Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Sunday declared that his mission to address cultism in the state is divinely inspired.

He made the statement during a special thanksgiving mass held in honour of the second anniversary of Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, which also coincided with the celebration of Father’s Day.

Speaking at the event, Governor Okpebholo remarked that confronting cultism is not solely a matter of physical strength, emphasizing that he believes his role in the fight stems from a higher calling.

“I want to tell you people that God is here. That’s why if it’s somebody with muscles, with strength to fight cultism, I don’t think I would have been the one. But God has sent me to do that.” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of Father’s Day, the governor likened the commitment and compassion required of fathers to the qualities necessary in leadership. “It takes courage and empathy to be a father. I urge fathers to continue to love and guide their children, as they are blessings from God,” he stated.

Speaker Agbebaku expressed gratitude to guests at the event, particularly Governor Okpebholo, for attending despite his official obligations. He also reiterated the House’s intention to maintain a productive and collaborative relationship with the executive arm.

“Your Excellency, as a house, we want to work with you. We want to form synergy with you to take Edo to the next level. We are very ready to work with you to make sure our people have the best in Nigeria,” Agbebaku stated.

Investigators in India have recovered the second black box from the Air India Boeing 787 that crashed in Ahmedabad last Thursday, killing at least 279 people, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The cockpit voice recorder, CVR, which captures conversations and sounds from the flight deck, was retrieved by search teams, according to PK Mishra, a senior aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The flight data recorder, FDR, which contains detailed technical data on the aircraft’s performance, was recovered a day after the crash.

The London-bound flight went down shortly after takeoff, slamming into a residential area in the city of Ahmedabad.

Among the 242 passengers and crew on board, only one passenger survived. Authorities also reported at least 38 fatalities on the ground due to the impact.

“The AAIB has launched a detailed investigation, and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel probe under international protocols since the aircraft is American-made,” Mishra said.

“Officials confirmed that the Flight Data Recorder, FDR, and Cockpit Voice Recorder, CVR, have been located and secured.”

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has described the ongoing attacks on some parts of Benue State as possible reprisal attacks launched by suspected armd herders using known routes from neighbouring Nasarawa State.

Alia was responding to a comment made by President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, who described the attacks in Benue as reprisals.

Speaking on the security situation in an interview with Channels Television, Alia confirmed that the attackers were not only operating from outside the state but had also found hideouts within Nasarawa territory.

“When you come to the Nasarawa axis, that is where we are having the challenges. Yes, we’ve confirmed that a number of them are hiding within Nasarawa State,” he said.

According to him, there are well-known routes used by the armed men to move in and out of Benue, especially when they are dislodged from other locations.

“So, anytime they are driven out from one area, they simply shift to another. What we’re witnessing today, if someone describes it as reprisal attacks, we wouldn’t entirely disagree,” he said.

“I spoke with the Governor of Nasarawa to see how we could synergize. I wanted to know if he had access to any fresh intelligence that we might not have here in Benue, which we could act upon.

“He told me he had received information that the terrorists had passed through his territory, entered Yelewata to launch the attack. He also said that one woman was attacked and macheted in Nasarawa State,” Alia added.

The quake hit shortly before noon and was centered about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from Callao, a port city adjacent to the capital, Lima, the National Seismological Centre said.

The US Geological Survey measured the tremor at a magnitude of 5.6.

Officials confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

The National Police reported that one man was killed in Lima when a wall collapsed onto his car. The Emergency Operations Centre also confirmed that 36 people were injured in the capital.

President Dina Boluarte urged citizens to remain calm and reassured the public that no tsunami threat existed for the Pacific coastline.

Local television network Latina aired footage of landslides occurring in several parts of Lima. The earthquake also led to the suspension of a major football match in the city, and subway services were temporarily halted as a precaution.

Peru, home to approximately 34 million people, lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The country averages more than 100 detectable earthquakes each year.

The most recent major quake before Sunday’s occurred in 2021 in the Amazon region, registering a magnitude of 7.5. That tremor left 12 people injured and destroyed over 70 homes.

Peru’s deadliest recorded earthquake occurred in 1970 in the Ancash region, claiming nearly 67,000 lives.
