Following the recent attacks in several communities within Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has convened a peace meeting with stakeholders in the locality.

DAILY POST recalls that unidentified gunmen had attacked Hurti, Ruwi, Josho, Daffo, Manguna, and other communities in the area.

As a result of these attacks, over 50 residents lost their lives, more than 300 houses were destroyed, and over 1,000 persons were displaced.

The recent violence has been described by Governor Caleb Mutfwang as a coordinated crime allegedly orchestrated by conflict profiteers, rather than a farmer-herder clash.

Speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting on Monday in Bokkos, the COAS stated that the gathering formed part of the Nigerian Army’s non-kinetic approach to fostering peaceful coexistence in Bokkos and surrounding areas.

He urged residents of the affected communities to embrace tolerance, forgiveness, and enduring peace.

Oluyede said: “I wish to assure you that our troops will continue to remain neutral, professional, and fair to all, regardless of tribe or religion.

“I also wish to assure you that those responsible for these heinous crimes will be apprehended and brought to justice.”

He further noted: “Even if a battalion of troops were deployed to Bokkos, we might still fall short of achieving the desired peace.

“The security forces simply do not have the numbers to be present in every location. We, as a people, must learn to coexist peacefully.

“Peace in Bokkos and Plateau State is indeed possible, but only if we all commit to renouncing violence and embracing unity.”

The army chief further pledged to deploy additional security personnel to the affected communities to ensure the safety of lives and property.

Also speaking, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, Commander of Operation Safe Haven, OPSH, and General Officer Commanding, GOC, 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Rukuba, described the engagement with stakeholders as timely, given the escalating security challenges in the area.

He promised enhanced collaboration with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful farming season in the region.

Alo Raymond, the District Head of Manguna, urged security agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the recent attacks. He alleged that the continued assaults on these communities were motivated by attempts at land grabbing.

The district head called for the deployment of more security personnel and vowed that the people of Manguna would not abandon their ancestral lands.

He also appealed to all levels of government to support the displaced persons with food supplies and other essentials necessary for restoring their livelihoods.

The meeting was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community heads, and representatives of youth and women’s groups.

Saudi Arabia has announced a change to its visa policy, restricting nationals from 14 countries.

Nigeria was listed among the countries restricted from applying for new short-term visas starting from April 13, 2025.

Other countries affected include Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, India, Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The ban affects multiple visa categories like business visas, both single and multi-entry, tourist e-visas, and family visit visas.

A notice by Saudi authorities said Nigerians currently holding valid Saudi visas may continue travelling to the Kingdom until 13 April 2025 but must exit no later than 29 April.

“After this deadline, affected individuals face potential penalties, including a possible 5-year ban from entering the country.”

The Saudi government explained that the measure is “part of ongoing efforts to regulate travel ahead of the upcoming Hajj season.”

According to Gulf News report, the latest restriction comes into effect over logistic challenges and overcrowding experienced during the previous Hajj season, when a lot of pilgrims used visas not meant for pilgrimage purposes.

In February 2025, Saudi authorities had temporarily suspended one-year multiple-entry visas indefinitely and restricted travel from these 14 countries to single-entry visas valid for only 30 days.

Also, Saudi authorities gave an update on guidance regarding Umrah travel logistics.

The issuance of Umrah visas will begin each year on the 14th of Dhu Al Hijjah and conclude by the 1st of Shawwal.

“The Kingdom has repeatedly emphasised the importance of obtaining the appropriate visa type for religious travel and warned of legal consequences for those who fail to comply,” according to Saudi authorities quoted in Gulf News

A mild drama took place on Monday at the Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, when a complainant, Mrs Chinyere Ejike, told the court to continue to remand her husband, Livinus Ejike, over alleged assault.

NAN reports that Ejike was arraigned on February 5 on a three-count charge of assault on his wife, threat to her and their children, and causing breach of peace.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Lateef Layeni, had granted him bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The defendant was, however, unable to meet his bail conditions and consequently remained in custody.

The magistrate adjourned the case until March 5 for mention but on the adjourned date, the investigating police officer was absent.

The case was again adjourned until Monday, April 7 for mention.

On Monday, today, the defendant was absent.

The prosecution informed the court that he could not be produced due to logistics issues.

The magistrate then asked the complainant if she was willing to forgive her husband to end the case.

In response, the complainant told the magistrate to continue to keep her husband in custody.

She told the court that her husband was of no relevance to her.

According to her, the defendant has been wicked to her and has beaten her up many times.

Consequently, the court further adjourned the case until May 19 for mention.

According to the police, the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 3 at the illogbo area of Ojo.

The prosecutor, ASP Simon Uche, alleged that the defendant assaulted his wife by beating her, adding that he threatened her and their children with a knife.

Uche also alleged that the defendant caused a breach of peace by throwing his wife’s property out of their home.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 58, 166 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

He stressed that revolution is a prerequisite for development.

Traoré said this during a flag-raising ceremony at the Koulouba Palace last week.

He said, “If we have to say it loud and clear here, we are not in a democracy; we are in a popular, progressive revolution.

“We must necessarily go through a revolution, and we are indeed in a revolution. So this question of democracy or libertinism of action or expression has no place. As much as you think you are free to speak and act, the other is also free to speak and act, and there we end up with a society of disorder.”

He strongly condemned the notion that democracy is a prerequisite for development, saying it is “false” to believe any country has developed under a democratic system.

“It is impossible to name a country that has developed in democracy. Democracy is only the result,” Burkina24, a local media outlet, quoted him.

DAILY POST reports that Traore ceased in September 2022 and has since led Burkina Faso.

The development comes at a time when the ‘Take it Back’ movement, led by activist Omoleye Sowore, kicks off another round of protest across major cities in Nigeria on April 7, 2025.

Sowore had been critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government and vociferous in his stance on revolution.

The World Trade Organization, WTO, on Monday, said Canada has launched a complaint over the steep tariff imposed on car imports by US President Donald Trump.

The WTO stated that Canada also requested its dispute consultations with the United States, concerning US measures imposing a 25 percent duty on automobiles and automobile parts from Canada.

DAILY POST reports that the request was filed last Thursday, the day the additional levy came into effect for all cars and car parts not manufactured in the United States, but it was only circulated to WTO members on Monday.

The Canadian government, in the request, charged that the tariffs were inconsistent with the United States’ obligations under international trade laws.

Canada immediately hit back on the levies, saying Thursday that it would impose a 25 percent tariff on tens of thousands of vehicles imported from the United States.

Since the second return of Trump to the White House last January, he has unleashed a barrage of tariffs, and last week hit countries and goods around the world, sending markets crashing.

Canada was largely spared from the sweeping global tariffs Trump announced last Wednesday, as Washington granted an exemption to goods compliant with the US-Canada-Mexico free trade agreement, which covers most products.

However, Canada, one of America’s largest trading partners, is still facing tariffs on steel, aluminum and other products, in addition to the levies on automobiles.
