This move reflects the growing prominence of Hausa, which is already widely spoken across the country, particularly in the Zinder, Maradi, and Tahoua regions.

With approximately 26 million people in Niger, the majority are fluent in Hausa, while only around 13 percent, or about three million people, speak French.

The new charter not only solidifies Hausa as the national language but also acknowledges nine other local languages, including Zarma-Songhay, Fula, Kanuri, Gourmanche, and Arabic, as the spoken languages of Niger.

This change comes on the heels of a national meeting held in February, where the military government garnered additional support.

At the event, General Abdourahamane Tiani, the leader of the junta, was granted approval to remain in power for another five years.

Bashiru Lamidi Apapa has announced that he has taken over the leadership of the Labour Party following the Supreme Court judgement that sacked Julius Abure as the national chairman of the opposition party.

Apapa made this declaration at a press conference on Wednesday.

He cited the recent April 4, 2025, Supreme Court judgement that nullified Abure’s leadership as a reason for his decision.

Apapa announced that the National Working Committee of the party as of 2022 will meet next week, Monday, 14th April 2025.

“Following the dismissal of the cross appeal filed by the ousted former National Chairman Bar Julius Abure, also by the Supreme Court on April 4th, 2025, what this means is that all actions and decisions taken by Julius Abure since April 4th, 2023, are null and void.

“Following the decision of the Supreme Court on setting aside all judgements that recognise the leadership of Julius Abure as National Chairman, I, ALH BASHIRU LAMIDI APAPA, the most senior deputy national, and in consonance with our party constitution, Article 14 2(a)(b), hereby take over the running of the affairs of our great party with effect from today, Wednesday, the 9th day of April 2025, in an acting capacity, and Alh Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary,” he stated.

“My leadership hereby calls on all members of the Labour Party that the National Working Committee of our party as of 2022 will meet next week, Monday, 14th April 2025, to announce our plans, which will include zoning the position of National Chairman to the North and National Secretary to the South.

”My leadership will also take proactive steps to resuscitate the moribund Board of Trustees and make it functional.

He added, “The National Working Committee members listed below are hereby put on notice about the NWC meeting coming up on Monday next week, where we will immediately set in motion the conduct of Ward Congresses, Local Government Congresses, State Congresses, and National Convention, where every member of our party shall have the right to participate, provided you are a financial member.”

The management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, has allegedly detained a mother and her newborn baby over the non-payment of N330,000 medical bills.

DAILY POST reports that the husband and father of the detainees, Mr Umoru Imokha Abdullahi, disclosed this while soliciting financial support from members of the public, including the Edo State Government and kindhearted Nigerians.

Abdullai, while narrating his family’s ordeal in the hospital, said his wife gave birth through the Cesarean Section (CS) three weeks ago.

The indigene of Agenebode in Etsako East Local Council of Edo State lamented that his wife and newborn baby have been detained on account of the N330,000 medical bills.

He explained that his wife had surgery on March 20, 2025, during the delivery, and was discharged on March 27, a week later, with a total bill of N380,000.

He added that he had earlier paid a deposit of N50,000 before admission and N150,000 after the CS, making a total of N200,000 out of the total bill.

According to him, “While I was seeking the balance of N180,000, the UBTH came up with an additional cost of N150,000 for the delay in coming up with the balance.

“When I couldn’t pay the N380,000 on March 27, they demanded an additional N10,000 per day at the hospital. They added another N150,000 which the hospital said was for 15 days my family spent in the facility.

“What UBTH was asking me to pay is a total of N380,000 on March 27. I had no money but was able to raise N200,000 that time. I was not allowed to go with my wife and baby girl.

“I was running around to get the balance of N180,000, which took me over two weeks. Sadly, when I returned to the hospital, I had no money. I was told my bill has now increased from N180,000 to N330,000.

“I was worried because I couldn’t get the N180,000 after paying N200,000, now I am told to pay N10,000 per day since after she was discharged, which amounts to N150,000 for the two weeks. I went to seek help to discharge my wife, and baby.”

The distraught father, who said he has no job, called on the Edo State government, Governor Monday Okpebholo, kindhearted Nigerians, religious leaders, and corporate organizations to come to his aid.

He noted that the burden was too much for him to bear as an unemployed person.

Abdullai, who said the child was his first born, also lamented that he had not been able to do the naming ceremony of the child after seven days of birth, in line with the tradition of the Islamic religion.

“Please, I am begging Nigerians to come to my rescue. I have not been able to discharge my wife and child.

“This is my first child. She was born through Caesarean Section. I don’t have a job. I was hustling at a sawmill but the money I get can’t pay the hospital bills, let alone the additional N10,000 per day as hospital bills for the 15 days which is now N150,000.

“I have not been able to do the naming after seven days. I am so sad that since giving birth, my wife and baby have not been pressed with hot water, which is needed for safety.

“I appeal to the management of UBTH, kind-hearted Nigerians, and the State Governor, Okpebholo, to help him discharge his wife and daughter being held at the UBTH,” he said.

When contacted, the UBTH Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Uwaila Joshua, said the hospital bill should be paid.

Joshua added that the N150,000 was accrued due to food and bed space for mother and child care following the extra days spent in the hospital.

This was announced by Dr. Ibrahim Alhaji Muhammad, Chairman of the Bauchi State Civil Service Commission (CSC), during an interview with journalists on Wednesday.

Muhammad thanked Governor Bala Mohammed for the appointment and pledged to meet the expectations set for him.

He promised that the Civil Service would protect the rights of workers, including career progression, equal opportunities, and other benefits.

He also confirmed that the governor had approved the hiring of 10,000 qualified candidates from the 20 local government areas in the state.

The state employment application portal will soon be launched, allowing eligible candidates to apply.

Muhammed called on all MDAs to cooperate and ensure fairness, equality, and transparency during the recruitment process.

According to Kuanum: “The governor and SGF are not fighting, they don’t have an issue. But we are talking about the lives of our people here.

However, Kuanum said the Tor Tiv only called the duo and advised them on the need to work together.
