric and unacceptable,” and made it clear that the military would go after the perpetrators without hesitation.

“Today, I stand not just as a Commander, but as a fellow Nigerian who understands your pain and suffering. The Nigerian security establishment is with you.
