The Russian foreign ministry said late on Tuesday that foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov discussed with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, the situation on the Korean Peninsula as well as Iran’s nuclear program.

DAILY POST reports that Wang is on a three-day visit to Moscow where he also met with President Vladimir Putin, the latest in a series of top-level meetings between the two powers in recent years aimed at deepening strategic cooperation amid shifts in the geopolitical landscape.

Last month, China and Russia said that nuclear talks with Tehran, demanded by the United States, should only resume based on mutual respect and all sanctions ought to be lifted.

“The ministers touched on individual regional issues related to the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Iran’s nuclear program, the state of affairs in Central Asia.

“The talks were held in a friendly and open atmosphere, characteristic of Russian-Chinese relations. The overlapping – or closeness – of positions on the main issues of bilateral cooperation and the global agenda was emphasized,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

According to the foreign ministry, the two diplomats also discussed the conflict in Ukraine and the need for a lasting peace agreement.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

A US federal judge on Tuesday said the administration of President Donald Trump cannot quickly fire thousands of probationary federal workers in 19 states and Washington, DC, narrowing an earlier nationwide ruling.

According to District Judge James Bredar in Baltimore, Maryland, if federal agencies want to fire large numbers of probationary workers, they must follow the required procedures for conducting mass layoffs of government employees.

Bredar said that the administration failed to do so when it terminated about 24,500 people in February without notifying states and local governments in advance.

However, he said he only had the power to require the reinstatement of employees who either live or work in the mostly Democratic-led states that, along with Washington, DC, sued over the mass firings.

At the time of filing this report, representatives for the White House have not made any comment on the development.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, said the Trump administration’s claim that the workers were fired for poor performance was false.

“This was a coordinated effort to eliminate the federal workforce – even if it meant breaking the law,” Brown said in a statement.

DAILY POST reports that probationary employees typically have less than a year of service in their current roles, though some are longtime federal employees.

On March 13, Bredar had already ruled that the firings were likely illegal and ordered 18 agencies to reinstate workers who had been fired pending further litigation.

The decision on Tuesday will be in place pending the outcome of the lawsuit, which could take months or longer to resolve.

A large number of federal employees live in Washington and neighboring Maryland, while some of the most populous U.S. states, including California, New York, and Illinois, are plaintiffs in the case.

The Trump administration has appealed Bredar’s earlier decision, claiming the firings were lawful and the judge lacked the power to require workers to be reinstated.

A US appeals court panel earlier in March declined to pause his ruling, but a Trump-appointed judge criticized the nationwide scope of the order.

The United Kingdom is preparing “for the worst” over the prospect of United States tariffs.

This was disclosed by David Lammy, UK Foreign Secretary, on Tuesday.

Lammy, however, urged the UK government to continue intense conversations with the United States administration on getting an economic agreement.

“We’re an open-trading nation. We have been that under successive governments,” Lammy tells MPs in Parliament.

“It is hugely important at this time that we continue the intense conversations we are having with the US administration on getting an economic agreement but of course we prepare for the worst.”

This comes after United States president Donald Trump had week said he was open to carving out deals with countries seeking to avoid US tariffs, but those agreements would have to be negotiated after his administration announces reciprocal levies on April 2.

Trump said countries including Britain had approached the US to try to cut deals and prevent the reciprocal tariffs.

Last weekend, British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer and Trump discussed negotiations towards a UK-US economic prosperity deal.

Both two leaders said negotiations would continue this week and agreed to stay in touch in the coming days.

President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari.

Tinubu also dissolved its board, removing the Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on information and strategy, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

Onanuga said Tinubu invoked his powers under section 59(2) of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 to carry out the sweeping reconstitution, citing the need for “enhanced operational efficiency, restored investor confidence, and a more commercially viable NNPC”.

He announced that Tinubu has now approved a new 11-man board, which has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

According to the statement, “Adedapo Segun, who replaced Umaru Isa Ajiya as the chief financial officer last November, has been appointed to the new board by President Tinubu.

“Six board members, non-executive directors, represent the country’s geopolitical zones. They are Bello Rabiu, North West, Yusuf Usman, North East, and Babs Omotowa, a former managing director of the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas( NLNG), who represents North Central.

“President Tinubu appointed Austin Avuru as a non-executive director from the South-South, David Ige as a Non-executive director from the South West, and Henry Obih as a non-executive director from the South East.

“Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will represent the ministry on the new board, while Aminu Said Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources”.

He added said that all the appointments are effective today, April 2.
