The Forum of Economic Rights Activists (FERA) has tackled Labour Party, LP, 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent comments on the state of the Nigerian economy.

FERA, in a statement by its President,
Dr. Moses Okino, faulted Obi’s recent appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he criticized the Federal Government’s economic policies.

Describing Obi’s criticism of the government’s reforms as “amateurish” and “dishonest”, FERA said the LP presidential candidate deliberately distorted facts to suit his own narrative.

The group disagreed with Obi on his claim that corruption has not been effectively tackled. According to FERA, the abolition of the petrol subsidy is a significant milestone in the fight against corruption.

Parts of the statement read, “The Forum of Economic Rights Activists (FERA) is not surprised at Peter Obi’s posturing.

“Our counsel to those who still believe the rants of the Labour Party’s candidate is for them to step back and critically assess the situation.

“It becomes obvious that Peter Obi is no longer able to brand himself as a businessman, neither can he be correctly described as a politician anymore since he has done his best to destroy the Labour Party – the late Doyin Okupe gifted Nigerians the revelation that Peter Obi only used the Labour Party as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).

“It is on this note that we caution Peter Obi to explore other options for seeking relevance ahead of the 2027 General Elections and stop his attempt at revisionism.”

It would be recalled that Obi had accused the President Bola Tinubu administration of being ineffective in implementing economic policies.

Obi also criticised Tinubu’s decision to float the naira in the absence of productivity, while also increasing the country’s debt profile and the cost of debt servicing.

He asserted that if he were the President, the country would have experienced drastic positive changes in two years as he would have injected money into productivity that would lead to a more productive and sustainable economy.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that the United States will know in a matter of weeks if Russia is serious about peace with Ukraine, after European allies accused Moscow of stalling over the Trump administration’s call for a ceasefire.

President Donald Trump, who has promised to bring a quick end to the three-year-old war, has for weeks said he believes Russia’s Vladimir Putin is committed to peace.

The White House has reportedly grown wary of Putin’s intentions in recent days, although Trump continues to signal publicly his belief that Putin wants to end the war.

“We will know soon enough, in a matter of weeks, not months, whether Russia is serious about peace or not. I hope they are.

“If this is dragging things out, President Trump’s not going to fall into the trap of endless negotiations about negotiations.

“We’re testing to see if the Russians are interested in peace. Their actions – not their words, their actions – will determine whether they’re serious or not, and we intend to find that out sooner rather than later,” Rubio said.

DAILY POST reports that Moscow rejected a US proposal in March for a full 30-day ceasefire after Ukraine said it would agree.

The both warring sides then agreed to a limited pause in attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, which both accuse the other of violating.

Meanwhile, Washington said it was still in talks with both sides.

Israeli military on Friday said its troops moved into northern Gaza, taking control of more territory around the edge of the enclave, days after the government announced plans to seize large areas with an operation in the south.

According to a statement, soldiers carrying out the operation in Shejaia, a suburb east of Gaza City in the north, were letting civilians out via organised routes, as troops moved in to expand the area defined by Israel as a security zone in Gaza.

Images going viral on social media showed an Israeli tank on Al Muntar hill in Shejaia, in a position that gave it clear sight over Gaza City and beyond to the shoreline.

According to the United Nations, as the Israeli forces moved in, hundreds of residents had already left on a day earlier, carrying belongings or loading them on to vans or donkey carts, after the military issued the latest in a series of evacuation warnings that now cover around a third of the Gaza Strip.

DAILY POST reports that Israel resumed its operation in Gaza with a heavy series of air strikes on March 18 and sent troops back in after a two month pause during which 38 hostages were returned in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

The United Nations Humanitarian Agency, OCHA, said over the past two weeks, more than 280,000 people have been displaced in Gaza, adding to the misery of families that have already been displaced multiple times over the past 18 months.

In Gaza City, local people said Israeli strikes had hit a water desalination plant, located east of the Tuffah neighbourhood, that was vital in providing clean drinking water.

On the southern edge of Gaza, Israeli troops have been consolidating around the ruins of the city of Rafah and the OCHA says 65% of the enclave is now within no go areas, under active displacement orders or both.

Activist politician, Omoyele Sowore has said former Nigerian First Lady, Patience Jonathan should be in prison.

Sowore was reacting to the imprisonment of 15 domestic staff of Mrs Jonathan for over six years.

The 15 staff members were jailed for over six years due to alleged theft of Mrs Jonathan’s jewelries reportedly worth over N750 million.

While calling for concerted efforts to get them released, Sowore wondered how the former First Lady got the funds to purchase such jewelries.

Posting on his Facebook page, Sowore wrote: “Former Nigerian first lady Patience Jonathan has detained 15 domestic staff members for over six years while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing N750m worth of jewelry from her.

“Where did she she get the funds to purchase jewelry valued at N750 million?

“Nigeria appears to be the only country where alleged public treasury looters have the audacity to arrest others accused of stealing a portion of the funds they themselves looted from the public treasury.

“We must do everything to get them released from unjustified prosecution. Patience Jonathan should be the one in prison.”
