At least 100 people were injured when a massive fire caused by a gas pipeline leak forced people from their homes during Eid celebrations.

Fire officials in Selangor state near Kuala Lumpur said in a statement that the inferno, which was visible kilometres away, was caused by a gas pipeline leak stretching approximately 500 metres (1,600 feet).

According to the statement, the valve to the affected pipeline belonging to Malaysia’s state-run oil firm Petronas has been shut off.

The fire department said while the early morning blaze was coming under control in the afternoon, more than 100 people were injured.

Selangor Deputy Police Chief, Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan was quoted as saying by local broadcaster Astro Awani that about 60 of the injured were hospitalised.

The fire department said no deaths were reported but about 50 houses were affected by the blaze.

Residents were reportedly enjoying a public holiday for Eid celebrations in Muslim-majority Malaysia when they were forced to flee the suburban area.

Nizam Mohamad Asnizam, 49, who lives 100 metres from the site of the fire, fled from his house with his family in his car.

“When I woke up, I saw the fire raging, with an extraordinary sound. I have never experienced a fire with this kind of sound. The sound was terrifying. It felt like a jet engine was next to me,” he said.

Selangor Chief Minister, Amirudin Shari said in a Facebook post that a temporary relief centre had been set up at a nearby mosque.

He warned the public to stay away from the area affected by the fire while investigations and rescue work were being carried out.

An Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs has killed four people and injured seven, Lebanon’s health ministry reported, marking another escalation despite an ongoing ceasefire with Hezbollah.

The strike, which occurred overnight in the Dahieh district, an area known for Hezbollah’s strong presence was Israel’s second attack on Beirut in recent days.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, stating that it targeted Hassan Ali Mahmoud Bdeir, a Hezbollah operative allegedly involved in planning a terror attack against Israeli civilians.

“Due to the immediate threat posed, we acted to eliminate him and removed the threat,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Security Agency (ISA) said in a joint statement.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun called the attack a “dangerous warning,” while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced it as a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire.

Images from the scene show severe damage to the top three floors of an apartment building, with debris scattered across the streets.

The attack follows Israel’s first strike on Beirut since the ceasefire began in November 2024, which officially ended over 13 months of conflict with Hezbollah.

Israel claimed that the strike targeted a Hezbollah drone storage facility after two rockets were launched from southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah denied involvement in the rocket attack and has publicly committed to the ceasefire. However, Israeli forces continue near-daily airstrikes on suspected Hezbollah-linked targets, arguing that they are preventing the group from rearming.

Lebanon’s government maintains that Israel’s actions, including ongoing military presence in five locations in southern Lebanon constitute violations of the truce.

Hezbollah launched its latest military campaign following Hamas’ attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The war escalated into intense Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, leading to over 4,000 Lebanese deaths, including civilians, and the displacement of 1.2 million people.

Israel has justified its operations as necessary for securing its northern border and allowing 60,000 displaced Israeli civilians to return to their homes.

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has suggested that Nigeria is not improving anytime soon.

Effiong claimed that the rot, corruption, and partisanship in the police are despicable.

He made the assertion in a post on his X handle on Tuesday.

The statement comes after the police called for the cancellation of the Okene rally in honor of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan based on an intelligence report.

The Kogi State Police Command also called on the organizers of the planned rally to cancel the event in the interest of peace in the state.

The Kogi State Government had banned rallies and public gatherings in the state over alleged “security reports.”

The government also stopped fishing and other activities, lamenting that fishing activities had resulted in the loss of two lives in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette, all in Kogi Local Government Area in Kogi West.

Earlier, Akpoti-Uduaghan said that she would not back down on her plan to return to her constituency for the Sallah break.

She also urged her supporters to discard speculations circulating that she had canceled her scheduled visit.

However, the human rights lawyer said that the organizers should ignore the “useless” statement and proceed with their rally.

He said: “Nigeria is not improving anytime soon.

“The rot, corruption, and partisanship in the police are despicable.

“The organizers should ignore this useless statement and proceed with their rally.

“The courts and the law have made it clear that the only role of the police in political rallies is to provide adequate security, and that the police cannot disrupt rallies because of alleged apprehension of hijack or violence by ‘hoodlums.’

“I urge Senator Natasha and her supporters to defy the police and the governor.”
